Princeton, VMI Meet on Second Day of BCA Classic

A battle of contrasting styles will take center stage this afternoon at Ohio State's Value City Arena when the Princeton men's basketball team takes on VMI on the second day of the 2006 BCA Classic.
Game time is approximately 2:15 p.m., or 25 minutes after the opening game between South Dakota State and Alabama A&M. The game can be heard LIVE on the web at GoPrincetonTigers.com and on WBUD-AM 1260 joined in progress after the conclusion of the Princeton-Yale football game.
VMI, which scored 152 and 120 points in two exhibition wins this season, had 86 field-goal attempts against host Ohio State in a 107-69 loss to the Buckeyes on Friday, including 50 in the first half. Princeton, on the other had, had 44 field-goal attempts, and the Tigers and Loyola combined for just 85 shots.
Sophomore Michael Strittmatter led Princeton with a career-best 17 points in Princeton's 68-57 loss to Loyola in the opening round Friday. He shot 6 for 7 from the field and 3 for 3 from three-point range. Strittmatter's previous career best was seven points against Columbia last year.
The Tigers will play either Alabama A&M or South Dakota State in Sunday's final round of the BCA Classic. Should the Tigers defeat VMI Saturday, Princeton will play at 2:15 Sunday; should Princeton fall to the Keydets, the Tigers would play at noon Sunday.

The Tortoise & The Hare Princeton had 44 field-goal attempts against Loyola Friday; the teams combined for 85 shot attempts. VMI had 86 field-goal attempts by itself against Ohio State, including 50 in the first half.

More Tortoise & Hare VMI scored more than 100 points in each of its exhibition games this season. Princeton last scored 100 points in 1967 in a win over Dartmouth.
Three's Company The Tigers have now made at least nine three-pointers seven times in their last 13 games dating back to last season.
Taking Care Of It Princeton had only six turnovers compared to 13 assists against Loyola. The Ramblers had no steals: three of Princeton's turnovers were offensive fouls, two were traveling violations and the other went out of bounds.
Stritt Talk Sophomore Michael Strittmatter scored a career-best 17 points against Loyola, shooting 6 for 7 from the field. Strittmatter's previous career high was seven points.
Deep Depth Three of the four players who came off Princeton's bench Friday had started at least four games in their careers prior to this year. Junior Noah Savage had started every game his first two seasons before coming off the bench Friday.
Numbers Game Loyola's 68 points on Friday were the most allowed by Princeton in a non-overtime game since a 68-42 loss to UTEP in December 2004. The Tigers allowed just 55.6 points per game last season, second in the nation in Division I.
More Numbers Game Princeton has won 34 of its last 36 games in which it has scored 60 or more points in regulation time (5-1 in 2005-06, 10-1 in 2004-05 and 19-0 in 2003-04).
On The Road Again Princeton is playing its first seven games this season either on the road or at neutral sites. The Tigers' first home game comes Dec. 6 against Lehigh.
Good Starts Freshman guard Marcus Schroeder played all 40 minutes in his first collegiate game Friday night. Schroeder had three assists and no turnovers against Loyola.
History Lesson Princeton and VMI have played once before, in the 1964 NCAA tournament. The Ivy champion Tigers defeated the Southern Conference champion Keydets, 86-60, in a game played at The Palestra in Philadelphia.
