Men's Basketball Chosen to Finish Second in Ivy Preseason Media Poll
November 07, 2006 | Men's Basketball
The Princeton men's basketball team, which finished in second place in the Ivy League in 2005-06, has been chosen to finish second once again in 2006-07 in a preseason media poll released Tuesday.
The Tigers finished with 105 points overall in the poll and one of the 16 first-place votes. Two-time defending league champion Penn was chosen to win the league, getting 127 points and the other 15 first-place votes.
16 media members, two from each Ivy school's area, vote on the annual preseason poll.
"I think Penn has to be the favorite," Princeton coach Joe Scott said Monday at the team's annual media day. "But my early take is that we have to concentrate on ourselves and get better at what we do. If that happens, I think we'll be in good shape by the time the league season comes around."
Cornell took the third-place position in the preseason poll with 85 points, with Yale finishing fourth with 77 points and Columbia fifth with 65. Brown (50), Harvard (36) and Dartmouth (31) rounded out the poll standings.
The Tigers, who finished 10-4 in league play a year ago and concluded the season with an overtime victory against Penn, return two honorable mention All-Ivy selections in seniors Justin Conway and Luke Owings. Conway averaged 8.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 13 starts in the second half of the season, while Owings averaged nearly 12 points and five rebounds in conference play in 2005-06.
Princeton opens its 2006-07 season Friday night, playing Loyola (Ill.) in the first round of the 2006 SportsTimeOhio BCA Classic at the Value City Arena, in Columbus, Ohio. The Ivy basketball season kicks off Wednesday night, when Brown takes on Michigan State in the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic in East Lansing, Mich.
