Field Hockey Defeats Dartmouth 2-1 in Overtime
September 16, 2006 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- Junior Micaela Vie Brock tapped a crossing pass into the Dartmouth goal 4:31 into the first overtime period to lift the Princeton fled hockey team to a 2-1 win against Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium. Freshman Tina Bortz had a goal and an assist in the game.
Princeton controlled play from the onset but a strong defensive effort by Dartmouth held the Tigers at bay despite seven penalty corners and six shots in the first 20 minutes of the game.
While the Dartmouth defensive held off the Tiger attack, the Big Green offense built off its defensive play and took advantage of its first good scoring chance of the game with a goal at the 18:50 mark. Katy Hagy started the play with a shot from the top of the circle that senior Allison Nemeth saves. The rebound bounced out to Allison Weinstock whose shot attempted served as a pass that was corralled by Lizzie Bildner who quickly shot in into the goal for her third tally of the season.
Up by a goal, Dartmouth settled in defensively and repelled the Tigers for the remainder of the half. Princeton had four corners and seven shots on goal after the Dartmouth goal, but Dartmouth blocked five shots and Dartmouth goalkeeper Ashley Heist made a key save to keep Dartmouth up by a goal at the half despite being outshot 14-3 and outcornered 10-1 in the period.
Princeton continued to pressure in the second half, but the Dartmouth defense continued to hold off the Princeton attack. It took the Tigers to their fifth shot and sixth corner of the second half before Princeton was able to turn an opportunity into a goal. After playing the ball in on a corner, the Tigers established possession to the right of the Dartmouth goalkeeper. Eventually the ball bounced behind Heist towards the left side of the cage where freshman Tina Bortz was waiting. Bortz pushed the ball into the cage to knot the game up at 1-1 with less than five minutes remaining in the game. The goal was her team-leading third goal of the season.
Princeton had one last chance to score again and win the game as time expired when Princeton earned a corner in the closing seconds. Junior Paige Schmidt took the ball and fed it towards the goalpost hoping for a deflection, but the ball was just out of the reach of the waiting players.
That sent the game to overtime and Princeton had the first good chance when sophomore Sarah Reinprecht sent a shot wide. Princeton kept possession in the Dartmouth end of the field and earned a corner. Vie Brock played the ball in and it was passed around to Bortz, who fed it back to Vie Brock as she waited at the goalpost. The goal was the first of Vie Brock's collegiate career.
Heist made four saves in the loss for Dartmouth, while Nemeth made one save for the Tigers.
Princeton is now 3-2 on the season and has won its last three games. The Tigers are now 2-0 in Ivy League play and return to action on Saturday when they host No. 3 Old Dominion at 1 p.m.
