Princeton Announces 2006-07 Men's Basketball Schedule
September 06, 2006 | Men's Basketball
Invitations to the season-opening BCA Classic at Ohio State and Marquette's Blue & Gold Classic, as well as meetings with in-state foes Rutgers and Seton Hall and a matchup against two-time defending NIT champion South Carolina, highlight the Princeton men's basketball schedule released today.
The Tigers will also play 11 home games in 2006-07, including matchups with Marshall (Dec. 16) and Rice (Jan. 6) from Conference USA. Princeton will also host Rutgers (Dec. 9) and Lehigh (Dec. 6) at Jadwin Gym prior to its Ivy League home schedule, which begins Feb. 9 against Harvard.
“We think this is a challenging schedule with a good mix of home, neutral and away games,” said Princeton head coach Joe Scott, now in his third season. “We'll also get some excellent return games in 2007-08 when Seton Hall and South Carolina, as well as Manhattan and Iona, will come to Jadwin Gym.”
As many as 10 potential 2006-07 Princeton opponents reached postseason play a year ago. Seven of those (Ohio State, Seton Hall, Marquette, Kent State, Northwestern State, Iona, Penn) were NCAA tournament teams in 2005-06, while three others (South Carolina, Manhattan, Rutgers) played in the 2006 NIT.
Princeton could play as many as three Big East opponents should the Tigers face host Marquette at the Blue & Gold Classic. The Tigers also face the SEC's South Carolina, a pair of Conference USA teams and potentially a Big 10 opponent should they meet Ohio State at the BCA Classic.
“There are good fields at both tournaments, so we'll be tested early in the season,” said Scott. “As usual, we have a difficult non-league schedule which we hope will prepare us for the league season.”
Princeton will play three games at the season-opening BCA Classic, at Ohio State's Value City Arena Nov. 10-12. Matchups for the eight-team tournament will be determined at a later date. The Tigers will face North Dakota State in the opening round of Marquette's Blue & Gold Classic Dec. 1, with the winner facing the winner of the Marquette-Northwestern State game in the championship game the next night.
The Tigers will meet Seton Hall on Jan. 29 at the Continental Airlines Arena after a 16-day break due to first-semester exams. Princeton and Seton Hall will meet for the first time since Dec. 22, 1988, three months before the Pirates lost to Michigan in the 1989 NCAA championship game.
Princeton will visit South Carolina on Wed., Dec. 20, in the first meeting between the Tigers and Gamecocks since the 1992-93 season.
Princeton will play its first four Ivy League games on the road, beginning with the league opener Jan. 12 at Columbia. The Tigers will then play five of their last seven Ivy games at home, including the season finale March 6 against Penn. The Tigers travel to The Palestra to face the Quakers on Tues., Feb. 13.
The Tigers will play their first seven games away from Jadwin Gym, including games at Manhattan and Lafayette in November, before opening their home season with Lehigh Dec. 6. After three straight home games and the visit to South Carolina, Princeton concludes the 2006 portion of its schedule with a visit to 2005-06 MAAC champion Iona Dec. 30.
Game times for Princeton's 2006-07 schedule should be considered tentative and are subject to change. Television information for selected games will be released at a later date.
