Seton Hall Defeats Princeton in Men's Basketball, 79-41
January 29, 2007 | Men's Basketball
Brian Laing led three Seton Hall players in double figures with 17 points and the Pirates used huge scoring runs in each half to run away from Princeton, 79-41, in a men's basketball game played at the Continental Airlines Arena Monday night.
The Pirates (12-9) hit five of their nine three-point shots in a 21-6 first-half run on the way to a 41-21 halftime lead, then outscored the Tigers (9-7) 15-2 in the first six minutes of the second half. Seton Hall led by as many as 43 points in the final minutes on the way to handing Princeton its largest defeat since a 77-34 loss to Cornell in 1946.
Eugene Harvey added 13 points and Stan Gaines 10 for the Pirates, who shot 54% from the field (29-54) and outrebounded the Tigers 33-18, including 19-8 in the second half. Both Gaines and Harvey shot 5 for 6 from the field for Seton Hall, which ended a three-game losing streak.
Princeton, led by Noah Savage's 10 points off the bench, lost its third straight game. The Tigers shot 36% from the field and made just three of their 18 three-point attempts.
Princeton trailed just 7-6 after a Luke Owings layup four minutes into the game, but The Hall then scored the next seven points to take a 14-6 lead four minutes later. After Zach Finley scored for Princeton several seconds later, the Hall began its game-changing 21-6 run.
Laing, Jamar Nutter, Larry Davis and Carl Marshall each hit three-point shots in that run, which ended with Marshall's trey with 5:24 left that made the score 35-14 Seton Hall.
The Pirates would score 12 straight points in a three-minute span right after halftime. Leading 46-23, Seton Hall got baskets from Laing, Davis, Harvey and finally Gaines to take a 58-23 lead with 14 minutes left.
Princeton was playing without junior forward Kyle Koncz, the team's leading scorer, who was not dressed to a foot injury. The Tigers had 17 turnovers against Seton Hall's pressure defense.
The New Jersey rivals were playing for the first time since the 1988-89 season, when the Pirates reached the national championship game.
Princeton plays its final 12 games of the season against Ivy League competition, beginning Friday night at Yale.
