Women's Hockey Routs Quinnipiac 6-1
January 09, 2007 | Women's Ice Hockey
Two goals by Kim Pearce and a penalty-shot save by winning goaltender Kristen Young helped led the Princeton women's hockey team to a 6-1 win over Quinnipiac Tuesday night at Baker Rink. The Tigers jumped out early with four goals in the first period, including a shorthanded tally by Lizzie Keady, and held on through a penalty-filled shootout.
The win improves Princeton to 11-8-2 overall, 9-4-1 in the ECAC, while Quinnipiac falls to 6-16-0, 3-11-0. The win was critical for Princeton, which is battling for one of four home weekends during the ECAC quarterfinals, which will begin in February.
The Tigers played with a purpose early and took a 1-0 lead when Melanie Wallace scored her fourth goal of the season by taking a feed from Pearce and putting the puck past Janelle Wolitski. The power-play goal was followed less than two minutes later by Laura Watt's fifth goal of the season, which came on a perfect feed from Pearce.
Watt returned the favor later in the period by breaking up a Quinnipiac pass, which Pearce corralled and went in alone on Wolitski. She found the back of the net, and she would replay the breakaway with similar success in the third period to finish the explosive Princeton night. The final goal of the first period came from Keady, who worked with Marykate Oakley to turn a Quinnipiac power play into their own 2-on-1 show. Keady's sixth goal of the season ensured the Tigers a big lead at the end of one period, although a goal from Elyse Cole got Quinnipiac on the board.
It could have been 4-2 at the end of one, but Young stoned Antoinette Maldonado early in the period on a penalty shot. Maldonado faked and tried to go to Young's left, but the sophomore goalie had none of it and made a pad save.
Kate Hession scored a power-play goal in the second period for the only score of the frame, although the scoreboard seemed consistently lit. Both teams were called for eight penalties throughout the contest, including six penalties in the second period alone. Pearce's 10th goal of the season in the third period ended the scoring at 6-1 and sent Princeton to its 11th win.
