Field Hockey Sews Up Ivy Title With 3-1 Win at Penn
November 02, 2007 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA -- Senior Paige Schmidt scored two goals as the 18th-ranked Princeton field hockey team defeated Penn 3-1 in their Ivy League season finale to seal up the Ivy League title and earn the league's berth in a play-in game for the NCAA tournament. Princeton completes the regular season 13-4 overall and 6-1 in the league.
Both of Schmidt's goals came in the opening half of play as the Tigers jumped to a 2-0 lead. Both goals were the result of corners. The first came unassisted at 14:15 and the second came off a feed from sophomore Christina Bortz nearly 15 minutes later.
Penn cut the lead in half with a goal in the second half, but junior Holly McGarvie added an insurance goal late as she shoved in a rebound and the Tigers picked up the 3-1 win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Cynthia Wray made a save to earn the win, while Penn's Alanna Butera suffered the loss.
The win was Princeton's ninth in a row moved Princeton to 13-4 this season. The Tigers win also avoided a potential four-way tie atop the league standings as Princeton's 6-1 Ivy League record will be at least one game better than any other league team.
Princeton now awaits the Atlantic-10 champion, which will be either St. Joseph's or Massachusetts. The team play Sunday in the A-10 title game and the winner will visit Princeton on Tuesday at 1 p.m., with the winner of that game set to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
