Manhattan Rallies Past Princeton, 71-66
December 16, 2007 | Men's Basketball
Halftime came way later than usual for Manhattan Sunday afternoon. In the end, the Jaspers hardly minded.
Manhattan scored 36 points in the first 31:35 of the game and then nearly doubled that total in the final 8:25, scoring 35 more from that point to erase a 13-point deficit en route to a 71-66 win over Princeton at Jadwin Gym.
Princeton fell to 2-8 with the loss and now has six days off before a game at Marshall Saturday afternoon. Manhattan improved to 6-4 with the win.
"They pressured us pretty well," said Princeton coach Sydney Johnson. "We didn't collectively respond well enough."
Princeton turned the ball over 21 times against Manhattan's defense. Both teams actually were played by turnovers (Manhattan had 14), and both shot extremely well, as the Jaspers were at 57.4% for the game and Princeton was at 53.7%
The Tigers led 33-30 at halftime and built the lead to 49-36 on Zach Finley's basket with 11:54 to go. At that point, Finley had 17 points on 8 for 13 shooting, but the 6-9 sophomore center would not attempt another field goal the rest of the way as the Jaspers began to furiously contest every touch.
On the other end, Manhattan became unstoppable. The result was a 35-17 turnaround that stunned the Jadwin crowd and dealt Princeton its eighth straight defeat.
Manhattan finally tied the game with 5:09 to go on a made three-pointer by Nick Walsh, who had airballed his first attempt. The 5-9 freshman then put his team ahead for good with a conventional three-point play, and the Jaspers would hardly have any empty possessions the rest of the way. The lead grew to as many as eight twice.
Finley's 17 led the Tigers, while Kyle Koncz had 14. Mike Strittmatter had nine points off the bench in just 12 minutes.
Manhattan was led by 22 from Antoine Pearson and 16 from Rashad Green. The Jaspers shot 15 for 18 from the free-throw line.
Princeton honored the 1997-98 Top 10 team at halftime.
