April 17, 2007 | Men's Basketball
Junior forward Kyle Koncz earned the B.F. Bunn Trophy as team MVP and seniors Edwin Buffmire and Justin Conway were also honored with team awards at the annual Princeton men's basketball banquet held Tuesday night at Jadwin Gym.
THE B.F. BUNN TROPHY
Awarded to that member of the varsity basketball team who, through sportsmanship, play and influence, has contributed most to the sport at Princeton.
Kyle Koncz '08
Kyle Koncz was Princeton's leading scorer in 2006-07 despite suffering a painful stress reaction in his left foot that did not allow him to practice in the final two months of the season and limited his minutes during games. He made a team-high 51 three-pointers this past season, including at least three in each of Princeton's first six games, and moved into 14th place all-time at Princeton with 101 career three-pointers with one season remaining.
The 6-7 Koncz, from Strongsville, Ohio, outside Cleveland, was averaging nearly 12 points per game and shooting 50% from three-point range prior to suffering the foot injury at Iona Dec. 30. He had 20 points in Princeton's win over Marshall and 19 four days later at South Carolina, and he scored in double figures nine times in the first 12 games of the seasson.
Koncz, a psychology major, shot 39% for the season from three-point range (51 for 132) and finished sixth in the Ivy League in three-pointers made per game.
THE PAUL RICHARD FRIEDMAN MEMORIAL AWARD
Given to that member of the program who does his very best every day in every way.
Justin Conway '07
Justin Conway, Princeton's team captain in 2006-07, becomes just the second person to earn the Friedman Award twice, joining Princeton assistant coach and former Tiger point guard Mike Brennan '94.
The 6-4 Conway started 22 games as a senior and averaged 5.9 points and a team-high 3.9 rebounds per game in addition to more than two assists per game. He also finished second on the team in steals with 37.
Off the court, Conway, a sociology major, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District II team and was one of five Princeton student-athletes to earn winter Academic All-Ivy League honors.
The Santa Fe, N.M., native previously won the Friedman Award in 2005, the season before he helped transform the Tigers during his junior year of 2005-06. He started the final 13 games of that season at center, averaging 8.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game, and earned honorable mention All-Ivy League honors after helping the Tigers to a 10-4 Ivy League record and a second-place league finish.
THE CLASS OF 1959 BOB ROCK SIXTH MAN AWARD
Given to the team member whose energy, enthusiasm and effort made an invaluable contribution to the season.
Edwin Buffmire '07
Edwin Buffmire was Princeton's first perimeter player off the bench in 2006-07, averaging nearly 18 minutes per game, before an ankle sprain forced him to miss several late-season games. Buffmire, a 6-4 guard, played in 21 games overall and averaged 3.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in 2006-07.
He had a season-high 12 points, tying a career high, in just 16 minutes against Rutgers at Jadwin Gym Dec. 9. He also had six rebounds against both VMI and Lehigh and four assists in the win over VMI.
Buffmire, a Near Eastern Studies major, played in 56 career games at Princeton, starting five as a junior in 2005-06. His late basket and blocked shot against Dartmouth at Jadwin Gym in 2006 sealed a Princeton comeback victory, and his two free throws with less than a second left against Columbia at Jadwin Gym in 2006 forced overtime in an eventual Princeton victory.
