The tournament was first played with four teams on Thanksgiving weekend 1984 in Kona, Hawaii. The tournament transitioned to the current eight-team format in 1986 and relocated to the Maui War Memorial Gym in Wailuku, Hawaii. In 1987, the EA Sports Maui Invitational moved to the Lahaina Civic Center, its current home on the island of Maui.
The 2007-08 Tigers will head into the EA Sports Maui Invitational under the guidance of first-year head coach Sydney Johnson. Johnson, a three-time captain at Princeton and 1997 Ivy League Player of the Year, will lead a returning cast of players that includes senior sharpshooters Kyle Koncz and Noah Savage as well as well as sophomore guards Marcus Schroeder and Lincoln Gunn and sophomore center Zach Finley, all of whom were starters in 2006-07.
