August 13, 2007 | Men's Basketball
A first-ever trip to the prestigious EA Sports Maui Invitational and games against teams from the Big East and Big 10 Conferences highlight the 2007-08 Princeton men's basketball schedule announced by first-year head coach Sydney Johnson today.
"We will certainly have our work cut out for us this season,” says Johnson. “Apart from playing in the Big East?which is the best conference in America?I can't imagine a tougher schedule for our team. That being said, true players want to play against the best competition and playing these caliber of programs is what Princeton basketball is all about."
In addition to the Tigers, the Maui Invitational field features Arizona State, Illinois, Marquette, LSU, Oklahoma State, host Chaminade and Duke, Princeton's first-round opponent Nov. 19. The Tigers will play three games in Maui, all of which will be televised by ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.
Princeton will play 13 home games in 2007-08, highlighted by a visit from Seton Hall to Jadwin Gym Nov. 28. The Pirates will be making their first visit to Princeton since the 1987-88 season.
Three days after the matchup with the Pirates, Princeton heads to Piscataway for its annual game with Rutgers, the first game in a challenging three-game road swing. The Tigers visit Evansville from the Missouri Valley Conference Dec. 5 and then travel to Penn State Dec. 12 for their first meeting with the Nittany Lions since the 2000 NIT.
Before heading to Maui, Princeton opens the season with a pair of home games, a Nov. 11 visit from 2007 Northeast Conference champion Central Connecticut followed by a Nov. 14 game against Iona. The Tigers will also face another MAAC opponent, Manhattan, at Jadwin Gym Dec. 16 in the second half of a women's/men's doubleheader.
The Tigers also host Lafayette Jan. 9, marking the 18th consecutive season the teams will meet, and play Division II Dominican College Jan. 27 at Jadwin Gym after a 17-day break from games due to first-semester exams.
Princeton opens Ivy League play at home against Dartmouth Feb. 1 and, for the second straight season, closes the league season with three consecutive home games. After Columbia and Cornell visit Jadwin Gym March 7 and 8, the Tigers will host Penn to close the regular season for the fourth straight year March 11.
The Tigers visit Penn Feb. 12 to end a three-game road swing. Princeton will also play four straight road games, against Harvard, Dartmouth, Brown and Yale, before the season-ending home stretch.
