Tigers Blank Columbia for Third Straight Win
September 22, 2007 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- The Princeton field hockey team scored three second half goals to defeat Columbia 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium. Junior Kraftin Schreyer scored her first collegiate goal on a penalty stroke to snap the scoreless tie and help lift Princeton to the win.
Neither team was able to score in the opening half of play, although the teams combined for 14 shots in the period. Princeton outshot Columbia 9-5 in the half and most of the half was played in the Columbia end of the field, although the Lions came close to scoring early in the game when Jacqui Munro rang a shot off the post off a corner in the opening five minutes of the game. Princeton came equally close to getting on the scoreboard around the 20-minute mark when sophomore Kaitlin Donovan took a shot that hit the post.
Princeton's pressure finally got to Columbia's defense in the second half and the Tigers scored three time. Princeton had 14 shots in the half and got on the scoreboard by pressuring Columbia in their circle. On the second of back-to-back corners, senior Paige Schmidt took a shot from the top that was saved by Columbia goalkeeper Gena Miller. The rebound came to the side of the goal to sophomore Tina Bortz, whose shot was kicked away by a Columbia player, and a penalty stroke was awarded.
Schreyer took the stroke and scored her first collegiate goal with a high shot to the left side of the goal.
Up 1-0, the Tigers added two insurance goals in the final 10 minutes of action, and both goals came directly off corners. On the first goal, Bortz played the ball to junior Candice Arner, who stopped it for Schmidt. Schmidt took a low hard shot that was stopped by Columbia's goalkeeper, but the ball bounced to the side and deflected into the goal off a Columbia stick for her first goal of the season.
Four minutes later it was junior Sarah Reinprecht scoring her second goal of the season. Bortz fed the ball over to Reinprecht who moved to find a lane to shoot. Her shot beat Miller and a Columbia defender was able to get a piece of it, but it ricocheted off her stick and into the goal.
Princeton sophomore goalkeeper Cynthia Wray earned her third win and second shutout of the year, as she made two saves. Miller stopped seven Princeton shots in the loss.
The win was Princeton's third straight and lifts the Tigers to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the Ivy League. Princeton returns to action tomorrow against Colgate at 1 p.m.
