Field Hockey Falls to Second-Ranked Maryland, 4-1
September 26, 2007 | Field Hockey
Princeton gave the second-ranked team in the nation all it could handle, outshooting Maryland for most of the game, before the Terps scored two late goals to pull away for a 4-1 field hockey victory over the Tigers Wednesday night.
The Tigers (4-3) pulled within 2-1 late in the first half when sophomore Kaitlin Donovan scored her first goal of the season. Leah Hoagland's initial shot was blocked, but Donovan was there to score on the rebound with just less than six minutes left in the half.
Donovan then had another scoring chance that would have tied the game at 2-2 midway through the second half, but her shot was knocked off the line by a Maryland defender.
The undefeated Terps (10-0) would take advantage of that break three minutes later when Danielle Keeley scored her first goal of the season to make it 3-1, taking a pass from the end line from Sarah Scholl.
Princeton, which had a four-game winning streak come to a close, had 13 shots to 14 for Maryland had six of the game's eight penalty corners. Goalie Cynthia Wray made six saves for Princeton to help keep her team within striking distance for most of the game.
Maryland made it 4-1 with just less than four minutes left in the game when Katie O'Donnell weaved through traffic and scored her 12th goal of the season.
O'Donnell had assisted on Maryland's first goal, which came off a penalty corner eight minutes into the first half.
The Tigers host Cornell Saturday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium. Princeton is 3-0 in the Ivy League heading into the game, having outscored its three Ivy opponents 9-1
