Tigers Blank Yale 2-0 in Ivy Opener
September 08, 2007 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- The Princeton field hockey team earned its first win of the 2007 season on Saturday afternoon by shutting out Yale 2-0 at Class of '52 Stadium. Juniors Holly McGarvie and Sarah Reinprecht scored for the Tigers and sophomore Cynthia Wray earned the shutout in goal.
While Princeton dominated the game in shots and corners, it took the Tigers 27 minutes to break through with a goal when McGarvie scored her second of the year and second in as many games. After players from both teams battled for the ball on the right side of the cage, the loose ball came to McGarvie in front, whose shot eluded Yale's Charlotte Goins as she charged towards her.
Goins kept Yale in the game from there, making 13 saves to keep her team within a goal. The game remained at 1-0 until the Tigers added an insurance goal with less than two minutes left when Reinprecht scored her first goal of the season. Off a penalty corner, senior Paige Schmidt made a behind the back pass to Reinprecht along the top of the circle, and Reinprecht paced a shot inside the near post to make the score 2-0.
Princeton outshot Yale 25-8 and outcornered the Bulldogs 17-3. Wray saw limited action in the Tiger goal, but made two big stops when called upon, especially one late in the second half when the margin was still just a goal.
Princeton is now 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League and returns to action next Saturday at Dartmouth.
