Maine Gets Past Men's Basketball 58-55 in OT
November 19, 2008 | Men's Basketball
PRINCETON -- Same location, different opponent, same agonizingly close result for the Princeton men's basketball team.
The Tigers led with less than a minute to play in regulation of Wednesday's 58-55 loss to Maine, but the Black Bears tied it and sent it to overtime where Princeton never gained an advantage.
"It's painful to have to learn this way, but I'm hopeful we can learn sooner rather than later," Princeton head coach Sydney Johnson said.
Princeton lost by two points in its season opener last week before adding another one-possession loss to start the season 0-2. Maine improved to 3-0.
Freshman Doug Davis led Princeton for the second straight game, scoring 14 after opening his career last Friday night with 25 against Central Michigan, while sophomore Dan Mavraides had a career-high 13 points. Another sophomore, Kareem Maddox, reached career bests with 10 rebounds and five assists.
Princeton outshot Maine 44 percent to 40.4 percent for the game and held a strong rebounding advantage of 39-25 behind Maddox's game-high total, but 19 turnovers kept the Tigers from closing it out.
The Tigers appeared to be in a comfortable position up seven with 5:54 to play on a bucket by freshman Max Huc, two of his nine points, but Maine scored nine of the next 13 points to cut the lead to two with 2:25 left.
Princeton led 51-50 before a Maddox foul sent Maine's Junior Bernal to the line with 59 seconds left, when Bernal hit one of two free throws to tie it. A turnover nixed Princeton's attempt to get the last shot, and the game went to overtime.
Maine never trailed in the extra period, and the Tigers' last points came with 1:50 to play. Two free throws from Bernal and one from Andrew Rogers sealed it for the Black Bears.
Huc gave Princeton its largest lead at 31-23 with 3:02 before halftime, and Princeton led at the break for the second straight game. Maine didn't catch the Tigers until the game-tying free throws at the end of regulation.
Princeton will travel to Army for a 2:30 p.m. game Sunday.
