Tigers Fall To Penn, 60-47, In Men's Basketball Season Finale
March 11, 2008 | Men's Basketball
Jack Eggleston scored 15 points and Tyler Bernardini had 11, including a pair of three-point shots that helped Penn take a double-digit second-half lead, as the Quakers defeated Princeton, 60-47, in the men's basketball season finale at Jadwin Gym Tuesday night.
Princeton (6-23, 3-11 Ivy), which led by three points late in the first half, was within two points at 44-42 when Kevin Steuerer hit a three-point shot with eight minutes left. But Bernardini, a freshman, hit a three-pointer on Penn's next possession to make it 47-42, then made another shot from deep two minutes later to make it 52-42 and complete an 8-0 run for Penn (13-18, 8-6 Ivy).
The Tigers, who again got solid contributions from their bench, benefited from the return of sophomore center Zach Finley, who played 31 minutes and had 13 points. Junior Jason Briggs had 10 points and a career-best eight rebounds for the Tigers, who shot better from the field than the Quakers but made just two of 11 three-point shots and 11 of 21 free-throw attempts.
Head coach Sydney Johnson started all five of his seniors, playing their final game at Jadwin Gym, but the Quakers got off to a solid start in the first 10 minutes, taking a 17-10 lead on a Kevin Egee jumper.
The Tigers would recover from that early deficit, however, using an impressive 12-2 run after that to take the lead. Princeton tied the game at 19 on two Noah Savage free throws with 4:40 left and then took the lead when Kyle Koncz hit a three-pointer with 4:26 left, forcing a Penn timeout.
Koncz had four points and six rebounds and finished his career with 156 three-point shots, good for fifth all-time at Princeton. Savage had 10 points and six rebounds, and he finished sixth all-time at Princeton with 155 three-point shots.
Brian Grandieri added 10 points and eight rebounds in his final game for Penn, which won its fourth straight game over Princeton and finished in third place alone in the Ivy League standings.
Penn shot just 35 % from the field in the second half but made 13 of its 16 free throws to hold off Princeton at game's end.
In addition to co-captains Koncz and Savage, the game was the final one at Princeton for seniors Kevin Steuerer, Zach Woolridge and Matt Sargeant. Steuerer started the final 17 games this season, while Woolridge started the final three and Sargeant 10 career games, including nine his freshman season of 2004-05.
Princeton and Penn were playing the final game of the 2007-08 college basketball regular season and for the 218th time in a rivalry that began in 1903. The Quakers now lead the all-time series 121-97.
