ESPN.com Ranks Princeton Men's Basketball No. 40 in Division I During 64-Team NCAA Tournament Era
July 23, 2008 | Men's Basketball
PRINCETON -- ESPN.com is releasing its historical rankings of 330 Division I men's basketball teams over the course of the week, and the Web site announced Tuesday that Princeton came in at No. 40.
The rankings take into account the past 24 seasons since the NCAA Tournament field expanded to 64 teams for the 1984-85 campaign.
A point system was used to determine the precise rankings. Princeton received points for:
? 50 points for 10 Ivy League titles (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004)
? 27 points for nine “conference tournament titles” (years in which Princeton won the Ivy League and its NCAA Tournament berth) to be able to compare with schools in leagues that have conference tournaments
? Nine points for nine NCAA Tournament berths (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2004)
? Eight points for eight 20-win seasons (1990, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2004)
? Six points for advancing to the NCAA Tournament's second round (1996, 1998)
? Three points for a postseason NIT berth (1999, 2000, 2002)
? Two points for its 1996 NCAA Tournament win over UCLA as a No. 13 seed
