Field Hockey Too Strong For Lehigh in 11-1 Win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The 17th-ranked Princeton field hockey team overpowered Lehigh Wednesday night in an 11-1 win over the Mountain Hawks. Senior Holly McGarvie scored her first of two goals 2:46 into the game and Princeton never looked back in the 10-goal win. Freshman Kathleen Sharkey scored three goals and had an assist in the win.
The Tigers dominated all facets of the game, outshooting Lehigh by a 44-1 margin and garnering 13 corners to none for Lehigh. The Tigers scored eight times in the first half and added three goals in the second half before Lehigh added the game's final goal.
McGarvie, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Week opened the scoring and had two goals in the game, as well as an assist. She now leads the team with nine points this season and has scored in all three games played.
Sharkey led all Tigers with seven points in the game, including the first three goals of her collegiate career. Seven other Tigers added single goals in the game. Senior Candice Arner notched her third goal of the season and added an assist, while senior Kraftin Schreyer, freshman Katie Reinprecht, senior Kristin Schwab, junior Christina Bortz and junior Kaitlin Donovan all added goals.
Sophomore Jennifer King and junior Cynthia Wray split the game in goal. King played the first half and got the win, while Wray played the second half.
Princeton's 11 goals scored is tied for second all-time for goals in a game. The program record of 12 goals came in a 12-0 win against Columbia in 1997. The Tigers also scored 11 times in an 11-1 win over La Salle on Sept. 14, 1996 and in an 11-1 triumph against Lafayette on Sept. 13, 1997. The Tigers last scored in double digits at Rutgers in 2002.
Princeton is now 3-0, which equals its best start since the 2003 season when the Tigers also opened with three-straight wins. The Tigers are back in action on Sunday afternoon at fifth-ranked Connecticut.
