September 20, 2008 | Men's Water Polo
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The 18th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team split its first two games at the ECAC Championships at Harvard on Saturday. The Tigers dropped their opening-round game against 12th-ranked St. Francis 11-5, but rebounded to defeat 18th-ranked Brown 15-10 in the second game. The Tigers will take on Iona tomorrow in the fifth-place game.
In the opening game, the Tigers were neck-and-neck with St. Francis for three quarters before the Terriers pulled ahead in the final frame. The teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after a quarter and 4-4 at the half. St. Francis led by a goal at 6-5 after three quarters before scoring five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to run away for the win.
Junior Gregor Horstmeyer led the offense with three goals while senior Brendan Colgan and junior Douglas Wigley added goals. Sophomore Mike Merlone made 10 saves in the loss. Princeton was hampered in the game by its inability to score with a man advantage. The Tigers were just 1 for 10 in man-up situations.
Princeton met Brown, the team it is tied with in the national rankings in the second game of the day, and came away with a 15-10 win, topping the Bears for the second time this season. Princeton led 4-3 after a quarter and 8-5 at the half. The Tigers then scored the first six goals of the third quarter to open a 14-5 lead and cruised to the 15-10 victory.
Four Tigers scored three goals in the win as sophomore Jeff Cole, sophomore Matt Hale, junior Eric Vreeland and Wigley each scored three times. Colgan added two goals and senior Alex Edmunds had one. Junior Scott Hvidt had nine saves for the win.
Princeton is now 2-4 overall with both wins coming against Brown. The Tigers will return to the pool tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. against Iona, which fell to George Washington and defeated Harvard on Saturday.
