September 07, 2008 | Field Hockey
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The 16th-ranked Princeton field hockey team blanked William & Mary 4-0 on Sunday afternoon to win its second straight game. Senior Candice Arner scored two goals in the win while junior Christina Bortz added a goal and an assist.
William & Mary garnered the first two shots of the game, but the Tigers weathered the Tribe's early attack and jumped ahead with two goals in a 1:19 span at the 20-minute mark of the opening half.
Bortz got the Tigers on the board with her first goal of the season at 19:38 when she carried the ball into the circle and scored with a shot to the left side of the goal. Just over a minute later, senior Holly McGarvie made it 2-0 when senior Sarah Reinprecht fed her across the circle and she scored to the left of the Tribe goalkeeper. The goal was McGarvie's second of the season and the 20th of her Princeton career.
Arner made it 3-0 in Princeton's favor when she scored with less than three minutes remaining in the first half off a corner. Bortz, who recorded three points in the contest, assisted on Arner's first goal of the season. Arner completed the scoring 2:16 into the second half when she scored with a bouncing shot from the right side. Junior Kaitlyn Perrelle assisted on it.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer King improved to 2-0 this season by stopping six William & Mary shots for her first career shutout. Princeton outshot William & Mary 19-8 and outcornered the Tribe 6-4.
The win was Princeton's third straight against William & Mary and completed a perfect opening weekend for Princeton, which edged Richmond on Friday afternoon. Princeton's 2-0 record marks its best start since the 2003 season when the Tigers opened 3-0. Princeton is back in action on Wednesday night at Lehigh (1-2) at 7 p.m.
