Men's Basketball to Host Lehigh Wednesday in Last Game Before Finals Break
January 05, 2009 | Men's Basketball
Princeton (3-8, 0-0 Ivy) vs. Lehigh (10-3, 0-0 Patriot)
Wednesday, Jan. 7, 7 p.m. in Jadwin Gym
Princeton Head Coach: Sydney Johnson (Second season, 9-31 at Princeton/Overall)
Radio: WPRB 103.3 (John Sadak, Play-by-Play)
All-Time Series: Princeton leads 30-3 / 23-2 in Princeton / 7-0 in Jadwin Gym
Princeton-Lehigh series: Princeton leads the overall series 30-3, but the teams have been playing on and off since 1906. The series restarted in 2005 after an eight-year break.
The last time: Lehigh recorded its first win over Princeton since 1930 last season in a 68-49 win at Stabler Arena. Lehigh's Zahir Carrington had 27 points while no Tiger reached double figures.
Our house: In seven tries, Lehigh has never defeated Princeton in Jadwin Gym. The Mountain Hawks haven't defeated Princeton on campus since 1930.
Streak snapped: Princeton's six-game losing skid ended Saturday on ESPNU with a 65-55 win over UNC Greensboro. The Tigers led by as many as 15 points but UNCG pulled within three with 1:08 to play. Princeton hit 11 of 12 free throws down the stretch to close it out.
Princeton vs. the Patriots: The Lehigh game will be Princeton's third and final meeting with a Patriot League school this regular season. The Tigers won at Army in November and lost by a point at Lafayette last week.
The Ivy-Patriot Challenge: All eight Ivy schools and all eight Patriot schools have games against the other conference this season. Entering the week, the Patriot League has an 8-7 lead in those games. Columbia faced American Monday, while Lafayette and Penn met Tuesday, as did Bucknell and Cornell. The Princeton-Lehigh game is the last between the conferences this season.
Double-digit Dan: Sophomore Dan Mavraides has made the most of his first two starts of the season, scoring 11 points at Lafayette and 17 against UNC Greensboro to lead or co-lead Princeton each time. Mavraides, who started only one game last season, has scored in double-digits six times this season.
10 for Pawel: Junior Pawel Buczak, who had already re-set his career high in rebounds twice in December, had his first double-digit rebound game against UNC Greensboro with 10.
Ready, set, study: Wednesday's game is the last for the Tigers before the January finals break. Princeton will play again Jan. 25 in the annual lower-division game against Division II Concordia (N.Y.).
Were you there?: The Concordia game Jan. 25 will mark 40 years to the day since the first game in Jadwin Gym. It took place Jan. 25, 1969, as Princeton defeated Penn 74-62 to start a five-game winning streak in their new home after moving from Dillon Gym.
Sydney Johnson vs. Lehigh: Sydney Johnson is 3-1 against Lehigh between his time as a player at Princeton and his first season as head coach last year. In his three meetings as a player, Princeton won by an average of 28 points. Lehigh, however, responded with last season's 19-point win.
Sydney Johnson vs. the Patriot League: Johnson has a 9-4 record against Patriot League schools between his time as a Princeton player, Georgetown assistant coach and Princeton coach. He is 4-2 against Lafayette (4-0 as a player, 0-2 as Princeton coach), 3-1 against Lehigh (3-0 as a player, 0-1 as Princeton coach), 0-1 against Bucknell as a player, 1-0 against Army as Princeton coach and 1-0 against Colgate as a Georgetown assistant.
Princeton vs. the Patriot League: Since the Patriot League began play in basketball for the 1990-91 season, the Tigers hold a 26-10 record against those schools. Princeton has faced six of the eight Patriot schools in that span, the exceptions being the southernmost pair of Navy and American.
Take me to your leaders: Six Tigers have led or co-led the team in scoring in a game this season. Doug Davis, Dan Mavraides, Pawel Buczak, Nick Lake and Jason Briggs have all taken turns atop the Princeton scoring column.
Board it: Saturday's game against UNC Greensboro featured both the highest number of rebounds for Princeton this season (43) as well as the highest number of combined rebounds in a game this season (82).
Turnovers: Princeton has had 65 total turnovers in the last six games. In the first five games of the season, Princeton had 99 giveaways.
We can drive 65: Princeton's 65 points against UNC Greensboro were its most since its last win, when Princeton scored 73 to beat Fordham in November.
From the line: Princeton hit a season-high 17 free throws on a season-high 23 attempts against UNC Greensboro. Still, however, Princeton's opponent continued a season-long streak of getting to the line more often than the Tigers, as UNCG was 19 of 27 from the stripe.
Winning the glass: Going by game-by-game the rebounding battle, Princeton's record is 6-5. When the Tigers out-rebounded UNC Greensboro, it marked the third time in the last four games Princeton has had more rebounds than its opponent. Princeton hasn't won a game this season in which it hasn't also won the rebounding battle.
Takeaways, not giveaways: Princeton has not had more turnovers than its opponent in any of the last three games.
Playing the percentages: Princeton's shooting percentage from the field, from the three-point line and from the free-throw line is higher than its opponent on the season.
Free throws are key: Princeton's opponents have made 69 more free throws and have taken 104 more free throws than the Tigers this season, an average of 6.3 makes and 9.5 attempts per game.
League leaders: Through the weekend's games, Princeton led the Ivy League in scoring defense, limiting its opponents to 59.6 points per game, as well as in three-point field goal percentage defense, allowing just 30% of opposing threes to fall. Princeton also leads in rebounding defense, allowing 32.1 boards per game to its opponents, and in rebounding margin, grabbing an average of 1.5 more rebounds per game than its opponents.
More rebounding: Through the weekend, Princeton is one of just two Ivy League teams, along with Columbia, that is pulling down an average of more rebounds per game than its opponents.
Comfort-ing stats: Rookie John Comfort has played 21 of his season's 29 minutes and scored nine of his season's 12 points in the last two games.
Starter Schroeder: Marcus Schroeder's back-to-back starts versus Lafayette and UNCG were the junior's first back-to-back starts since Dec. 22 & 30 2007 against Marshall and Monmouth.
Getting better: Princeton's time of holding the lead has grown in each of the last three games.
Go '11: Thanks to Dan Mavraides' 17 points and 10 from Kareem Maddox, the sophomores were Princeton's highest-scoring class for the first time this season against UNCG.
