Field Hockey Rallies for 3-2 Win at American
October 11, 2009 | Field Hockey
WASHINGTON, D.C. (10/11/09) -- The fourth-ranked Princeton field hockey team scored twice in the final 11 minutes to come from behind and defeat American 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. Senior Christina Bortz tied the game with 10 minutes to go and sophomore Kathleen Sharkey provided the game winner in the final minute.
Princeton never led in the game until the final minute when Sharkey scored the go-ahead goal. Anne-Meike DeWiljes scored on a direct corner in the 13th minute to put the Eagles ahead 1-0. Princeton answered quickly as freshman Julia Reinprecht scored on a corner off a feed from Sharkey after Cesan inserted the ball to begin the corner.
The game was tied at the half but American's Savannah Graybill put her team ahead 2-1 in the first minute of the second half as Melissa Casale set up Graybill for a one-time shot.
Princeton trailed by a goal until the 60th minute when Bortz scored to knot the game up at 2-2. Sharkey dribbled into the circle and fed the ball to senior Kaitlin Donovan, who got it to Bortz for the goal.
The Tigers then went ahead with 54 seconds left on the clock as Sharkey netted her team-leading 13th goal of the season. Sophomore Katie Reinprecht carried the ball up the field and slipped it to Sharkey for the game-winning goal.
Princeton outshot American 15-4 and outcornered the Eagles 6-2. Junior goalkeeper Jennifer King made one save for the win, while American's Alyssa Poorman made six saves.
Princeton improved to 10-2 overall with the win, while American fell to 6-6 overall. The Tigers are back in action next Saturday at Brown.
