Field Hockey Clinches Ivy League Title in 10-1 Win Over Cornell

PRINCETON, N.J. (10/30/09) - The Princeton field hockey team defeated Cornell, 10-1, on Friday, Oct. 30 to clinch its fifth straight Ivy League title and NCAA berth. It marks the Tigers' 19th overall Ivy title and 14th in the last 15 years.
The game marked Senior Night, as the Class of 2010 including Christina Bortz, Lauren Capps, Kaitlyn Perrelle, Kaitlin Donovan and Cynthia Wray were given the proper send off, winning Princeton's 18th straight Ivy League game.
Freshman Michelle Cesan paced the Tigers with three goals and one assist, while sophomore Katie Reinprecht had one goal and three helpers. Sophomores Kathleen Sharkey and Alyssa Pyros also had multiple-point efforts with two points apiece.
Reinprecht put the Tigers on the scoreboard at 13:18 on a long shot from just inside the circle. She then set up Cesan's back-to-back goals within 1:44 to give Princeton a 3-0 lead in the first 21 minutes of the game.
Catie De Stio tallied the lone goal of the night for the Big Red at 32:01.
Freshman Julia Reinprecht closed out the first half with a goal to give Princeton a 4-1 lead. With time winding down, Princeton was awarded a penalty corner. Its initial shot rebounded back out on the turf where Cesan batted the ball to Reinprecht who sent it into the right corner of the goal.
The Tigers came out of the second half adding six more goals. Sharkey tallied her first of two goals 4:35 into the second frame and senior Kaitlin Donovan followed scoring on a wide open opportunity off of a Pyros cross. Just over two minutes later Cesan recorded a hat trick with an unassisted marker. Sophomore Rachel Neufeld blasted a shot in on Cornell's goalie in the 52nd minute. Sharkey added her second goal at 62:14 and senior Christina Bortz notched a goal two minutes later with helped from Alexandra Douwes.
Princeton outshot Cornell 23-4 and took 11 corners to Cornell's three. Senior Cynthia Wray started the game in goal and played the first 35 minutes without having to make a save. Junior Jennifer King started the second and made three stops. Cornell's Alex Botte finished the night with eight saves.
Princeton improved to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the Ivy League. Cornell drops to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in the Ivy League.
Princeton will play its final game of the regular season on Friday, Nov. 6 at Penn. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
