Last time out: Rutgers led Princeton on the boards by 13 and on the scoreboard by 14 at the end of Thursday night's contest, a 58-44 win. Scarlet Knights sophomore center Gregory Echenique had a double-double for the second straight year against Princeton, this time scoring 21 points with 11 rebounds. While Rutgers shot only 37 percent from the field, the host team benefited from Princeton shooting 28.8 percent. Douglas Davis had his best scoring night in a year, with his first 20-point game since scoring 27 at Manhattan Dec. 14, 2008.
Last time vs. Lafayette: The Leopards won a 54-53 game last Dec. 30 in Easton, a game in which the lead was never more than seven points either way. That loss dropped Princeton to 2-8, but the Tigers went on to win their next seven games. The Leopards return everyone who played in last season's meeting except Andrew Brown, who scored 14 points with the help of 7-for-7 shooting from the free-throw line. Michael Gruner led all scorers with 15 points for Lafayette, while Douglas Davis and Dan Mavraides scored 11 apiece for Princeton. Lafayette led on the boards, 36-28, while outshooting Princeton 38.6 percent to 37.7 percent.
It's a streak-snapper for someone: Princeton enters Sunday's game having lost four straight, while Lafayette has lost three in a row.
Close games: Princeton and Lafayette have seen their last three meetings decided by five points or fewer. Before last year's one-point win, Lafayette won in OT by five at Jadwin, and Princeton won the year before by two in Easton.
Home sweet home?: The road team in the Princeton-Lafayette series has won six of the last seven contests, and six straight before last season. Princeton has not won against Lafayette in Jadwin since Dec. 21, 2001, when 18 points apiece from Will Venable and Ahmed El-Nokali helped the Tigers to a 67-61 win in an Ivy championship season.
Davis heats up: Douglas Davis scored 20 points at Rutgers, his third career 20-point game and first since Dec. 14, 2008, when he scored a career-high 27 at Manhattan. He had 25 in his collegiate debut Nov. 14, 2008 against Central Michigan.
Carril's college on Carril's court: Pete Carril's alma mater will have its first game on Carril Court, which was named for the 1952 Lafayette alum and 29-season Princeton coach last February.
Cold shooting: Princeton's 28.8 percent field goal rate against Rutgers was the team's lowest since Feb. 2, 2007 when the Tigers shot 26.7 percent at Yale.
Turnovers: Princeton has had between 12 and 14 turnovers in five of six games last year. The only game outside of that range was the 27-turnover evening against Army Nov. 21.
Defense: Despite the loss, Rutgers' 37 percent shooting was the lowest of the season for a Princeton opponent.
Tigers on the stripe: Rutgers made 20 free throws on 23 attempts Thursday night, both season-highs for a Princeton opponent.
Swatted: Rutgers blocked nine Princeton attempts, the most blocks for a Princeton opponent since St. Bonaventure blocked 10 on Dec. 6, 2008.
On target: Princeton will be looking to out-shoot its opponent for the first time since the season opener at Central Michigan. The Tigers have also had as many or more fouls called on them than their opponent in each of the last five games.
Rebounding: Princeton has been out-rebounded in each of the last three games, by 17 at George Washington and Cal and by 13 at Rutgers.
Doesn't equal a win: Princeton's opponent has had more assists and fewer turnovers in each of the last three games.
Reliable Tigers: Three Princeton players have scored in all three games this year: Dan Mavraides, Ian Hummer and Douglas Davis. Hummer and Davis are the only two Tigers to have scored in and played in every game of their Princeton careers.
Saunders the shooter: Patrick Saunders is the only Tiger above 50 percent from the field, hitting 13 of his 23 shots for a 56.5 percent rate. Saunders had 14 points at California and 12 at George Washington, leading the Tigers both times.
Princeton's leading rebounder is...: The Princeton offense likes players that can do a bit of everything, so it's not too surprising that Princeton's leading rebounder isn't one of the biggest Tigers. Marcus Schroeder, a 6-3 senior guard, has the top average at 3.7 rpg.
Helpers: Two Tigers have positive assist-to-turnover ratios, senior guard Marcus Schroeder (14 assists, 9 turnovers), freshman forward Will Barrett (6 assists, 4 turnovers) and freshman center Brendan Connolly (2 assists, 1 turnover).
Looking ahead: Princeton will not face a team with a winning record heading into this weekend until visiting Harvard on Feb. 5, a stretch of 10 games.
