Game Notes
Man of the hour: Princeton head coach Pete Carril will have the main court at Jadwin Gym named in his honor, making Princeton's home court just the second in the Ivy League to be named. The other is Howard Williams Court at Brown, named for a 1917 graduate of the university.
More Carril: In his 29 seasons at Princeton (1967-96), Pete Carril coached Princeton to 514 wins, 13 Ivy titles, 11 NCAA Tournament berths, two NIT berths and the 1975 NIT title, still the only postseason championship an Ivy League school has won. Princeton's 1996 win over UCLA is the last time a lower-seeded Ivy League team won an NCAA Tournament game.
Last time vs. Harvard: Dan Mavraides had a career-high 22 points and Douglas Davis added 19 as the Tigers outscored Harvard 77-71 on Jan. 31 despite 27 points from Jeremy Lin and 58.5% shooting from the Crimson. Princeton had just six turnovers in the game.
Fast-forward through the Ivy: Princeton will make a complete tour of the seven other Ivy teams over a 19-day span from Feb. 20-Mar. 10.
Last time vs. Dartmouth: An 11-2 run over five minutes late in the second half opened an 11 point lead for the Tigers in a 59-54 win at Dartmouth Jan. 30. Princeton had four players in double-figures, led by Pawel Buczak with 14 points, to overcome 24 from Alex Barnett.
History not with Harvard: Harvard has tough historical odds to overcome in Jadwin Gym. Since the first meeting in the building during the 1969-70 season, Harvard has won just four times, in 1984, 1985 1988 and 1989. Princeton won the first 14 in the building and has won the last 19.
Not much Green in Princeton: Dartmouth also has had little success in Jadwin Gym, winning only twice in 39 meetings. The Big Green won in 1987, after Princeton won the first 17 contests, and in 2007.
Career night for Finley: Junior center Zach Finley had 12 points and 15 rebounds against Penn, the most rebounds for any Tiger since Mason Rocca '00 had 18 boards in the NIT win over Georgetown in 1999.
More Finley: Finley's double-double was his second after 14 points and 11 rebounds against Seton Hall last season. It was one of four double-doubles Princeton players had last season, and no current Tiger except Finley has achieved the statistical standard in his career.
Swats for Saunders: Rookie Patrick Saunders had six blocks against Penn, the most for any Tiger against a Division I team since Chris Young '02 also had six against Brown in 2000. Zach Finley had seven blocks against Chaminade in Hawaii last season.
Turnovers are for bakeries: Princeton's 20 turnovers against Penn were its most since Dec. 2 and the 26-turnover game against South Carolina. Since then, Princeton has had no more than 15 turnovers in a game. It was Princeton's third 20-turnover game of the season, with South Carolina and 21 against Central Michigan in the season-opener.
Guard that glass: Penn's 18 offensive rebounds Tuesday were the most for a Princeton opponent this season, and the 43 total boards tied a season-high for an opponent. The other 43-rebound game for Princeton's opponent came at Yale last weekend, which had the previous season-high for offensive boards with 16 in breaking Princeton's seven-game winning streak.
Still good enough: Penn's .333 shooting percentage was the lowest for a Princeton opponent in a Princeton loss this season.
More good enough: Tuesday's game was just the third time this season, and first since the other OT loss to Maine on Nov. 19, that the Tigers have lost despite having a better field goal percentage than their opponent.
More blocks: Princeton's nine blocks, fueled by Saunders' six, were a high for Princeton this season.
60-plus: For the second time this season, Princeton has allowed its opponents 60 or more points in each of the last three games. The current stretch, however, is the only one in which Princeton has lost all three games.
Free throws: Princeton has taken more free-throw attempts than its opponent only three times this season. In Tuesday's game, it was almost a 2-to-1 margin, with Penn shooting 30 free throws and Princeton 16. Princeton's opponents have shot 145 more free throws this season than have the Tigers, an average of seven per game.
Whistles: Princeton has been called for more fouls than its opponent in all but three games this season. In each of those three games, the opponent was called for only one more foul than the Tigers.
Raising the Comfort level: Freshman John Comfort played a season-high 19 minutes against Penn and had two three-pointers for the first time in his young career. His six points tied a season-high, with the other six-point game also coming on ESPNU against UNC Greensboro on Jan. 3.
Schroeder helper: Junior guard Marcus Schroeder tied a season high with six assists against Penn. Since regaining his starting role Dec. 30 at Lafayette, Schroeder has had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 37:18.
More Saunders: In addition to his six blocks, Saunders tied a career high with 11 points and set a top mark with nine rebounds. Saunders has had a rebound in all 18 games he has played this season (missed Dec. 30 at Lafayette and Jan. 3 vs. UNCG) and has six games with at least five boards.
More Finley: Zach Finley's big rebounding night came in his only start of the season. He started all but one game last season (the season finale vs. Penn) and started all but one Ivy game as a freshman. Finley's 12 points were his most since 13 in the season finale vs. Penn last season.
Miles on Mavraides: Dan Mavraides' 43 minutes against Penn were the most of his career.
Staying power: 96% of Princeton's points this season overall, as well as 99% of points in the Ivy League season, have been scored by non-seniors.
Hey Ma: Zane Ma, recovering from a knee injury, suited up for the first time this season vs. Penn.
