Davis, Buczak Named Ivy League Honorable Mention
March 11, 2009 | Men's Basketball
PRINCETON -- A day after both scored double-digit points to lead Princeton to its first win at The Palestra since 2004, Douglas Davis and Pawel Buczak were given Ivy League honorable mention status by the league's coaches.
The two names on the 15-person All-Ivy list were Princeton's most since 2006 and the honors are the first for either honoree. Last season, Noah Savage '08 was named second-team All-Ivy a year after the Tigers received no all-league honors. Three seasons ago, current assistant coach Scott Greenman '06 was a first-team All-Ivy selection while Justin Conway '07 and Luke Owings '07 were honorable mention.
Davis is the first freshman in program history to finish the season leading the team in scoring. His 12.3 points per game ranked ninth in the Ivy League and tops among freshmen. Davis scored double-digit points in 20 of 27 games, including a season-best seven-game streak with double-digit points to close the season. After opening his collegiate career with 25 points against Central Michigan on Nov. 14, Davis topped 20 once more with 27 at Manhattan a month later.
Buczak was a multi-faceted player for the Tigers in his breakout junior season, leading the team with a .550 field-goal percentage that ranked third in the Ivy League. Though a 6-10 center, Buczak had a "Princeton offense" kind of season, proving he could shoot and pass as well as anyone on the floor. He hit nine three-pointers, co-led the team in rebounding at 4.1 per game, was second on the team with 56 assists, second with 18 blocked shots and second with 25 steals. Buczak had eight double-digit scoring games, setting a career-best with 15 points that he hit three times during the season.
The pair helped the Tigers improve five games in the Ivy League and vault from a tie at the bottom of the standings in 2008 to a tie for second place in 2009. The five-game Ivy improvement is the largest for a Princeton team since the 1953 to 1954 seasons when the team played in the Eastern Intercollegiate Basketball League. Princeton's 13 overall wins were its most since 2005, and its jump from six to 13 wins is the team's greatest increase since the 1966 to 1967 seasons.
