Game Notes
Last win in Ithaca: Princeton defeated Cornell 76-68 in double overtime in its last win in Ithaca, Feb. 17, 2006. Current assistant coach Scott Greenman was second among all scorers with 27 points (Noah Savage '08 had 28).
Splitsville: Of the five Ivy series Princeton has completed this season, the last four have split. Princeton lost to Brown and Yale the first time around and won the rematch, while the reverse happened with Dartmouth and Columbia. Princeton defeated Cornell the first time around.
300 game: Douglas Davis became the fifth Princeton freshman to score 300 points Friday at Columbia. His 307 points put him alongside Chris Young (387 in 1999), Spencer Gloger (336 in 2000), Kit Mueller (329 in 1988) and John Smyth (319 in 1983). Freshmen became eligible to play at Princeton for the 1979-80 season.
Tigers in the Ivy rankings: As a team in overall games, Princeton ranks first in the Ivy League in scoring defense (57.2 ppg allowed), free-throw percentage (.743), field goal percentage defense (.396), three-point field goal percentage defense (.292) and rebounding defense (31.9 rpg allowed).
More Tigers in the Ivy rankings: In league games, Marcus Schroeder is the Ivy's most accurate three-point shooter at .560. Princeton leads in scoring defense (55.4), free-throw percentage (.762) and three-point field-goal percentage (.411).
Sydney Johnson vs. Cornell: Sydney Johnson was a perfect 8-0 against Cornell as a player and is 1-2 against the Big Red as a head coach.
Johnson vs. Donahue:
Between his time as an assistant at Penn and head coach at Cornell,
Steve Donahue has gotten the better of Sydney Johnson's teams 8 of 12
times. Donahue's Quakers beat Princeton the first six times Johnson was
a player, but the Tigers won the last three including the 1996 Ivy
playoff. Donahue leads 2-1 with both men in their current roles.
Mr. Jones and me: Princeton will be taking on James and Joe Jones
back-to-back for the fifth time since Joe Jones took over at Columbia
in 2003-04. Princeton has never been swept in back-to-back Jones
meetings but have swept them only once, in 2004. Princeton defeated James Jones' Yale team last Saturday.
Davis is Ivy Rookie of the Week: Douglas Davis won his third Ivy Rookie of the Week honor this week for two double-digit scoring games against Brown and Yale last weekend. Dan Mavraides is the only other Tiger to be honored with an Ivy weekly award, having claimed the first Ivy League Player of the Week honor in February.
Good shots: Princeton has shot at least 40% from the field in each of the last five games.
Long-distance breakup: Princeton's three-point percentage at Columbia, .286 (6 for 21) was its lowest since also going 6 for 21 in a win against UNC Greensboro Jan. 3. The Tigers had only one lower percentage from three-point land this season, going 7 for 31 (.226) against Central Connecticut State on Dec. 20.
Need help: Princeton's nine assists at Columbia broke a seven-game streak of at least 10 assists.
Up the 'D': Four of the last five games in which Princeton has allowed its opponent to shoot 45% or better from the field, all since Feb. 13 at Yale, have gone for Princeton losses. Columbia shot 45.5% Friday night.
Up the 'D' on three: Columbia shot 41.2% (7 of 17) from three-point range Friday, making it just the second time this season Princeton has allowed an opponent to shoot 40% or better from the line in back-to-back games after Yale also did so last weekend. The other set of such games was Dec. 20-30 against Central Connecticut State and Lafayette.
Whistles: The eight fouls called on Columbia last night were the fewest against a Division I Princeton opponent all season.
Pride of the Lions: Columbia's 13 assists were the most for a Princeton opponent since Feb. 14 at Brown (15).
Blockage: Columbia blocked zero shots against the Tigers, the first time all season Princeton didn't get a shot blocked.
On the road again: Princeton has been outshot from the field in eight of the last nine road games, with the Dartmouth game Jan. 30 the only exception.
Now boarding: Princeton has out-rebounded its opponents in back-to-back games for the first time since Dec. 14-20 at Manhattan and CCSU. Princeton has out-rebounded its foes in three straight games only once this season, back in November.
More for Marcus: Marcus Schroeder's nine points at Columbia were his most since scoring 10 against Cornell Feb. 6. His three three-pointers were a season-high against a Division I opponent. His six rebounds were also the most against a D-I foe since eight against Lehigh Jan. 7, and his three steals were a season high.
Stritts and starts: Mike Strittmatter has started the last four games, tying a career-long streak. He started four straight games as a freshman as well.
