Men's Basketball Hosts Annual Postseason Banquet
April 08, 2009 | Men's Basketball
Tuesday night saw the annual Princeton men's basketball banquet in which Sydney Johnson, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach, and the Princeton basketball community awarded special honors and recognized the team's outgoing seniors.
Freshman Patrick Saunders was the recipient of the Bob Rock Sixth Man Award in recognition of his relentless work ethic and positive attitude. Saunders started the season's first nine games and played off the bench in every game thereafter in which he was available, finishing with a .469 field goal percentage and posting three double-digit scoring games, each one off the bench.
The B.F. Bunn Trophy, which recognizes the player with the greatest contribution to the team through sportsmanship, play and influence, went to junior Pawel Buczak. Noted for his tremendous improvement from his sophomore to his junior seasons, Buczak was an Ivy League honorable mention this season, scoring in double-digits eight times and hiting his career-high with 15 points on three occasions.
Junior Marcus Schroeder earned the Paul Friedman Award, which recognizes extraordinary dedication to the team. Schroeder was lauded for maintaining a high level of preparation and practice whether in a starting role or not. Though he played heavy minutes as a freshman, Schroeder did not end his sophomore season nor start his junior year as a starter, but worked his way back into a starting role for the last 18 games of the season.
The Guardian of the Program Award, which goes to a member of the Princeton basketball community outside the team, was awarded to Jadwin Gym monitor Vernon Bugg for his daily positive interactions with the players and coaching staff around their daily visits to the facility for practice and games.
After Johnson gave the podium to seniors Michael Strittmatter and Jason Briggs for some humorous final thoughts on their time with the program, Johnson recognized the progress the program had made in 2008-09. Princeton improved from a 6-23 overall record to 13-14 this season, and 3-11 in the Ivy League to 8-6, good for a second-place tie in the league.
