Newark Schoolkids Pay Visit to Men's Basketball Coaching Staff
May 21, 2009 | Men's Basketball
PRINCETON -- Students in third through fifth grade from the University Heights Charter School in Newark recently visited the Princeton men's basketball coaching staff to reach the youngsters in a university setting and through sports.
University Heights Charter School serves 215 students in grades K-5 and is directed by a Princeton alumnus, Misha Simmonds '97, a class mate of the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach of Princeton basketball, Sydney Johnson '97. The school "seeks to develop in its students the character, scholarship, and leadership necessary for success in life, college, and community."
Classrooms at the school are named after teacher alma maters, and fieldtrips to college campuses are common.
As part of the Princeton visit, students toured the Princeton campus and spent time with assistant coaches Brian Earl '99 and Scott Greenman '06 who shared their thoughts on the values of education.
“For most of our students, this was the first time they went to a college campus," Simmonds said during the visit. "Before today's visit, the idea of going to college was very abstract. Now it is something real that will motivate them for the rest of their lives.”
