Italian Basketball Magazine features Princeton Men's Basketball
June 28, 2009 | Men's Basketball
Italian basketball publication Sutor Magazine recently featured the Princeton men's basketball team and Sydney Johnson '97, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach, who played in Italy after his days in Princeton.
The article discusses in detail Sydney Johnson's professional career in Italy, the high number of former Princeton players who have competed professionally in Europe and the particular influence that the Princeton Offense has had at the collegiate, NBA and international levels.
Sutor Magazine is the brainchild of Gianmaria Vacirca, the general manger of first-division team Premiata Sutor based in Montegranaro, Italy. Vacirca's appreciation for Princeton basketball stems from his personal and professional connection to the Tigers' style of play. As the general manager of Orlandina Basket in 2007, Vacirca signed Princeton alumnus Judson Wallace '05 to his first professional contract in Italy. After leading Orlandina in rebounding that season, Wallace moved on to star for Benneton Treviso and was recently named by EuroBasket.com as one of the top five non-Italian players competing in Italy. In January 2009, Vacirca spent time on the Princeton campus as a guest of Johnson and the Princeton coaching staff.
