PRINCETON (10/15/10) - An early deficit proved too much for the Princeton women's hockey team to overcome in a 4-3 loss to McGill in exhibition action on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton fell behind 2-0 less than three minutes into the game and rallied within a goal on three occasions but could never find the equalizer.
The start of the game was delayed by 30 minutes as McGill was late in arriving to the rink. The Martlets didn't seem to let the late start bother them as they scored twice in the first 2:28 of the game to build a 2-0 lead. Darragh Hamilton opened the scoring 46 seconds in the game and Katia Clement-Heydra made it 2-0 at 2:28 when she stuffed in a rebound.
Princeton cut the lead in half when junior co-captain Paula Romanchuk scored late in the period off the rush. Corey Stearns gave Roamnchuk the puck and she scored with a wrist shot from the top of the circles.
McGill outshot Princeton 11-7 in the first period, but the Tigers slowly began to take control of the game and would outshoot the Martlets in both the second and third periods. Despite the Princeton shot edge, it was McGill that scored the lone goal of the second period when Cathy Chartrand capped a nice passing play with a power-play goal from in front to give McGill a 3-1 lead after two periods.
The Tigers moved back within a goal midway through the third period when Julie Johnson tipped a point shot from Krystyna Bellisario, but McGill regained a two-goal lead five minutes later when Alessandra Lind-Kenny scored on a two-on-one, choosing to shoot.
Princeton pulled goalkeeper Cassie Seguin looking to draw even and got one of the goals back when senior co-captain Laura Martindale's point shot found the back of the net through a screen with 25 seconds remaining. Rose Alleva and Danielle DiCesare assisted on the goal. Princeton kept the goalie pulled and got one more shot late in the game but couldn't draw even.
McGill goaltender Andrea Weckman made 20 saves for the win. Rachel Weber stopped 12 shots in the first 31:02 of action and Seguin stopped four shots in the remaining time.
Princeton will host Yale and Brown in a round-robin scrimmage on Saturday at Baker Rink. The games begin at 12 noon with Princeton facing Yale for two periods.
