Last game's starters:
20 • Douglas Davis • G • Jr.• 5-11 • Philadelphia, Pa.
Has 748 career points, an active best among Tigers ... second-team All-Ivy 2010, honorable mention 2009.
33 • Dan Mavraides • G • Sr. • 6-4 • San Mateo, Calif.
Averaging 21 points per game after a career-high 26 against Rutgers and 16 at Duke ... 2010 second-team All-Ivy.
2 • Kareem Maddox • F • Sr. • 6-8 • Oak Park, Calif.
By starting first two games, has made back-to-back starts for the first time since Feb. 2009 ... has all three of the team's dunks this season ... dished six assists at Duke.
34 • Ian Hummer • F • So. • 6-7 • Vienna, Va.
First two games are his first career starts ... was the only freshman to play in all 31 games last season ... had 17 points against Rutgers and 14 at Duke ... shooting 61.9% this season from the field.
44 • Brendan Connolly • C • So. • 6-11 • Brentwood, Tenn.
Grabbed 11 rebounds, most for any Tiger since Feb. 17, 2009, in win over Rutgers ... made first career starts this season.
The subregional round of the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic will have three days of doubleheaders Monday through Wednesday with Bucknell, Princeton, Presbyterian and host James Madison each facing the other teams.
The Tigers are coming off a 22-9 season that saw their most wins since 1999, their first postseason appearance (CBI semifinals) since 2004, and their first postseason win since 1999.
Princeton was tabbed as the Ivy favorite in the league's media poll for the first time since 2004-05, getting 12 of 17 first-place votes. Harvard (four first-place votes), Cornell (one), Penn, Yale, Brown, Columbia and Dartmouth rounded out the poll.
Princeton returns its top five scorers for the second straight year. This year, the list includes (2009-10 ppg) Douglas Davis (12.7),
Dan Mavraides (11.5), Ian Hummer (6.9), Kareem Maddox (6.2) and Patrick Saunders (5.1). The Tigers also return their top two rebounders in Mavraides (4.3 rpg in 2009-10) and Maddox (3.5) but lose their top two assist-makers, Marcus Schroeder '10 (90 assists in 2009-10) and Pawel Buczak '10 (52).
The Tigers were the top defensive team in the nation by points per game allowed last season at 53.3 ppg.
Under Sydney Johnson, Princeton has improved from a 6-23 record in 2007-08, Johnson's first year, to 22-9 last year. The 14-win improvement is the largest in program history for a period of two or fewer years.
Princeton outrebounded its opponents in 2009-10 for the first time in a season since 2003-04. The margin last year was 30.6 to 29.5 rpg, while the margin in '04 was 30.6 to 27.8 rpg.
From 2007-08, Johnson's first year, to 2009-10, several key statistics improved for Princeton, including field goal percentage (42.5 to 44.1), FG percentage defense (46.8 to 39.8), three-point FG percentage (32.9 to 35.9) and free throw percentage (69.8 to 71.8).
Last season was the first time since 2005-06 that the Tigers had more steals and fewer turnovers than their opponents.
The Tigers will look to get a faster start to this season than in previous years, when Princeton started 2-12 (2007-08), 2-8 (2008-09) and 2-4 (2009-10). Then again, Princeton started 9-4 in 2006-07 and faltered thereafter, going 2-12 in Ivy play. In the last three seasons, Princeton's Ivy record has improved from 3-11 to 8-6 to 11-3.
Princeton will try to fill the contributions of four graduated seniors, Marcus Schroeder, Pawel Buczak, Zach Finley and Nick Lake. Among the tangibles, Finley and Buczak were two of four Tigers last year to stand 6-9 or taller, and Schroeder was a do-everything point guard. His 52 steals led the team, as did his 90 assists. Schroeder was one of four Tigers to grab 100 rebounds and one of two to shoot better than 80% of the line with at least 30 attempts.
Monday's game is the first meeting with James Madison, the only Division I school named for a U.S. President that graduated from the school that is now Princeton. Madison was a 1771 alumnus of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton), and JMU was named for him in 1938.
James Madison is one of six first-time opponents for the Tigers, a list that also includes Presbyterian, Siena, Tulsa, Towson, and whichever team Princeton faces on the second day of the UCF Holiday Classic, whether Furman or Central Florida.
If their 2009-10 scoring totals are replicated, Douglas Davis '12 and Dan Mavraides '11 will become the 27th and 28th members of Princeton's 1,000-point club. Davis is at 748, while Mavraides is at 689. They would become the first members of that club since Judson Wallace '05 and Will Venable '05 reached it one month apart in 2005.
Since freshman eligibility began in the program for the 1978-79 season, only Kit Mueller '91 has reached 1,000 points before his senior year, a feat Davis would match at his current pace. The only other players to reach 1,000 before their senior seasons in program history are Brian Taylor '84 and Bill Bradley '65, who did so using only their sophomore and junior seasons. Taylor entered with the Class of 1973.
Named head coach on April 20, 2007, Sydney Johnson (fourth season) is already the third-longest tenured active coach in the Ivy League, one week short of Harvard's Tommy Amaker. Yale's James Jones is the Ivy dean, having been hired April 27, 1999.
Johnson is in line to coach his 100th game at Princeton on Dec. 29 against Northeastern at the Central Florida tournament. He would become the eighth coach in Princeton history to do so, following Frederick Leuhring, Albert Wittmer, Cappy Cappon, Butch van Breda Kolff, Pete Carril, Bill Carmody and John Thompson III.
Princeton will have a program-record seven games in the month of November, topping the previous high of five.
Monday's game will be just the third for Princeton against a Colonial Athletic Association team at the time of the game. The Tigers swept UNC Wilmington in a home-and-home series in 1997 and 1998 before losing to Drexel in Jadwin Gym in 2005.
Princeton has played three games against schools from the Big South, Presbyterian's conference, at the time of the game, all wins and all on neutral courts. The first was in 1990 against Coastal Carolina in Cleveland, followed by UMBC in Oakland, Calif., in 1993, and most recently in 2006 in Columbus, Ohio, against VMI.
None of Duke's six NCAA Tournament opponents last season were able to outrebound the Blue Devils, but the Tigers won that statistic 31-29 in Princeton's last game on Nov. 14. Georgia Tech was the last team to outrebound Duke, doing so in the ACC final.
Besides playing their home games in New Jersey, what do Ian Hummer and the Nets' Derrick Favors have in common? They are the last two opposing players to have the game's individual high rebounding total against Duke. Hummer pulled down seven boards Nov. 14 against the Blue Devils, seven games after Favors had a game-high total for Georgia Tech in the ACC final.
Princeton will try to make its 27-turnover game at Duke an aberration. The Tigers did so last season after committing 27 against Army on Nov. 21, 2009, never having more than 18 in any other game.
Princeton did not help itself from the free-throw line against Duke, going 8 for 19 (.421) for its lowest percentage since shooting .400 (2 for 5) in a loss at Penn State on Dec. 12, 2007.
Duke's 55.4 field-goal percentage marked the fifth straight game the Tigers have lost when allowing their opponents to shoot 50% from the field. The last win in such a game was Jan. 31, 2009 at Harvard.
Duke had an encore of its performance on Nov. 14, 2000 when it canned 15 three-pointers against Princeton. The Blue Devils hit 14 exactly 10 years later. By comparison, only one Princeton opponent (Central Michigan) last season hit double digits in three pointers with 10.
Even after the 37-point win by Duke on Nov. 14, 2000, the Tigers managed to win the 2001 Ivy League title with an 11-3 mark.
Princeton is 7-2 under Sydney Johnson in its first game after at least seven days without a game, including season-openers, the yearly post-finals break game, a first postseason game, and games after the holidays. The Tigers have not played since Nov. 14.
When he was an assistant coach at Georgetown, Johnson's team swept a home-and-home with James Madison in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons as the only time Johnson has played or coached against the Dukes.
Princeton will have played against teams with "Duke" in the school name or mascot in three of the last six games, after opening the College Basketball Invitational with the Duquesne Dukes last March, facing Duke University on Nov. 14, and now the James Madison Dukes on Monday.
James Madison coach Matt Brady, a South Jersey native from Haddon Heights, is 2-1 against Princeton, with all three games - in 1994, 1995 and 2001 - coming while he was an assistant coach at Saint Joseph's.
Princeton's attendance at the home opener against Rutgers (3,530) was the largest Jadwin crowd for a non-conference game since the 2006 Rutgers game. The Duke game was the largest crowd overall (9,314) to see the Tigers since the Dec., 20, 2006 game at South Carolina.
The only time Sydney Johnson has faced Bucknell was as a player in his senior season. The Bison won 74-62 in overtime on Dec. 10, 1996 at Jadwin Gym, with Johnson scoring seven points. Brian Earl had 13, and Steve Goodrich led the team with 16. It was one of only four losses for the Tigers that season, with the others coming to Indiana, North Carolina, and finally California in the NCAA Tournament.
All-time, Princeton is 9-3 against Bucknell, with only one of those games, the most recent meeting on Nov. 11, 2004 in Syracuse, coming on a neutral court. The Tigers have won the last three after Bucknell won three straight from 1983 to 1996.
Sydney Johnson is 3-4 against Patriot League schools during his head coaching tenure, having faced Army (1-1), Lehigh (1-1) and Lafayette (1-2).
Douglas Davis and Dan Mavraides were the only players to play at least 75% of possible minutes last season. So far this season, Davis, Mavraides, Ian Hummer and Kareem Maddox have all played at least 75% of possible minutes. Sophomores Brendan Connolly and Mack Darrow are the other main beneficiaries of the graduation of four seniors in 2010, averaging 28.5 minutes and 19.5 minutes respectively this season after each averaged less than six minutes a game last season.
Douglas Davis figures to warm up from the field as the season goes along. Through two games, Davis is shooting 33.3% from the field and 16.7% from three-point range. Last season, he shot 43.2% from the field and 42.8% from three-point range.
Dan Mavraides is hot from the field so far this season, shooting a team-best 63.6% from the field and 66.7% from three-point range. He shot 39.9% from the field and 35.6% from three-point range last season.
Brendan Connolly is averaging 7.5 rebounds per game so far. No Tiger has ended a season averaging 7.5 rebounds per game since Bob Roma (7.7) in 1979.
The CBE Classic subregional will be the 17th time in program history that the Tigers will play three games in three days. The first 10 times came between 1906 and 1921 and three times included four games in four days. Princeton did it again once in the 1952, three times between 1973 and 1980, and for the first time in November in 2006 for the BCA Classic and again Nov. 19-21, 2007 for the Maui Invitational.
Princeton's "MARV" patches are in honor of Marvin Bressler, the late professor who came to Princeton in 1963 and began serving in an informal advisor role with the team. He was an inspiration to create the Academic-Athletic Fellows program that serves all Princeton teams. Bressler was an Academic-Athletic Fellow for men's basketball through the 2009-10 season before he passed away on July 7 at age 87.
