Sunday's game will highlight Princeton's second-ever visit to Oklahoma's second-most populous city. Princeton faced Oral Roberts in Tulsa on Nov. 29, 1980 to open that season.
A Princeton basketball alumnus went on to hold the Oklahoma governorship as well as a U.S. Senate seat from the state. Dewey Bartlett '42 was Oklahoma's governor from 1967 to 1971 and held the Senate seat from 1973 until 1979. His son, Dewey Bartlett, Jr., is the current mayor of Tulsa.
Princeton will be making its fourth trip to Oklahoma for the Tulsa game. The ORU game in 1980 was the first, followed by two games in a University of Oklahoma-hosted tournament to open the 2002-03 season and then one game against the Sooners in Oklahoma City on Jan. 3, 2004.
Facing the Golden Hurricane will complete the Oklahoma circuit for the Tigers, who will have faced all four Division I teams from the Sooner State. The Tigers are 0-2 against the University of Oklahoma, 1-0 against Oklahoma State, and 1-3 against Oral Roberts. The win against Oklahoma State was a first-round NCAA Tournament win in 1983 played at Oregon State.
Tulsa is Princeton's fourth first-time opponent in the season's first 10 games after James Madison, Presbyterian and Siena.
The Golden Hurricane will go from facing the "Princeton of the Plains" to facing the actual Princeton, as is one of Oklahoma State's nicknames. The current Cowboys were known as Tigers for about 30 years after the school's founding in 1890. According to the OSU Alumni Association, the school chose orange and black as its colors to honor a popular faculty member's father, who was a Princeton alumnus.
Princeton last faced a Conference USA foe on Dec. 22, 2007 at Marshall, taking a 66-60 defeat. Princeton's last win over a C-USA team came on Jan. 6, 2007 over Rice at Jadwin Gym by a 51-28 score. The Tigers are 6-3 against C-USA schools at the time of the game, including Marquette (1-0), UNC Charlotte (1-0), UAB (2-0), Louisville (0-1), Rice (1-1) and Marshall (1-1). The most recent Marshall game was the only one against a C-USA team in Sydney Johnson's tenure.
Princeton's next win will be Sydney Johnson's 200th NCAA victory, combining his wins as a player at Princeton (80), an assistant coach at Georgetown (72) and a head coach at Princeton (47).
Though the Tigers will not play at Jadwin Gym again until Jan. 5, Princeton has won its first three home games for the first time since the 2004-05 season. The Tigers last won their first four home games against Division I teams in the 1999-2000 season.
The current six-game road trip is the longest consecutive string of games away from Jadwin since Princeton opened the 2006-07 season with seven games away from home.
Five Tigers had all of Princeton's points at Monmouth. Douglas Davis led with 18 points, while Kareem Maddox had 13, Dan Mavraides had 12, Patrick Saunders had 11 and Ian Hummer had 10. It hadn't been very long since five Tigers accounted for all of the team's points, as the same statistical anomaly was accomplished Dec. 6, 2009 against Lafayette.
Tulsa had used the same lineup for six straight games following the opener before subbing 6-6 junior forward Joe Richard for 6-11 junior center Steven Idlet. The other four players have started seven straight games for the Golden Hurricanes, including 6-9 junior forward D.J. Magley, 6-4 freshman guard Jordan Clarkson, 6-4 senior guard Justin Hurtt, and 6-4 sophomore guard Scottie Haralson.
Both head coaches are in their first head coaching positions. Tulsa's Doug Wojcik is in his sixth season in Oklahoma after helping Michigan State to the 2005 Final Four as an assistant coach. Sydney Johnson also left a Final Four team, Georgetown in 2007, to become a head coach.
This year's Princeton team has scored the most points through nine games (641) since the 1971-72 team, which had 759 through nine games. The Tigers will maintain that title through nine games as long as they score 29 points against Tulsa, as the 2002-03 Tigers scored 669 through 10. The '71-'72 team scored 833 through 10 games.
The '71-'72 team was the last Tiger team to start the season with as many as nine games scoring at least 60 points, as these Tigers have done. That team started the season with 14 straight games with at least 60 points and missed meeting that mark in every game by a single point in a single game, as Penn held Princeton to 59 in the 15th game of the season.
Princeton has scored at least 60 points in nine straight games for the first time in a single season since February and March 1997, when the Tigers did so in the last nine regular-season games of Sydney Johnson's collegiate career. If the Tigers reach 60 against Tulsa for a 10-game streak, it would be the longest streak since the last 12 games of the 1971-72 season.
Tulsa's statistics suggest the Golden Hurricane has no problem playing at a high-scoring pace. Tulsa is averaging 71.0 points per game and allowing 67.9 ppg. The 54 points Tulsa scored against Oklahoma State Wednesday night were its fewest of the season and the first time it had not reached 60 this season.
In first halves this season, Princeton is shooting 50.2% (126 of 251). In second halves, Princeton is shooting 42.7% (90 of 211). The scoring average for six of the top seven Princeton scorers is lower in the second half than the first, with Ian Hummer as the exception. Hummer is scoring 6.8 points per game in the first 20 minutes and 7.6 ppg after the break.
Princeton has shot almost twice as many free throws in the second half (106) as in the first half (55) this season. Princeton's percentage is higher in the first half (70.9%) than in the second half (64.2%).
In games Princeton has won, Dan Mavraides is averaging a team-best 16.7 points per game. In losses, he is averaging 8.7 points. Kareem Maddox is averaging 12.3 points in Princeton's six wins, including his 30-point outburst against Siena, but is averaging 4.7 points in losses. Both Ian Hummer and Douglas Davis are averaging comparable double figures in wins and losses.
Princeton is shooting 44.4% (36 of 81) from beyond the arc in the last four games, all wins.
Princeton recorded 11 of its 36 blocks on the season just in the last game against Monmouth. It was Princeton's most blocks since Nov. 26, 1999 against Ohio (11).
Princeton has outshot its opponents from the field overall and from three-point range in five of the last seven games.
Princeton hasn't shot under 42.4% from the field this season, the percentage it hit against Presbyterian on Nov. 24. The Tigers have shot 40% in 13 straight games dating back to last season, its longest streak since a 14-gamer bridging the '05-'06 and '06-'07 seasons.
Six of Princeton's last seven regular-season losses have come by a total of 14 points. Aside from the Duke game, the deficits were one (James Madison), two (Maine, Presbyterian) and three (Cornell twice, Brown) points.
Princeton is 2-0 this season when it holds opponents under 40% shooting, as it did against Bucknell and Siena.
Princeton has won the turnover statistic in five straight games. Those games were the first time this season Princeton has won the turnover statistic.
Princeton has been outrebounded in each of the last four games, the only games this season in which Princeton has been outrebounded. Even so, the Tigers have managed to win all four of those games and seven of the last eight games they've been outrebounded, dating back to last season.
Princeton is 5-0 this season when it shoots at least 70% from the free-throw line, as it did against Rutgers, Bucknell, Siena, Lafayette and Saint Joseph's.
The Tigers are 5-1 when leading at the half and 1-2 when trailing. Princeton was down to Siena by four at the half and won in OT, and the Tigers were up 13 on James Madison at the break before losing by one.
Princeton has used two starting lineups this season. Ian Hummer, Douglas Davis, Dan Mavraides and Brendan Connolly have started all nine games, while Patrick Saunders has started in place of Kareem Maddox the last six games.
Entering Saturday's Ivy League action, Princeton led the Ivy in field goal percentage (.471) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.1). Individually, Douglas Davis' six 3-pointer game at Monmouth lifted him into the Ivy lead in threes per game at 3.1.
A Tiger overview entering 2010-11...
•The Tigers are
coming off a 22-9 season that saw their most wins since 1999, their
first postseason appearance (CBI semifinals) since 2004, and their first
postseason win since 1999.
•Princeton was tabbed as the Ivy favorite in the league's media poll for the first time since 2004-05, getting 12 of 17 first-place votes. Harvard (four first-place votes), Cornell (one), Penn, Yale, Brown, Columbia and Dartmouth rounded out the poll.
•Princeton returns its top five scorers for the second straight year. This year, the list includes (2009-10 ppg) Douglas Davis (12.7), Dan Mavraides (11.5), Ian Hummer (6.9), Kareem Maddox (6.2) and Patrick Saunders (5.1). The Tigers also return their top two rebounders in Mavraides (4.3 rpg in 2009-10) and Maddox (3.5) but lose their top two assist-makers, Marcus Schroeder '10 (90 assists in 2009-10) and Pawel Buczak '10 (52).
•The Tigers were the top defensive team in the nation by points per game allowed last season at 53.3 ppg.
•Under Sydney Johnson, Princeton has improved from a 6-23 record in 2007-08, Johnson's first year, to 22-9 last year. The 14-win improvement is the largest in program history for a period of two or fewer years.
•Princeton
outrebounded its opponents in 2009-10 for the first time in a season
since 2003-04. The margin last year was 30.6 to 29.5 rpg, while the
margin in '04 was 30.6 to 27.8 rpg.
•From 2007-08, Johnson's first
year, to 2009-10, several key statistics improved for Princeton,
including field goal percentage (42.5 to 44.1), FG percentage defense
(46.8 to 39.8), three-point FG percentage (32.9 to 35.9) and free throw
percentage (69.8 to 71.8).
•Last season was the first time since 2005-06 that the Tigers had more steals and fewer turnovers than their opponents.
•Princeton
will try to fill the contributions of four graduated seniors, Marcus
Schroeder, Pawel Buczak, Zach Finley and Nick Lake. Among the tangibles,
Finley and Buczak were two of four Tigers last year to stand 6-9 or
taller, and Schroeder was a do-everything point guard. His 52 steals led
the team, as did his 90 assists. Schroeder was one of four Tigers to
grab 100 rebounds and one of two to shoot better than 80% of the line
with at least 30 attempts.
•If their 2009-10 scoring totals are
replicated, Douglas Davis '12 and Dan Mavraides '11 will become the 27th
and 28th members of Princeton's 1,000-point club. Through nine games this season, Davis is at 862,
while Mavraides is at 773. They would become the first members of that
club since Judson Wallace '05 and Will Venable '05 reached it one month
apart in 2005.
•Since freshman eligibility began in the program
for the 1978-79 season, only Kit Mueller '91 has reached 1,000 points
before his senior year, a feat Davis would match at his current pace.
The only other players to reach 1,000 before their senior seasons in
program history are Brian Taylor '84 and Bill Bradley '65, who did so
using only their sophomore and junior seasons. Taylor entered with the
Class of 1973.
•Named head coach on April 20, 2007, Sydney Johnson
(fourth season) is already the third-longest tenured active coach in
the Ivy League, one week short of Harvard's Tommy Amaker. Yale's James
Jones is the Ivy dean, having been hired April 27, 1999.
•Johnson
is in line to coach his 100th game at Princeton on Dec. 29 against
Northeastern at the Central Florida tournament. He would become the
eighth coach in Princeton history to do so, following Frederick
Leuhring, Albert Wittmer, Cappy Cappon, Butch van Breda Kolff, Pete
Carril, Bill Carmody and John Thompson III.
•Princeton is tied with Indiana, and behind North Carolina (seven), for the second-most active Division I head coaches produced. The Tigers' five, all disciples of Pete Carril, are Sydney Johnson '97 (Princeton), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond), John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver) and Craig Robinson '83 (Oregon State).
Princeton's "MARV" patches are in honor of Marvin Bressler, the late professor who came to Princeton in 1963 and began serving in an informal advisor role with the team. He was an inspiration to create the Academic-Athletic Fellows program that serves all Princeton teams. Bressler was an Academic-Athletic Fellow for men's basketball through the 2009-10 season before he passed away on July 7 at age 87.
On Tulsa: After starting 4-2, the Golden Hurricane will be looking to break a two-game skid after losses to Ark.-Little Rock and Oklahoma State ... Tulsa lost three starters from last season, including 7-footer Jerome Jordan, who was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks, was traded to the Knicks and now plays in Serbia, as well as 6-3 guard Ben Uzoh, currently with the New Jersey Nets, and 6-6 forward Bishop Wheatley ... Jordan (15.4 ppg) and Uzoh (15.3) were Tulsa's top two scorers ahead of current 6-4 senior guard Justin Hurtt (14.5 ppg '09-'10) ... entering Friday, the Golden Hurricane ranked 12th in C-USA in scoring defense, allowing 67.9 points per game, in assists at 10.9 per game, in steals at 4.6 per game, and in assist-to-turnover ratio at 0.7 ... Tulsa's highest C-USA rank was second in defensive rebounding (31.5) and defensive rebounding percentage (.720) ... Hurtt ranks fifth in C-USA in scoring at 17.1 ppg and fourth in free throw percentage in .884, leading the team in both categories ... 6-6 junior Joe Richard, who made his first start of the season against Oklahoma State, leads the team in rebounding at 6.1 per game ... 6-4 sophomore guard Scottie Haralson, a transfer from UConn who sat out last season due to transfer rules, is fourth in C-USA in threes per game at 2.6 ... the foursome of Hurtt, 6-4 freshman guard Jordan Clarkson, 6-11 junior center Steven Idlet and Haralson account for 76.4% of Tulsa's points this season ... Hurtt has reached double digits in scoring in all eight games this season ... Hurtt is 3 for 13 (23.1%) from beyond the arc in the last two games after starting 14 of 33 (42.4%) through six games ... Haralson is 10 for 21 (47.6%) from the field in the last three games ... Idlet missed the Oklahoma State game with a knee injury, his first missed game this season ... Tulsa freshman Kodi Maduka's sister, Jeomi, played basketball and ran track at Cornell, a foe of the Tigers in the Ivy League ... Tulsa is seeking its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2003 and has won at least 20 games each of the last four seasons, making the NIT in 2009 and 2010 after winning the inaugural CBI, which Princeton was in last season, in 2008.
