Last game's starters:
20 • Douglas Davis • G • Jr. • 5-11 • Philadelphia, Pa.
Has 888 career points, an active best among Tigers ... made four 3-pointers, second-most in a game this season, at Towson last time out... second-team All-Ivy 2010, honorable mention 2009.
33 • Dan Mavraides (mav-RAID-eez) • G • Sr. • 6-4 • San Mateo, Calif.
10 double-digit scoring games of 12 this season ... team is 9-1 when he reaches double digits (loss to Duke), 0-2 when he doesn't ... 2010 second-team All-Ivy.
22 • Patrick Saunders • F • Jr. • 6-8 • Gilford, N.H.
Has reached double digits in scoring in four of the last five games, comprising all four double-digit scoring games this season ... is 11 for 14 from the field in the last two games.
34 • Ian Hummer • F • So. • 6-7 • Vienna, Va.
First season as a starter ... team's leading scorer (14.6 ppg) and leading rebounder (7.0 rpg) ... has scored double digits in 10 of 12 games this season ... has had two double-doubles this season, including last time out at Towson (12 pts., 12 reb.)
44 • Brendan Connolly • C • So. • 6-11 • Brentwood, Tenn.
First season as a starter ... is 6 for 7 from the field over the last two games, leading to 14 of his 40 points this season.
Princeton's 9-3 record is its best through 12 games since 1997-98, when the Tigers were 11-1 and ranked No. 17 in the nation by the AP.
The UCF Holiday Classic will bring Princeton to the Sunshine State for just the fourth time in program history and the first time outside of Miami. The Tigers played two games in Miami against the host Hurricanes in 1948 (split), faced Syracuse and Army in a Miami-hosted tournament in 1963 (lost both), and played at Florida International in 2001 (lost).
Princeton last won an in-season tournament in December 2000, the First Merchants Classic hosted by Ball State in Muncie, Ind., defeating Weber State and the host Cardinals.
The Tigers enter the UCF tournament on a seven-game win streak matching the longest streak in Sydney Johnson's three-plus seasons at Princeton. The Tigers had a seven-game streak in each of the last two seasons.
If Princeton can defeat Northeastern, the eight-game win streak would be the longest since a nine-gamer that ended the 2004 regular season.
Princeton and Northeastern have met twice before, but both games were decades ago. The Huskies won Dec. 8, 1979 in Jadwin Gym, 74-52, and won again on Dec. 28, 1983 in Rochester, N.Y., 55-34.
Whichever team the Tigers face in Thursday's game, whether Furman or UCF, will be Princeton's sixth and final first-time opponent of the regular season. The others were James Madison, Presbyterian, Siena, Tulsa and Towson.
If the Tigers and UCF both win Wednesday, it will not have been very long since Princeton faced an undefeated team this late in the season. On Jan. 5, 2005, Princeton lost 59-46 to No. 5 Duke, which improved to 10-0 with the win.
UCF enters the week ranked No. 19 in the AP poll and No. 21 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll. Princeton's last win over an AP-ranked team came Dec. 19, 1997, 69-64 over No. 23 Wake Forest. Princeton was also ranked at the time, No. 19.
Last time out, Princeton had five players in double figures for the third time this season on the way to defeating Towson 75-65 on Dec. 22. Princeton enjoyed its biggest rebounding edge in a decade, since March 4, 2000 against Brown (+19), when it outrebounded Towson 40-23. Ian Hummer had a double-double, his second both of his career and of the season, with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Patrick Saunders' 7-of-10 shooting led him to a team-high 15 points. Saunders' 15 points and eight boards were personal season-bests.
In the nine games since the Duke contest, Princeton has trailed by double digits only once, against Bucknell, by 11 points and for less than a minute. The Tigers came back to win that game, making it the largest deficit rallied from in a Princeton win this season.
Princeton has not been behind in the last 69:55 of game action, after leading Wagner for the last 9:55 of the first half and all of the second half on Dec. 17, and after never letting Towson get a lead in the game on Dec. 22.
The Towson victory was Sydney Johnson's 50th of his head coaching career, all at Princeton. The victory also moved him above .500 for the first time since the third game of his first season at Princeton in 2007-08. Johnson started 2-0 at Princeton before the Tigers endured a long losing streak on the way to a difficult 6-23 season, but Princeton is 44-26 from the 2008-09 season forward under Johnson.
When the Tigers take the floor against Northeastern, Johnson will become the eighth coach in program history to coach 100 games. In doing so, he follows Frederick Leuhring, Albert Wittmer, Cappy Cappon, Butch van Breda Kolff, Pete Carril, Bill Carmody and John Thompson III.
With 18 games left in the regular season, Johnson is in line to coach 117 games at Princeton by the time the Tigers and the Penn Quakers tip off on Mar. 8, tying him with Bill Carmody for the sixth-most games coached in Princeton history. Now eighth, Johnson would pass his mentor and fellow alum John Thompson III (110), under whom Johnson played when Thompson was a Princeton assistant, and under whom he coached at Georgetown.
Though the Tigers will not play at Jadwin Gym again until Jan. 5, Princeton has won its first three home games for the first time since the 2004-05 season. The Tigers last won their first four home games against Division I teams in the 1999-2000 season.
The current six-game road trip, which the UCF tournament will cap, is the longest consecutive string of games away from Jadwin since Princeton opened the 2006-07 season with seven games away from home.
With a season average of 72.2 points scored, the Tigers have a reasonable chance of getting to 1,000 points on the season while at the UCF tournament, entering with 867 and needing to average 66.5 points in each of the two games to reach 1,000. If Princeton can reach it in the season's 14th game, which is Thursday's contest, these Tigers would be the fastest to 1,000 since the 1971-72 team, which had 1,135 points through 14 games.
At 12 games, this Tiger team has the longest streak of scoring 60+ points in each game to start a season since '71-'72, which had 14 straight. The longest streak in program history to start a season is 25 games, as the '62-'63 team hit 60+ in all of its games.
These Tigers' current 12-game streak is the longest single-season streak of scoring 60+ points since the last 12 games of the '71-'72 season. If the Tigers reach 60 in at least the first game in Florida, it would be the longest such streak since the first 14 games of that season. The '62-'63 team holds the longest such streak in program history at 25 games.
Princeton is also on a 14-game streak of scoring 60+ including the last two games of last season. It is the longest two-season streak since the '70-'71 and '71-'72 teams reached 60+ in 23 straight games. The longest streak in program history belongs to the '61-'62 and '62-'63 teams at 32 games.
The Tigers have played three overtime games in a season for the 15th time in program history. The program record for OT games in a season is five, set in 1980-81. The last time Princeton played four OT games in a season was in 1998-99. The three OT victories tie a program record, set in 1956-57 and matched in 2003-04 and 2005-06.
Kareem Maddox's 31 points at Tulsa, coming four games after he scored 30 points against Siena, made him the first Tiger since Kevin Mullin '84 with two 30-point games in a season and only the second player since Brian Taylor '84 (entered with the Class of 1973) did so six times in the 1971-72 season. If Maddox can reach 30 again this season, he would be just the fourth player in program history, after Bill Bradley '65, Geoff Petrie '70 and Taylor, to have at least three 30-point games in a single season.
With four 3-pointers at Towson, Douglas Davis moved into fifth place by himself on the program's career list of threes made at 158. Davis could move past his coach, Sydney Johnson '97 (162) during the Florida trip. It figures to be a long while before Davis passes another Tiger after Johnson, with Gabe Lewullis '99 in third at 212, Sean Jackson '92 in second at 235, and assistant coach Brian Earl '99 in first at 281.
Davis could also pass 900 career points on the Florida trip, standing at 888 heading into the tournament. Dan Mavraides is also chasing 1,000 career points, standing at 811.
Princeton has had five players scoring in double-figures in three games this season, the first time Princeton has had five players reach double figures in as many as three games since the 1984-85 season. The three games were Dec. 5 against Saint Joseph's, Dec. 8 at Monmouth and Dec. 22 at Towson. It is the first time since 1972 that the Tigers have had three such games in a month's time.
The 1973-74 season was the last time Princeton had four games with five players in double figures, and the 1971-72 season was the last time Princeton had five such games. The 1967-68 team holds the record with nine such games.
Princeton has had as many as six players reach double figures in a game three times, in 1956, 1967 and 2000. The 2000 game, coming Mar. 4 against Brown, is the only time in program history Princeton had seven players in double figures.
The Northeastern game will be Princeton's third this season against a Colonial Athletic Association team after entering the season playing three games all-time against CAA schools at the time of the game. The Tigers swept UNC Wilmington home-and-home in 1997 and 1998 and lost to Drexel in Jadwin Gym in 2005 before losing at James Madison and winning at Towson, both this season.
Princeton has a long history, but not so much a recent history, of facing schools from Furman's Southern Conference. The Tigers are 18-15 all-time against SoCon teams at the time of the game, but only five of those games have occurred in the last two decades and only two of those games have been contested by any of the current players or staff. Princeton swept UNC Greensboro in a home-and-home over the last two seasons.
If Princeton faces UCF, it would be the Tigers' second game this season against a Conference USA team after the Tigers won at Tulsa on Dec. 12. All-time, the Tigers are 7-3 against C-USA schools at the time of the game, but the Tulsa game and a loss at Marshall in December 2007 are the only ones against C-USA teams during Sydney Johnson's tenure.
As of Dec. 19, the latest NCAA release, Princeton's best national statistical ranking was 32nd in 3-point field goal percentage at 39.8%. Individually, Ian Hummer had the top ranking with a 22nd-best 59.6% field goal percentage.
In games Princeton has won, Kareem Maddox is averaging 15.8 points per game and Dan Mavraides is averaging 15.3. In losses, Mavraides is averaging 8.7 points and Maddox 4.7 points. Averages for Ian Hummer and Douglas Davis are higher in losses than wins, with 13.9 for Hummer and 12.8 for Davis in wins and 16.7 for Hummer and 15.0 for Davis in losses.
Princeton has outshot its opponents from the field overall in six of the seven games during the winning streak, with the Monmouth game (43.4% to 44.2%) as the exception.
Princeton hasn't shot under 42.4% from the field in a game this season, the percentage it hit against Presbyterian on Nov. 24. The Tigers have shot 40% in 15 straight games dating back to last season, its longest streak since a 19-gamer to end the 1997-98 season.
During the current seven-game winning streak, Princeton has converted 74.7% of free-throw attempts (112 of 150).
Six of Princeton's last seven regular-season losses have come by a total of 14 points. Aside from the Duke game, the deficits were one (James Madison), two (Maine, Presbyterian) and three (Cornell twice, Brown) points.
Princeton is 4-0 this season when it holds opponents under 40% shooting, as it did against Bucknell, Siena, Tulsa and Wagner.
Princeton is 8-0 this season when it shoots at least 70% from the free-throw line, as it has done in six of the last seven games.
The Tigers are 7-1 when leading at the half and 2-2 when trailing. Princeton was down to Siena by four at the half and to Tulsa by one before winning both in OT, and the Tigers were up 13 on James Madison at the break before losing by one.
Princeton has used two starting lineups this season. Ian Hummer, Douglas Davis, Dan Mavraides and Brendan Connolly have started all 12 games, while Patrick Saunders has started in place of Kareem Maddox the last nine games.
With the Ivy League off until Dec. 28, the Tigers will enter the week ranked first in the Ivy in field goal percentage (.473), paced by players who rank second, third and fourth in the category individually. Ian Hummer is ranked second (.578), ahead of Kareem Maddox (.564) and Patrick Saunders (.514). Douglas Davis is ranked second in the Ivy in 3-pointers per game (2.8) and in minutes played per game (36.6).
A Tiger overview entering 2010-11...
•The Tigers are
coming off a 22-9 season that saw their most wins since 1999, their
first postseason appearance (CBI semifinals) since 2004, and their first
postseason win since 1999.
•Princeton was tabbed as the Ivy favorite in the league's media poll for the first time since 2004-05, getting 12 of 17 first-place votes. Harvard (four first-place votes), Cornell (one), Penn, Yale, Brown, Columbia and Dartmouth rounded out the poll.
•Princeton returns its top five scorers for the second straight year. This year, the list includes (2009-10 ppg) Douglas Davis (12.7), Dan Mavraides (11.5), Ian Hummer (6.9), Kareem Maddox (6.2) and Patrick Saunders (5.1). The Tigers also return their top two rebounders in Mavraides (4.3 rpg in 2009-10) and Maddox (3.5) but lose their top two assist-makers, Marcus Schroeder '10 (90 assists in 2009-10) and Pawel Buczak '10 (52).
•The Tigers were the top defensive team in the nation by points per game allowed last season at 53.3 ppg.
•Under Sydney Johnson, Princeton has improved from a 6-23 record in 2007-08, Johnson's first year, to 22-9 last year. The 14-win improvement is the largest in program history for a period of two or fewer years.
•Princeton
outrebounded its opponents in 2009-10 for the first time in a season
since 2003-04. The margin last year was 30.6 to 29.5 rpg, while the
margin in '04 was 30.6 to 27.8 rpg.
•From 2007-08, Johnson's first
year, to 2009-10, several key statistics improved for Princeton,
including field goal percentage (42.5 to 44.1), FG percentage defense
(46.8 to 39.8), three-point FG percentage (32.9 to 35.9) and free throw
percentage (69.8 to 71.8).
•Last season was the first time since 2005-06 that the Tigers had more steals and fewer turnovers than their opponents.
•Princeton
will try to fill the contributions of four graduated seniors, Marcus
Schroeder, Pawel Buczak, Zach Finley and Nick Lake. Among the tangibles,
Finley and Buczak were two of four Tigers last year to stand 6-9 or
taller, and Schroeder was a do-everything point guard. His 52 steals led
the team, as did his 90 assists. Schroeder was one of four Tigers to
grab 100 rebounds and one of two to shoot better than 80% of the line
with at least 30 attempts.
•If their 2009-10 scoring totals are
replicated, Douglas Davis '12 and Dan Mavraides '11 will become the 27th
and 28th members of Princeton's 1,000-point club. Through 12 games this season, Davis is at 888,
while Mavraides is at 811. They would become the first members of that
club since Judson Wallace '05 and Will Venable '05 reached it one month
apart in 2005.
•Since freshman eligibility began in the program
for the 1978-79 season, only Kit Mueller '91 has reached 1,000 points
before his senior year, a feat Davis would match at his current pace.
The only other players to reach 1,000 before their senior seasons in
program history are Brian Taylor '84 and Bill Bradley '65, who did so
using only their sophomore and junior seasons. Taylor entered with the
Class of 1973.
•Named head coach on April 20, 2007, Sydney Johnson
(fourth season) is already the third-longest tenured active coach in
the Ivy League, one week short of Harvard's Tommy Amaker. Yale's James
Jones is the Ivy dean, having been hired April 27, 1999.
•Princeton is tied with Indiana, and behind North Carolina (seven), for the second-most active Division I head coaches produced. The Tigers' five, all disciples of Pete Carril, are Sydney Johnson '97 (Princeton), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond), John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver) and Craig Robinson '83 (Oregon State).
Princeton's "MARV" patches are in honor of Marvin Bressler, the late professor who came to Princeton in 1963 and began serving in an informal advisor role with the team. He was an inspiration to create the Academic-Athletic Fellows program that serves all Princeton teams. Bressler was an Academic-Athletic Fellow for men's basketball through the 2009-10 season before he passed away on July 7 at age 87.
On Northeastern: Northeastern has won back-to-back games after losing six straight ... the Huskies played three days in Cancun, Mexico from Dec. 22-24 ... among the six losses were a two-point loss at Utah State, where the Aggies have lost once in the last three-plus seasons (to Sweet 16 team Saint Mary's last season), a five-point loss at 11-2 Providence, and a five-point loss against Drexel, which is Louisville's only loss this season ... the Huskies outscored Texas State in Friday's game 40-18 to rally from a 17-point deficit less than five minutes into the second half and win by eight, 86-78 ... Northeastern was predicted to finish seventh in the CAA preseason poll ... Northeastern lost four of its top five scorers from last season, returning only 6-4 senior guard Chiasson Allen from a 20-13 team ... Allen is the team's leading scorer (16.8 ppg) and rebounder (5.8 ppg) this season ... Northeastern has used a different starting five in each of the last four games ... only two players, Allen and 6-10 freshan forward/center Ryan Pierson, have started all 10 games ... Pierson has averaged 12.6 points over the last five games after averaging 2.2 over the first five games ... injuries have been part of the reason for the shuffle, as 6-5 sophomore guard/forward Alwayne Bigby was lost for the season to an undisclosed injury before the exam break earlier this month ... 6-4 sophomore guard Joel Smith did not start the Texas State game after an ankle injury but did play 24 minutes ... 6-2 sophomore guard Jonathan Lee spent a prep year at the Hun School in Princeton in 2008-09 ... Lee had a career-high 22 points in the win over Texas State ... head coach Bill Coen is in his fifth season at Northeastern and has increased his win total each season from the previous one, taking the team to the CBI in 2009 and the NIT in 2010 ... Northeastern last made the NCAA Tournament in 1991, making all seven of its tournament appearances between 1981 and '91 ... entering the Texas State game, the Huskies were ranked 12th in the CAA in field goal percentage (.409), in FG% defense (.459) and in rebounding margin (-4.4) ... Northeastern's highest team ranking was fourth, in FT% (.683), in 3FG% (.379), in turnover margin (+0.78), and in assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.1) ... Allen, the conference's fourth-leading scorer, also had the team's highest individual ranking in the CAA for his second-best 1.9 assist-to-turnover ratio.
On Furman: The Paladins are off to their best record through 10 games since the 1987-88 season, when the team was also 8-2 ... entering the games of Dec. 28, Furman is No. 1 in the Southern Conference in scoring margin (+6.9), free throw percentage (73.7%), rebounding margin (+4.5) and offensive rebound percentage (38.3%) ... 6-6 senior forward Adamu Saaka leads the SoCon in FT% at 88.5% among those with enough attempts to qualify ... 6-8 senior forward Noah States (1st, 60%) and 6-1 senior guard Justin Dehm (2nd, 50%) are the top two players in the SoCon in 3FG% ... if Princeton and Furman meet, it will be a matchup of Ivy League alumni coaches, as Furman's Jeff Jackson is a 1984 Cornell alumnus ... Jackson did not letter with the Big Red, but he was a student assistant coach for two seasons ... Jackson is in his fifth season at Furman ... the Paladins were 13-17 last season and returned their top 12 scorers for this season ... the Paladins are coming off a huge win on Dec. 22 over a South Carolina team that fell to 7-3 with the loss but has lost only to Ohio State and Michigan State aside from Furman ... Furman's two losses are to Penn State, 70-49 on Nov. 28, and at Kent State, 78-74 on Nov. 19 ... Saaka is the team's leading scorer (15.6 ppg) and rebounder (6.7 rpg) and played his first two seasons at South Florida before transferring ... States, who is averaging 13.8 ppg, missed the last two games with a groin injury ... 6-2 senior guard Jordan Miller is averaging 17.4 ppg over the last five games after averaging 5.4 points over the first five games ... 6-9 junior forward Brandon Sebirumbi has also warmed up over the last five games, averaging 11.0 points during that span after averaging 5.0 points over the first five games ... the Paladins have a balanced 3-point attack with five players (Saaka, States, Miller, 6-1 senior guard Darryl Evans and Dehm) making at least 10 3-pointers and none more than 18 ... nine Furman players have played at least 111 minutes and none more than 283 (Saaka) out of a maximum 365 ... Saaka, States and Miller are each at or better than 80% from the free-throw line this season ... States, Saaka, Sebirumbi, Evans and Miller started five straight games together before the injury to States, for whom 6-9 sophomore forward Colin Reddick has stepped in ... Reddick's twin brother Charlie is a teammate ... 12 of the 16 players on the roster are juniors (seven) or seniors (five) ... Furman was picked fifth in the six-team South Division of the SoCon, with Saaka as one of 10 on the preseason all-league team ... Furman's last game against an Ivy school was on Nov. 21, 2009 against Dartmouth, an 83-60 win ... Clint Dempsey of the U.S. men's national soccer team, which is coached by Princeton alum Bob Bradley '80, played soccer at Furman from 2001-03 ... Furman made all six of its NCAA Tournament appearances between 1971 and '80.
On UCF: At 11-0, the Golden Knights are off to their best start since 1979-80, when they started 15-0 ... UCF, which opened in 1963 and first fielded a varsity team in 1969-70, began playing a predominantly Division I schedule in 1984-85 ... the Knights have played several Ivy teams in their history, including Brown, Columbia, Penn and Yale, with the most recent game an 81-64 win over Penn in the same tournament two years ago ... 6-8 sophomore forward Keith Clanton is the team's leading scorer (16.4 ppg) and rebounder (8.7 ppg) ... Clanton has 23% of the team's rebounds this season ... 6-3 sophomore guard Marcus Jordan is second on the team in scoring at 15.2 ppg and missed the first half of the Dec. 22 game at Massachusetts with an ankle injury suffered late in the Miami (Fla.) game on Dec. 18 ... Jordan is the son of former NBA great and current Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan and brother of Jeff Jordan, who is sitting out this season after transferring from Illinois ... entering Dec. 24, UCF led C-USA in scoring defense (56.5 ppg), in scoring margin (+21.9 ppg), in field goal percentage (50.7%), in FG% defense (35.8%), in 3-point FG% (39.1%), in blocks (7.2 bpg), and in defensive rebounds (28.3 per game) ... 7-0 redshirt senior Tom Herzog, a Michigan State transfer, led C-USA in blocks at 3.0 per game and Clanton is second at 1.9 ... Princeton will play against a team featuring another son of a player from Jordan's Chicago Bulls teams when the Tigers face Penn, for which freshman Marin Kukoc (son of Toni Kukoc) plays, though Kukoc has not yet seen action ... the Knights started Clanton, Jordan, 5-9 junior guard A.J. Rompza, 6-8 junior forward/center Dwight McCombs, and 6-6 redshirt sophomore forward David Diakite for seven straight games before 6-3 junior guard Isaac Sosa started the UMass game after Jordan's injury ... Marcus Jordan, McCombs and Rompza were all teammates at Chicago's Whitney Young High School ... head coach Donnie Jones is in his first season at UCF after spending three years as the head coach at Marshall and 11 seasons before that as an assistant coach at Florida ... both Jones and Sydney Johnson (Georgetown) were assistant coaches in the 2007 Final Four, and the two faced off in Johnson's first season with Jones getting a 66-60 win for Marshall on Dec. 22, 2007 ... UCF made all four of its NCAA Tournament appearances between 1994 and 2005.
