Saint Joseph's is making its first visit to Jadwin Gym since Dec. 18, 1995, when the Tigers won the back end of a home-and-home series 88-78. Princeton lost a year earlier in Philadelphia 58-38. Those two meetings were Sydney Johnson's only games against Saint Joseph's as a player. As a coach, whether assistant or head, last season's win is his only meeting with the Hawks.
The last time Saint Joseph's played in Jadwin, Steve Goodrich '98 led the Tigers with 22 points, and the other three Princeton players in double figures now make their living courtside. Mitch Henderson '98, now an assistant coach at Northwestern under then-Princeton coach Bill Carmody, had 17 points, while Sydney Johnson '97 and Brian Earl '99 had 16 apiece.
Sydney Johnson's teams as a player split a home-and-home series with Saint Joseph's in 1994 and 1995, first in Philadelphia, with each team winning on its home floor. The Tigers will try to sweep this home-and-home series 15 years later after winning in Philadelphia on Jan. 2, 2010, 70-62.
Princeton returns 47 of 70 points from last season's meeting after graduating Pawel Buczak (14), Marcus Schroeder (five) and Zach Finley (four). Douglas Davis had a team-high and co-game-high 17, while Dan Mavraides added 16 and Ian Hummer had 10. Saint Joseph's returns 31 of 62, including leading scorer Carl Jones (17) but not Darrin Govens (13). The Tigers outshot Saint Joseph's 47.1% to 37.3% and outrebounded the Hawks 41-32 in the last meeting.
Princeton led by as much as 14 at 39-25 less than two minutes into the first half on Jan. 2, 2010 at Saint Joseph's, but the Hawks went on a 12-2 run over less than five minutes to make it a two-point game. Princeton again led by 11 points with 63 seconds to go, but the Hawks went on a 12-3 run in the space of 49 seconds to make it a two-point game at 64-62. The Tigers were able to settle things over the final 24 seconds and win by eight, going 6 for 6 from the free-throw line while the Hawks went 0 for 2 from the line and 0 for 2 from the field in that span.
Under Sydney Johnson, Princeton holds a 3-3 record against Atlantic 10 teams: Fordham (1-0), St. Bonaventure (0-1), George Washington (0-1), Duquesne (1-0), Saint Joseph's (1-0), Saint Louis (0-1). The Duquesne game, in the first round of last season's CBI tournament, was the only one of those to take place in Jadwin Gym.
This year's Princeton team is the first since the 1971-72 team to score 500 points in seven games, scoring 503. The Tigers will maintain that title through eight games as long as they score 23 points against the Hawks, as the 1974-75 Tigers scored 525 through eight. The '71-'72 team scored 668 through eight games.
The '71-'72 team was the last Tiger team to start the season with as many as seven games scoring at least 60 points, as these Tigers have done. That team started the season with 14 straight games with at least 60 points and missed meeting that mark in every game by a single point in a single game, as Penn held Princeton to 59 in the 15th game of the season.
Princeton has scored at least 60 points in seven straight games for the first time in a single season since February 1998. The last time Princeton had an eight-game string of 60-point games in a single season was Feb./Mar. 1997 in the last nine regular-season games of Sydney Johnson's collegiate career.
Against Siena (86) and Lafayette (82), Princeton reached 80 points in back-to-back games against Division I opponents for the first time since the 1975 NIT (84 vs. Holy Cross, 86 vs. South Carolina), which the Tigers won.
In games Princeton has won, Dan Mavraides is averaging a team-best 19.5 points per game. In losses, he is averaging 8.7 points. Both Ian Hummer and Douglas Davis are averaging double figures in wins and losses.
Princeton shot .612 in the win over Lafayette, the highest shooting percentage of the Sydney Johnson era (fourth season). It is the best shooting clip for the Tigers in a game since Feb. 25, 2006 vs. Harvard (.625).
The shooting percentage disparity in the Lafayette game (.612 for Princeton, .400 for Lafayette) was the largest in favor of Princeton in a game since Mar. 4, 2005 against Harvard, when Princeton shot 70.3% and Harvard shot 32.6%.
The 3-point shooting percentage disparity (.529 for Princeton, .273 for Lafayette) was not as unique for the Tigers, since Princeton shot 44.4% and held Bucknell to 14.3% just on Nov. 23.
When Lafayette shot .273 from beyond the arc, it was the third time this season, all in the last four games, that Tiger foes have shot lower than 30% from 3-point range this season (Siena .250, Bucknell .143).
Princeton hasn't shot under 42.4% from the field this season, the percentage it hit against Presbyterian on Nov. 24. The Tigers have shot 40% in 11 straight games dating back to last season, its longest streak since a 14-gamer bridging the '05-'06 and '06-'07 seasons.
Princeton's 21 assists against Lafayette, on 30 field goals, are its most since it had 25 against Yale on Feb. 19, 2010 on 31 baskets.
Princeton has won seven of the last 10 games against Saint Joseph's after losing the first three.
Over the last three games, Ian Hummer is shooting .667 from the field, including a 10-for-13 (.769) performance against Presbyterian and a 10-for-12 (.833) game last time out at Lafayette. Hummer is averaging an even 20 points per game over that span, scoring 24 against Presbyterian and 22 at Lafayette for the first two 20-point games of his career. In the first four games this season, Ian Hummer was 9 for 21 (.429) from the free-throw line. Over the last three games, Hummer made 12 of 16 (.750) from the stripe.
Three of Princeton's last nine games have gone to overtime, including both games at Jadwin Gym this season. The Tigers won all three, defeating IUPUI in Indiana in the CBI quarterfinal as well as wins over Rutgers and Siena at Jadwin this season.
Three of the 13 games in the history with Saint Joseph's have gone to overtime, with Saint Joseph's winning the first two.
Princeton's 86-77 overtime win over Siena on Nov. 28 was its first against a top-100 team in the Pomeroy Index, according to KenPom.com, since Mar. 7, 2006, when the Tigers beat Penn, then a No. 97 in the Pomeroy Index, 60-59 in overtime at Jadwin Gym. Siena is at 96 in the Pomeroy Index, while Princeton is at 127 through games of Friday, Dec. 3.
Princeton's slow starts in the last four seasons, by wins and losses, have not had a correlation to the end of the season, as the Tigers have won six, then 13, then 22 games under Johnson. In 2006-07, Princeton started 9-4 in non-conference play before going 2-12 in Ivy play.
Six of Princeton's last seven regular-season losses have come by a total of 14 points. Aside from the Duke game, the deficits were one (James Madison), two (Maine, Presbyterian) and three (Cornell twice, Brown) points.
Princeton is 2-0 this season when it holds opponents under 40% shooting, as it did against Bucknell and Siena.
Princeton has won the turnover statistic in three straight games. Those games were the first time this season Princeton has won the turnover statistic.
Princeton has been outrebounded in each of the last two games, the only games this season in which Princeton has been outrebounded. Even so, the Tigers have managed to win five of the last six games they've been outrebounded, dating back to last season.
Princeton is 4-0 this season when it shoots at least 70% from the free-throw line, as it did against Rutgers, Bucknell, Siena and Lafayette.
The Tigers are 3-1 when leading at the half and 1-2 when trailing. Princeton was down to Siena by four at the half and won in OT.
Princeton has used two starting lineups this season. Ian Hummer, Douglas Davis, Dan Mavraides and Brendan Connolly have started all seven games, while Patrick Saunders has started in place of Kareem Maddox the last four games.
Entering a busy Saturday in Ivy League play on Dec. 4, with every team but Princeton and Dartmouth in action, the Tigers are No. 1 in the Ivy in field goal percentage at 47.3%, in 3-point FG% at 39.8%, in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.1, in defensive rebounds at 25.3 and in defensive rebound percentage at 70.5%. Individually, Princeton does not have a league leader, though Ian Hummer (62.5%) is second to Harvard's Keith Wright in FG% (71.7%), and Dan Mavraides and Douglas Davis are tied for second at 2.7 threes per game behind Yale's Austin Morgan (3.0).
A Tiger overview entering 2010-11...
•The Tigers are
coming off a 22-9 season that saw their most wins since 1999, their
first postseason appearance (CBI semifinals) since 2004, and their first
postseason win since 1999.
•Princeton was tabbed as the Ivy favorite in the league's media poll for the first time since 2004-05, getting 12 of 17 first-place votes. Harvard (four first-place votes), Cornell (one), Penn, Yale, Brown, Columbia and Dartmouth rounded out the poll.
•Princeton returns its top five scorers for the second straight year. This year, the list includes (2009-10 ppg) Douglas Davis (12.7), Dan Mavraides (11.5), Ian Hummer (6.9), Kareem Maddox (6.2) and Patrick Saunders (5.1). The Tigers also return their top two rebounders in Mavraides (4.3 rpg in 2009-10) and Maddox (3.5) but lose their top two assist-makers, Marcus Schroeder '10 (90 assists in 2009-10) and Pawel Buczak '10 (52).
•The Tigers were the top defensive team in the nation by points per game allowed last season at 53.3 ppg.
•Under Sydney Johnson, Princeton has improved from a 6-23 record in 2007-08, Johnson's first year, to 22-9 last year. The 14-win improvement is the largest in program history for a period of two or fewer years.
•Princeton
outrebounded its opponents in 2009-10 for the first time in a season
since 2003-04. The margin last year was 30.6 to 29.5 rpg, while the
margin in '04 was 30.6 to 27.8 rpg.
•From 2007-08, Johnson's first
year, to 2009-10, several key statistics improved for Princeton,
including field goal percentage (42.5 to 44.1), FG percentage defense
(46.8 to 39.8), three-point FG percentage (32.9 to 35.9) and free throw
percentage (69.8 to 71.8).
•Last season was the first time since 2005-06 that the Tigers had more steals and fewer turnovers than their opponents.
•Princeton
will try to fill the contributions of four graduated seniors, Marcus
Schroeder, Pawel Buczak, Zach Finley and Nick Lake. Among the tangibles,
Finley and Buczak were two of four Tigers last year to stand 6-9 or
taller, and Schroeder was a do-everything point guard. His 52 steals led
the team, as did his 90 assists. Schroeder was one of four Tigers to
grab 100 rebounds and one of two to shoot better than 80% of the line
with at least 30 attempts.
•If their 2009-10 scoring totals are
replicated, Douglas Davis '12 and Dan Mavraides '11 will become the 27th
and 28th members of Princeton's 1,000-point club. Through seven games this season, Davis is at 832,
while Mavraides is at 751. They would become the first members of that
club since Judson Wallace '05 and Will Venable '05 reached it one month
apart in 2005.
•Since freshman eligibility began in the program
for the 1978-79 season, only Kit Mueller '91 has reached 1,000 points
before his senior year, a feat Davis would match at his current pace.
The only other players to reach 1,000 before their senior seasons in
program history are Brian Taylor '84 and Bill Bradley '65, who did so
using only their sophomore and junior seasons. Taylor entered with the
Class of 1973.
•Named head coach on April 20, 2007, Sydney Johnson
(fourth season) is already the third-longest tenured active coach in
the Ivy League, one week short of Harvard's Tommy Amaker. Yale's James
Jones is the Ivy dean, having been hired April 27, 1999.
•Johnson
is in line to coach his 100th game at Princeton on Dec. 29 against
Northeastern at the Central Florida tournament. He would become the
eighth coach in Princeton history to do so, following Frederick
Leuhring, Albert Wittmer, Cappy Cappon, Butch van Breda Kolff, Pete
Carril, Bill Carmody and John Thompson III.
•Princeton will have a program-record seven games in the month of November, topping the previous high of five.
Princeton's "MARV" patches are in honor of Marvin Bressler, the late professor who came to Princeton in 1963 and began serving in an informal advisor role with the team. He was an inspiration to create the Academic-Athletic Fellows program that serves all Princeton teams. Bressler was an Academic-Athletic Fellow for men's basketball through the 2009-10 season before he passed away on July 7 at age 87.
On Saint Joseph's: The Hawks will be looking to break a two-game losing streak, both to City Six teams in Drexel and Villanova, when they visit Princeton ... both teams have defeated Rutgers this season, and both have yet to face Penn ... Saint Joseph's will face Siena, Princeton's opponent last Sunday, on Dec. 31 ... since allowing 11 of 21 3-point field goals against Western Kentucky to start the season, the Hawks have allowed opponents to make only 26 of 111 (23.4%) from beyond the arc ... in their three wins, the Hawks benefited from opponents shooting 55.3% (26 of 47) from the free-throw line ... Saint Joseph's was 11-20 overall and 5-11 in the Atlantic 10 last season and lost its top two scorers from '09-'10 heading into this season, Darrin Govens (13.9 ppg) and Garrett Williamson (12.1) ... Williamson was the team's only postseason all-league pick in 2010, part of the league's all-defensive team ... the Hawks are 0-4 when getting outrebounded this season and 3-0 when winning on the glass ... Carl Jones, a 5-11 sophomore guard, leads the team in scoring at 16.6 ppg as one of three players in double figures ... Langston Galloway, a 6-2 freshman guard, is the second-leading scorer (11.9 ppg) and leading rebounder (5.7 rpg) ... the lineup of Jones, Galloway, Hilliard, C.J. Aiken and Daryus Quarles has started every game except for Penn State, when Charoy Bentley started for Jones ... Jones has scored in double figures in every game this season ... Hilliard is 56.4% (31 of 55) from the field this season ... Phil Martelli is in his 16th season as the team's head coach, with the last Saint Joseph's visit to Jadwin Gym coming in his first season ... the team was last in the NCAA Tournament in 2008, its only tournament appearance since the memorable Elite Eight run in 2004 ... 2004 was also the last year Princeton made the NCAA Tournament ... the Tigers have already faced two Martelli proteges this season, defeating former Saint Joseph's assistant Mike Rice against Rutgers in the opener and losing by a point to another former Hawk assistant, Matt Brady at James Madison.
