Men's Basketball Awards Postseason Honors at Banquet
April 22, 2010 | Men's Basketball
PRINCETON -- Kareem Maddox, Dan Mavraides, Marcus Schroeder, Nick Lake and Douglas Davis were among the individual honorees as the Princeton men's basketball team saluted its 2009-10 season April 14 in Jadwin Gym.
The evening saw coaches, award winners and the four-member senior class reflect on a campaign that ended with the team's first postseason berth since 2004 and its most wins, at 22-9, in more than a decade.
Junior Kareem Maddox was selected as the Class of 1959 Bob Rock Sixth Man Award, which recognizes a player's relentless work ethic and positive attitude. Maddox was a regular off the bench for the Tigers, playing in 30 of the team's 31 games, leading the Tigers in blocked shots with 27, finishing second on the team in rebounding at 3.5 per game and fourth in scoring at 6.2 per game. Maddox came on strong later in the season, achieving seven double-digit scoring games over the team's last 15 contests and racking up the team's first double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds at Columbia Feb. 27.
The B.F. Bunn Trophy, which recognizes the player with the greatest contribution to the team through sportsmanship, play and influence, was shared by junior Mavraides and senior Schroeder. Mavraides, who was also honored for his second-team All-Ivy League selection, placed second on the team in scoring at 11.5 points per game, reaching double-digit totals in 19 games, while leading the club in rebounds at 4.3 per contest. Mavraides was also second on the team in steals, with 36, while his 44 assists were third on the team. Schroeder, a co-captain, finished in the top five in program history in career steals and assists, leading this season's team in each category with 90 helpers and 52 takeaways.
Co-captain Lake earned the Paul Friedman Award, which recognizes extraordinary dedication to the team. Lake played in 17 games, starting five, while exemplifying on-court and off-court leadership for a team that grew from six wins in 2007-08 to 13 last season and 22 this season to enjoy its first winning campaign since 2005.
Mavraides and Davis were recognized for their second-team All-Ivy League selections. Davis led the team at 12.7 points per game and his 395 points overall were the most for any Tiger in six years. Davis had 19 double-digit scoring games and reached the 20-point mark six times.
The team and staff dedicated the 2010 banquet to two strong supporters of the program, academic-athletic fellow Marvin Bressler and Jadwin Gym facilities staffer George Boccanfuso.
