First season as a starter ... both 10-point games in his career have come recently, Dec. 17 at Wagner and Jan. 5 vs. Marist.
Princeton will try to begin the Ivy League season at 2-0 for the fourth time in as many seasons under Sydney Johnson when Brown and Yale visit Jadwin Gym this weekend. Princeton started 2-0 in Johnson's first year, 2007-08, then 4-0 two years ago and 5-0 last season. During Johnson's playing career, Princeton started 2-0 his freshman season of 1994 and his senior season of 1997.
The Tigers won't have to look far for memories of a significant game against Brown. With Princeton still very much in the Ivy League race, the Bears dealt the Tigers a 57-54 defeat at Jadwin on Feb. 20, 2010. Coming before another three-point loss at Cornell the following Friday, those two games were the only back-to-back Ivy losses Princeton has had since Mar. 6-7, 2009 on the trip to New York State.
Brown was hot from the field in the Feb. 20, 2010 game at Jadwin, hitting 57.6% (19 of 33) to Princeton's 41.5% (22 of 53). It was, and still is, the highest percentage Princeton has allowed an opponent since Harvard shot 58.5% (24 of 41) in a 77-71 Tiger win on Jan. 31, 2009 in Cambridge.
Three-pointers and free throws were also key statistics in the Feb. 20, 2010 game against Brown. Princeton wsa 6 of 25 (24.0%) from three-point range, while Brown stayed mostly inside the arc, going 1 of 4 (25.0%). Brown capitalized on its free throws while Princeton took relatively few, the Bears making 18 of 19 (94.7%) while Princeton made 4 of 7 (57.1%).
Each team lost its leading scorer from the Feb. 20, 2010 game against Brown to graduation. Marcus Schroeder '10 had 17 points, while Matt Mullery had 15 for Brown. The Bears return Peter Sullivan (13 points) and Tucker Halpern (12), while no other Tiger scored in double figures. Kareem Maddox was the closest, chipping in nine points.
A night before the loss to Brown, Princeton seemingly couldn't miss against Yale on Feb. 19, 2010 at Jadwin Gym in an ESPNU-televised contest. Scoring 82 points, a season-best against a Division I opponent last season, Princeton canned 13 of 19 (68.4%) from beyond the arc and Yale led only after the first bucket in an 82-58 contest.
The Bulldogs shot 46.0% (23 of 50) in the Feb. 19, 2010 game, but were done in by rebounding in addition to Princeton's hot shooting. The Tigers outrebounded Yale 39-25 with no Princeton player grabbing more than six boards. All five players who scored double figures return for this season, with Yale's Greg Mangano scoring 11 and Dan Mavraides leading Princeton with 20 points. Patrick Saunders (14), Douglas Davis (12) and Kareem Maddox (10) were also in double figures.
Princeton swept the Brown-Yale road trip last season, winning 63-46 on Jan. 29, 2010 in Providence and 58-45 on Jan. 30, 2010 in New Haven. Matt Mullery led Brown in that contest as well, scoring 10 points, while Douglas Davis had 16 and Ian Hummer added 10 for Princeton. Davis also led Princeton at Yale, scoring 13 points, while Michael Sands (14) and Alex Zampier (13) now both graduated, led Yale.
The Tigers will look to keep some positive trends going this weekend, as Princeton is 12-4 for the first time since the 1998-99 season and is 5-0 at home for the first time since 2000. The '98-'99 team went 16-4 before suffering its fifth loss, 60-58 in double overtime at Yale, while the 2000 team started 7-0 at home before losing to Penn.
Last time out, the Tigers started slowly but picked up steam in their annual post-finals game against a non-Division I team, defeating The College of New Jersey 73-40. Kareem Maddox had a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds, along with three blocks, in 22 minutes, while 11 Tigers scored and all 15 available players entered the game.
The 40 points Princeton allowed to TCNJ were the lowest amount any Ivy team has allowed to an opponent this season. Harvard's 49 points allowed to Holy Cross is the next lowest. The Tigers, against TCNJ, became the only Ivy team this season to hold an opponent without a made 3-pointer.
Princeton will try to warm up from beyond the arc as Ivy League play begins. The Tigers' two lowest shooting percentages of the season from 3-point range have come in the last two games after Princeton went 3 of 18 (16.7%) against Marist and 6 of 24 (25.0%) against TCNJ. Recent history indicates the Tigers will turn it around, as the last time Princeton was below 30% from distance in three straight games was Dec. 13-30, 2009, against UNC Greensboro, Monmouth and Wagner, all wins.
Princeton has tallied 24 steals over the last three games (10 vs. UCF, six vs. Marist, eight vs. TCNJ), the team's highest three-game total this season.
Princeton held TCNJ without a 3-pointer on five attempts last time out, the Tigers' first time blanking an opponent from beyond the arc since Monmouth went 0 for 11 on Dec. 16, 2009.
With the TCNJ win, Princeton coach Sydney Johnson climbed to three games above .500 for the first time in his head coaching stint with the Tigers, now at 53-50. Since the beginning of calendar year 2009, Johnson's record is 45-19.Following a 2-4 start to the 2009-10 season, Princeton has won 32 of its last 41 games. Following a 2-3 start to this season, with two of those losses coming by a combined three points, Princeton has won 10 of its last 11 games.
Princeton has held opponents to fewer than 10 assists in four of the last six games after not doing so in any of the first 10 games.
In the 14 games since the Duke contest, Princeton has trailed by double digits only once, against Bucknell, by 11 points and for less than a minute. The Tigers came back to win that game, making it the largest deficit rallied from in a Princeton win this season.
Princeton's 1,135 points through 16 games are the 12th most through 16 games in program history. The first 11 times all came between 1956 and 1972.
Princeton's streak of scoring 60 points in the season's first 16 games is the second-longest in program history to start a season after the 1962-63 Tigers, who scored 60 in all 25 of their games.
Princeton is also on an 18-game streak of scoring 60+ including the last two games of last season. It is the longest two-season streak since the '70-'71 and '71-'72 teams reached 60+ in 23 straight games. The longest streak in program history belongs to the '61-'62 and '62-'63 teams at 32 games.
The Tigers have played three overtime games in a season for the 15th time in program history. The program record for OT games in a season is five, set in 1980-81. The last time Princeton played four OT games in a season was in 1998-99. The three OT victories tie a program record, set in 1956-57 and matched in 2003-04 and 2005-06.
Kareem Maddox's 31 points on Dec. 12 at Tulsa, coming four games after he scored 30 points against Siena, made him the first Tiger since Kevin Mullin '84 with two 30-point games in a season and only the second player since Brian Taylor '84 (entered with the Class of 1973) did so six times in the 1971-72 season. If Maddox can reach 30 again this season, he would be just the fourth player in program history, after Bill Bradley '65, Geoff Petrie '70 and Taylor, to have at least three 30-point games in a single season.
Kareem Maddox is also the only Ivy League player this season with two 30-point games. Penn's Zack Rosen is the only other Ivy player with one, hitting 30 at Delaware on Dec. 22.
Even though Kareem Maddox leads the Ivy League with a .586 field goal percentage, he falls just short of being able to qualify for the NCAA minimum of five field goals made per game, now standing at 4.7. If Maddox were included, his percentage would have been ranked 17th in the country through last weekend's games. Maddox would need to make 15 field goals over the two games this weekend to qualify for the next NCAA statistical release.
Kareem Maddox and Ian Hummer are two of seven Ivy Leaguers to have at least two double-doubles this season. Princeton and Brown (Tucker Halpern, two; Dockery Walker, two) are the only schools with more than one such player. Only three players have more than two double-doubles: Yale's Greg Mangano (seven), Harvard's Keith Wright (six) and Penn's Jack Eggleston (three).
Princeton has had five players scoring in double-figures in four games this season, against Marist, Towson, Monmouth and Saint Joseph's. It is the first time Princeton has had five players reach double figures in as many as four games since the 1973-74 season. The 1971-72 season was the last time Princeton had five such games. The 1967-68 team holds the record with nine such games.
Princeton has had as many as six players reach double figures in a game three times, in 1956, 1967 and 2000. The 2000 game, coming Mar. 4 against Brown, is the only time in program history Princeton had seven players in double figures.
Princeton hasn't shot under 42.4% from the field in a game this season, the percentage it hit against Presbyterian on Nov. 24. The Tigers have shot 40% in 20 straight games dating back to last season, its longest streak since a 29-gamer bridging the 1988-89 and 1989-90 seasons.
Seven of Princeton's last eight regular-season losses have come by a total of 20 points. Aside from the Duke game, the deficits were one (James Madison), two (Maine, Presbyterian), three (Cornell twice, Brown) and six (UCF) points.
Princeton is 6-0 this season when it holds opponents under 40% shooting, as it did against Bucknell, Siena, Tulsa, Wagner, Marist and TCNJ.
The Tigers are 10-2 when leading at the half and 2-2 when trailing. Princeton was down to Siena by four at the half and to Tulsa by one before winning both in OT. The Tigers were up 13 on James Madison at the break before losing by one and up eight on UCF before losing by six.
Princeton has used two starting lineups this season. Ian Hummer, Douglas Davis, Dan Mavraides and Brendan Connolly have started all 16 games, while Patrick Saunders has started in place of Kareem Maddox the last 13 games.
Entering this weekend's games, Princeton is leading the Ivy League in field goal percentage at 47.2%, ahead of Harvard's 45.5%, and in 3-point FG% at 36.6%, ahead of Cornell's 36.5%. Kareem Maddox is Princeton's only individual statistical leader, with his .5859 FG% edging out the .5855 of Harvard's Keith Wright.
Other than its .750 winning percentage ranking 40th in the country, Princeton's top NCAA team ranking is 47th in field goal percentage (47.2%). Princeton's top individual ranking is 29th, with Ian Hummer's .568 FG%.
Princeton has the chance to celebrate two 1,000-point scorers this season, with Douglas Davis at 938 points and Dan Mavraides at 863. Princeton last had a 1,000-point scorer in 2005, when Judson Wallace '05 and Will Venable '05 reached it a month apart.
Since freshman eligibility began in the program
for the 1978-79 season, only Kit Mueller '91 has reached 1,000 points
before his senior year, a feat Davis would match at his current pace.
The only other players to reach 1,000 before their senior seasons in
program history are Brian Taylor '84 and Bill Bradley '65, who did so
using only their sophomore and junior seasons. Taylor entered with the
Class of 1973.
Named head coach on April 20, 2007, Sydney Johnson
(fourth season) is already the third-longest tenured active coach in
the Ivy League, one week short of Harvard's Tommy Amaker. Yale's James
Jones is the Ivy dean, having been hired April 27, 1999. At 103 games, Johnson has coached the eighth-most games in Princeton history, with John Thompson III '88 next on the list at 110 games coached.
Princeton is tied with Indiana, and behind North Carolina (seven), for the second-most active Division I head coaches produced. The Tigers' five, all disciples of Pete Carril, are Sydney Johnson '97 (Princeton), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond), John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver) and Craig Robinson '83 (Oregon State).
Princeton's "MARV" patches are in honor of Marvin Bressler, the late professor who came to Princeton in 1963 and began serving in an informal advisor role with the team. He was an inspiration to create the Academic-Athletic Fellows program that serves all Princeton teams. Bressler was an Academic-Athletic Fellow for men's basketball through the 2009-10 season before he passed away on July 7 at age 87.
On Brown: Brown was picked sixth in the Ivy preseason poll ... Brown is eighth in the Ivy in 3-point field goal percentage (.324), in turnover margin (-2.38) and in offensive rebound percentage (.254) but is first in defensive rebounds at 26.8 per game ... Peter Sullivan has three of the Ivy's top six single-game free-throw totals this season, including the best in the Ivy at 13 and two more 12-free throw games ... Sullivan made every free throw in all three of those performances, against Maine, Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac ... Brown has the top two single-game 3-point attempt totals, putting up 35 against Bryant and 34 against Fordham ... Brown also has the top two single-game rebounding totals in the Ivy with 58 against Lyndon State and 54 last time out against Yale ... Peter Sullivan is the team's leading scorer at 13.6 points per game, one of three players averaging double figures along with Tucker Halpern (11.2) and Garrett Leffelman (10.6) ... six players have double-digit 3-point makes this season compared to three for Princeton, but the Tigers have only made four fewer threes in the same number of games ... Tucker Halpern had double-digit points in each of the first five games, then just two of the next eight games, and then again in each of the last three contests including tying a career high with 26 points on Jan. 17 against Quinnipiac, the same team against which he scored 26 last season ... after reaching double digits in points in five straight games, Garrett Leffelman was 0 for 11 from the field last time out against Yale but tied a season best with seven rebounds ... Peter Sullivan has gone 7 of 30 from the field over the last three games after shooting 50% or better from the field in six games this season ... Brown coach Jesse Agel is in his third season as the head coach in Providence after taking over for Princeton alum Craig Robinson '83, who took the head coaching position at Oregon State ... Agel was an assistant coach at alma mater Vermont for 17 years and then at Brown for two ... Brown is the last Ivy League team other than Princeton, Penn or Cornell to make the NCAA Tournament, in 1986.
On Yale: Yale was picked sixth in the Ivy preseason poll but has won its first two Ivy League games by sweeping Brown ... the Bulldogs are No. 1 in the Ivy in field goal percentage defense at .407 but eighth in the Ivy in steals at 5.0 per game ... Greg Mangano is the No. 1 rebounder in the Ivy League by two boards a game at 10.3, in defensive rebounds by one a game at 7.9 per game, and in blocks by one per game at 2.7 ... Mangano is the Bulldogs' rebounding leader (10.3 rpg) by six boards a game over rookie Jeremiah Kreisberg (4.3) ... Mangano is the team's leading scorer at 14.8 ppg, ahead of Austin Morgan (13.2) and Porter Braswell (10.1) ... Mangano is on a streak of four straight double-doubles ... Yale coach James Jones is the Ivy's current longest-tenured coach, now in his 12th season.
