So far this season:
Princeton was
able to improve in a key statistic from its opener as the Tigers cut
their turnovers from 28 against Wagner to 11 at N.C. State. Just two of
the turnovers against N.C. State came in the second half.
Princeton also cut its offensive rebounds allowed by a few, from 15 against Wagner to 12 at N.C. State, but the Wolfpack dominated the glass 40-24. The offensive rebounds stat helped Wagner get 11 second-chance points to Princeton's five, and helped N.C. State win second-chance points 15-5. Last season, the Tigers were 13-1 when allowing double-digit offensive rebounds.
The Tigers are
hot from 3-point range this season, making 16 of 32 for an Ivy-best .500
clip. Yale is the next-best team at .400
(28 of 70).
Princeton has two of the top four scorers in
the Ivy League in Ian Hummer (17.0 ppg) and Douglas Davis (16.5 ppg).
Zack Rosen of Penn (24.0 ppg) and Reggie Willhite of Yale (19.5 ppg)
were first and second in the league.
Free throws are an area in which the Tigers will look to improve following their first two games. Princeton is 17 for 31 on the season from the stripe, an Ivy-low .548 clip. Princeton ended fifth in the Ivy (.732) in that statistic last season.
Princeton has seen double-digit scoring from Ian Hummer and Douglas Davis in each of its first two games, but no other Tiger has scored more than seven points. A season ago, the Tigers had seven players who reached double-digit points in at least one game during the season, and five of those players return: Davis, Hummer, Patrick Saunders, Brendan Connolly and Mack Darrow.
The Tigers will also aim to improve on balancing out their field goal percentage with their opponents. Princeton is shooting 42.7 percent (41-96) from the field overall, while their foes are hitting at a 47 percent clip (54-115). Taking out the 3-point advantage Princeton has held (50 percent to 31.6 percent), the difference is even more pronounced. Princeton has made 39.1 percent (25-64) of its 2-point shots and allowed 50 percent (48-96) of its opponents' 2-pointers.
Ten Tigers have played in both of the team's games this season and nine of them are returning players. Denton Koon (5.0 mpg, 1.5 ppg) is the only freshman to have played as of yet.
Against Buffalo:
Princeton will be facing a MAC team for the third time in four years when the Buffalo Bulls come to town Saturday. The Tigers had a home-and-home against Central Michigan in 2008 and 2009 for the team's first game against a MAC program since 2002 (W. Michigan).
Buffalo will be making the third-ever visit by a MAC team to Jadwin Gym. Princeton defeated Bowling Green at home in 1985 and lost to Central Michigan in 2008 in a game better remembered for Douglas Davis's 25-point collegiate debut.
Princeton is 7-5 all-time against MAC schools and has won three of the last four meetings including against Ball State in 2000, Western Michigan in 2002 and Central Michigan in 2009.
For the second time in
three games (Wagner), Princeton's game will match two coaches who are at
the only NCAA head coaching jobs they have held. Buffalo's Reggie
Witherspoon has been at his post since 1999.
Milestones:
With Dan Mavraides '11
and current senior Douglas Davis a year ago, Princeton saw its first
1,000-point scorers since Judson Wallace '05 and Will Venable '05 in
2005. Ian Hummer is on pace to join that list this season, standing 311
points away. Hummer scored 441 points last season and would be the only
the second junior (Davis) to reach 1,000 at Princeton since Kit Mueller
'91.
Hummer is also set
to pass his father, Ed Hummer '67, in scoring this season. Ed Hummer
scored 786 points in his three-season Princeton career, and Ian Hummer
stands at 689. His uncle, John Hummer '70, scored 1,031 points in his
three seasons.
Douglas Davis
is in 12th place on the Princeton career scoring list at 1,143. Davis
has a big gap before 11th place, held by a teammate of two of his
coaches, Steve Goodrich '98 (1,207). Davis is already the highest
scoring player at Princeton since Gabe Lewullis '99 and Brian Earl '99 finished their careers
with 1,277 and 1,428 points, respectively.
Davis is aiming to become only the second Tiger, after assistant coach Brian Earl '99, since the 3-point line came to be 25 years ago to have four seasons of at least 50 3-pointers made. Davis already has seven in two games this season.
With five 3-pointers last time out at N.C. State, Davis became the fourth Tiger in the 3-point era to can 200 from distance. Only Gabe Lewullis '99 (212), Sean Jackson '92 (235) and Brian Earl '99 (281) are ahead of him on that list. Davis is the 19th player in Ivy League history with 200 career 3-pointers.
Entering the season:
Princeton is coming off its 26th Ivy League championship (55 seasons) and 24th NCAA Tournament appearance (all since 1952), both Ivy League record totals.
Height
dominates the Tiger roster this season, as the average height is
6-foot-7. Nine of the 17 players are 6-foot-8 or taller. No other Ivy
League team has more than six players at 6-foot-8 (Columbia).
Princeton's 25 wins last season tied for the second-most in program history and the most since the 1997-98 team, which included current coaches Mitch Henderson '98 and Brian Earl '99, went 27-2.
Though the Tigers are 0-2 for the first time since 2008, Princeton has been able to turn slow starts around. Last season, Princeton started 2-3 before finishing 25-7. Two years ago, a 2-4 start became 22-9. In 2008-09, 2-8 became 13-14.
Looking for his first win is Mitch Henderson '98, the team's Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach. Henderson is the 29th man to hold the job and the fourth consecutive alumnus to do so (John Thompson III '88, Joe Scott '87, Sydney Johnson '97).
Henderson, who played in three NCAA Tournaments for Princeton, spent 11 years at Northwestern under one of his former coaches at Princeton, Bill Carmody, as an assistant coach.
Princeton is second to North Carolina in alumni as active Division I head coaches. Eight Tar Heels are roaming the sidelines, while six Tigers are doing so: Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Scott '87 (Denver), Johnson '97 (Fairfield), Henderson '98 (Princeton), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Craig Robinson '83 (Oregon State).
There are 10 Ivy League alumni as current Division I head coaches, and Princeton has six. Three of the others are from Penn (Fran McCaffery, Iowa; Matt Langel, Colgate; Jerome Allen, Penn) along with Jeff Jackson from Cornell (Furman).
Princeton will be road warriors in December and January, playing 10 of 11 games in those months away from Jadwin Gym. Only three of those games are in states that do not border New Jersey (Northeastern, Florida State, Florida A&M). Being away from Jadwin has not been much of a problem for the Tigers lately, as Princeton has won 10 of its last 13 games on opponents' home floors.
Princeton is looking to make up for its largest offensive loss to graduation since the 2007-08 to 2008-09 seasons, when the Tigers did not return 57 percent of their offense. From 2008-09 to 2009-10, the loss was just six percent. From 2009-10 to 2010-11, the loss was 25 percent. Now from 2010-11 to 2011-12, the loss is 39 percent. Princeton will be looking to replace the 2011 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year forward Kareem Maddox and second-team All-Ivy honoree forward Dan Mavraides.
Princeton has increased its win total over three consecutive offseasons, in 2008 (six to 13), 2009 (13 to 22) and 2010 (22 to 25). The last time Princeton had three such offseasons was 1995-97. The last time Princeton had a longer streak was six offseasons, from 1985-90.
Princeton's 59-57 NCAA Tournament loss to Kentucky, which went on to the national semifinal, was the closest the Tigers have come to winning an NCAA Tournament game since its last victory, a 69-57 triumph over UNLV in 1998. It was the closest Princeton NCAA Tournament game, win or lose, since the 1996 win over UCLA (43-41).
Princeton has made the postseason in each of the last two years, advancing to the College Basketball Invitational semifinal in 2010 before the NCAA Tournament last season. Princeton made the postseason annually from 1996-2002 and then only once from 2003-09, in the 2004 NCAAs.
Princeton led the Ivy League last season in scoring defense (63.0 ppg), field goal percentage defense (.330), rebounding margin (+4.1 rpg) and defensive rebounding percentage (.732)
On Buffalo: The Bulls became a Division I program for the 1991-92 season and are aiming for their first NCAA Tournament appearance in D-I; the team has played in the NIT, CBI and CIT once each over the past seven seasons ... Buffalo has faced every Ivy League team except Columbia, Harvard and Princeton at least once; all but 10 of the team's 52 games against Ivy programs (17-35) have come against fellow upstater Cornell (15-27) ... Buffalo returns four of its five starters from a year ago and four of its top five scorers, led by last season's leading scorer, 6-3 senior guard Zach Filzen ... Filzen (11.0), 6-10 senior forward Mitchell Watt (15.5) and 6-7 sophomore forward Javon McCrea (18.5) are all averaging double-digit points per game this season ... Filzen, Watt, McCrea, 6-3 sophomore goard Jarod Oldham and 6-5 senior guard/forward Dave Barnett have started both games for the team this season ... Buffalo is outshooting its foes 44.2 percent (46-104) to 38.1 percent (48-126), though neither the Bulls nor their foes are hot from 3-point range as of yet as both Buffalo and its opponents are at 26 percent success in that stat ... Buffalo is tied for No. 1 in the MAC in blocked shots (through Thursday's games) at 7.0 per, with Watt accounting for 7 of the team's 14 ... Watt is the MAC leader in blocks per game so far (3.5) ... Buffalo also leads the MAC (through Thursday's games) in assists per game at 16.0, with Oldham accounting for 15 of the 32 ... Buffalo is 2-0 for the first time since 2008 and is aiming to become 3-0 for the first time since before it became a Division I program as the last 3-0 start was in 1986-87.
