So far this season:
Princeton is 1-3 with two of the three losses coming by a combined three points (60-58 at N.C. State and 56-55 vs. Elon).
Princeton's four opponents so far this season enter the weekend with a record of 14-4 as all are 4-1 or 3-1.
While the Tigers wait for a third scorer to develop behind Ian Hummer (17.5 ppg) and Douglas Davis (15.3 ppg), Princeton can remember that the player who ended up as the team's leading scorer last season, Kareem Maddox '11, averaged 5.8 points per game as Princeton endured a 2-3 start that included two defeats of one or two points.
Princeton moved the offense inside after putting up an average of 19 3-pointers in each of the first three games. Against Elon, the Tigers put up eight 3-pointers, making two.
Princeton blocked a season-high seven shots against Elon.
Neither Princeton nor its opponent has fared well from the free-throw line in any game this season. The Tigers have ranged between 51.7 percent (Elon) and 69.2 percent (Buffalo), while their opponents have been between 52.2 percent (Wagner and Elon) and 63.6 percent (N.C. State). The Tigers are eighth in the Ivy League in free throw percentage at 58.1 percent. Columbia is next at 65.4 percent.
Princeton had a season-low eight turnovers against Elon.
Princeton is No. 1 in the Ivy League this season in 3-point shooting percentage at .391, just ahead of Brown at .383.
Princeton is the only team with two of the top six scorers in the Ivy League with Ian Hummer second at 17.5 ppg (Zack Rosen, Penn, 22.8 ppg) and Douglas Davis sixth at 15.3 ppg.
Ian Hummer is the No. 1 rebounder in the Ivy League at 8.3 rpg. Hummer has had two nine-rebound games and one double-double with 12 boards against Buffalo.
Ten Tigers have played in all four of the team's games and nine of them are returning players. Denton Koon (10.0 mpg, 2.8 ppg) is the only freshman to have played as of yet.
Against the Lewisburg subregional field:
Of its three opponents in Lewisburg, Princeton has only faced Bucknell. The Tigers enjoy a 10-3 all-time advantage against the Bison and have won five in a row in the series. This will be Princeton's first visit to Sojka Pavilion, as the last two meetings in the series have come on neutral courts as part of in-season tournaments. The Tigers were last in Lewisburg in 1999.
Princeton had a home-and-home series with Bucknell during Mitch Henderson's tenure as a player. The Bison won 74-62 in overtime in Jadwin as one of only three regular-season losses in the 1996-97 season (the others were to Indiana and North Carolina). The next season, Princeton won 64-52 in Davis Gym. Henderson had eight points in the loss and 10 in the win.
Last season at James Madison, Princeton beat Bucknell 66-55. The Bison led by as much as 11 in the first half before the Tigers rallied. Douglas Davis and Dan Mavraides had 16 points apiece for Princeton while Mack Darrow added 13. Princeton returns 42 of 66 minutes Mavraides' 16 and Kareem Maddox's eight, while Bucknell returns 34 of its 55 points minus 17 from G.W. Boon and four from Darryl Shazier. Both teams also lose their leading rebounders from that game, as Maddox's eight boards paced the Tigers to a 40-28 advantage. Boon had six boards.
Both Princeton and Bucknell were in the NCAA Tournament last season as champions of the Ivy and Patriot Leagues, respectively, and lost in their first game to eventual Final Four teams. Princeton lost 59-57 to Kentucky and Bucknell lost 81-52 to eventual champion Connecticut.
Princeton has never faced Morehead State or West Alabama. Princeton has had only one game against an Ohio Valley Conference team at the time of the game. The Tigers defeated Eastern Illinois 62-45 on Dec. 9, 1994 at an Illinois-hosted tournament. Mitch Henderson had 12 points on 4 of 9 shooting as one of four Tigers in double figures that day.
Milestones:
Ian Hummer stands at 725 points for his career. He is on pace to become the third Tiger in the past year to reach 1,000 after Douglas Davis and Dan Mavraides '11. Prior to Davis and Mavraides, no Tiger had reached 1,000 since Judson Wallace '05 and Will Venable '05 in
2005. Hummer would be the only
the second junior (Davis) to reach 1,000 at Princeton since Kit Mueller
'91.
Hummer is also set
to pass his father, Ed Hummer '67, in scoring this season. Ed Hummer
scored 786 points in his three-season Princeton career, 61 more than Ian Hummer at present. His uncle, John Hummer '70, scored 1,031 points in his
three seasons.
Douglas Davis
is in 12th place on the Princeton career scoring list at 1,171. Davis
has a big gap before 11th place, held by a teammate of two of his
coaches, Steve Goodrich '98 (1,207). Davis is already the highest
scoring player at Princeton since Gabe Lewullis '99 and Brian Earl '99 finished their careers
with 1,277 and 1,428 points, respectively.
Davis is aiming to become only the second Tiger, after assistant coach Brian Earl '99, since the 3-point line came to be 25 years ago to have four seasons of at least 50 3-pointers made. Davis has 11 in four games this season.
Davis is in fourth place in Princeton history in 3-pointers made with 204. Only Gabe Lewullis '99 (212), Sean Jackson '92 (235) and Brian Earl '99 (281) are ahead of him on that list. Davis is the 19th player in Ivy League history with 200 career 3-pointers.
Entering the season:
Princeton is coming off its 26th Ivy League championship (55 seasons) and 24th NCAA Tournament appearance (all since 1952), both Ivy League record totals.
Height
dominates the Tiger roster this season, as the average height is
6-foot-7. Nine of the 17 players are 6-foot-8 or taller. No other Ivy
League team has more than six players at 6-foot-8 (Columbia).
Princeton's 25 wins last season tied for the second-most in program history and the most since the 1997-98 team, which included current coaches Mitch Henderson '98 and Brian Earl '99, went 27-2.
The Tigers have been able to turn around slow starts in recent seasons. Princeton started 2-3 last season before finishing 25-7. Two years ago, a 2-4 start became 22-9. In 2008-09, 2-8 became 13-14.
Mitch Henderson '98, the team's Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach, is the 29th man to hold the job and the fourth consecutive alumnus to do so (John Thompson III '88, Joe Scott '87, Sydney Johnson '97).
Henderson, who played in three NCAA Tournaments for Princeton, spent 11 years at Northwestern under one of his former coaches at Princeton, Bill Carmody, as an assistant coach.
Princeton is second to North Carolina in alumni as active Division I head coaches. Eight Tar Heels are roaming the sidelines, while six Tigers are doing so: Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Scott '87 (Denver), Johnson '97 (Fairfield), Henderson '98 (Princeton), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Craig Robinson '83 (Oregon State).
There are 11 Ivy League alumni as current Division I head coaches, and Princeton has six. Four of the others are from Penn (Fran McCaffery, Iowa; Matt Langel, Colgate; Andrew Toole, Robert Morris; Jerome Allen, Penn) along with Jeff Jackson from Cornell (Furman).
Princeton will be road warriors in December and January, playing 10 of 11 games in those months away from Jadwin Gym. Only three of those games are in states that do not border New Jersey (Northeastern, Florida State, Florida A&M).
Princeton is looking to make up for its largest offensive loss to graduation since the 2007-08 to 2008-09 seasons, when the Tigers did not return 57 percent of their offense. From 2008-09 to 2009-10, the loss was just six percent. From 2009-10 to 2010-11, the loss was 25 percent. Now from 2010-11 to 2011-12, the loss is 39 percent. Princeton will be looking to replace the 2011 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year forward Kareem Maddox and second-team All-Ivy honoree forward Dan Mavraides.
Princeton has increased its win total over three consecutive offseasons, in 2008 (six to 13), 2009 (13 to 22) and 2010 (22 to 25). The last time Princeton had three such offseasons was 1995-97. The last time Princeton had a longer streak was six offseasons, from 1985-90.
Princeton's 59-57 NCAA Tournament loss to Kentucky, which went on to the national semifinal, was the closest the Tigers have come to winning an NCAA Tournament game since its last victory, a 69-57 triumph over UNLV in 1998. It was the closest Princeton NCAA Tournament game, win or lose, since the 1996 win over UCLA (43-41).
Princeton has made the postseason in each of the last two years, advancing to the College Basketball Invitational semifinal in 2010 before the NCAA Tournament last season. Princeton made the postseason annually from 1996-2002 and then only once from 2003-09, in the 2004 NCAAs.
Princeton led the Ivy League last season in scoring defense (63.0 ppg), field goal percentage defense (.330), rebounding margin (+4.1 rpg) and defensive rebounding percentage (.732)
On Bucknell: The Bison are the Patriot League preseason favorite and 6-11 junior Mike Muscala, the 2011 Patriot League Player of the Year, was on the preseason All-Patriot League team ... like Princeton, Bucknell has started the same four in all four of its games: Muscala, 6-7 junior forward Joe Willman, 6-5 sophomore Cameron Ayers, 6-6 senior guard Bryan Cohen and 6-2, junior guard Bryson Johnson ... Bucknell is the best shooting team in the Patriot at .468 and the best defender in the league in terms of shooting percentage at .413 ... Bucknell leads the Patriot in rebounding margin at +3.8 per game and in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.2 per game ... Muscala is the Patriot's leading rebounder at 8.5 rpg ... Muscala leads the team in scoring at 13.3 ppg with Willman close behind at 12.5 .. the Bison are under head coach Dave Paulsen, who is in his fourth year with the program ... Bucknell has made three of the last seven NCAA Tournaments as well as in 1987 and 1989 ... Bucknell won first-round NCAA games in 2005, beating Kansas, and 2006, beating Arkansas.
On Morehead State: Eight Eagles have started at least one of the team's four games this season ... 6-1 senior guard Terrance Hill leads the team at 16.0 ppg and is the only Eagle in double figures ... 6-4 senior guard Ty Proffitt and 6-7 sophomore Drew Kelly have also started all four games ... 6-6 junior forward Milton Chavis leads the team in rebounding at 6.5 rpg ... Morehead State is 0-3 against Division I teams so far this season ... both Princeton and Morehead State were NCAA Tournament teams last season as the Eagles beat Louisville, rival of Princeton's first-round opponent, Kentucky ... Morehead State's opponents are shooting 47.7 percent, highest in the OVC, to 39.5 percent for the Eagles ... Hill has the highest 3-pointers per game average in the OVC at 3.0 made per game ... Donnie Tyndall, coaching at his alma mater like Princeton's Mitch Henderson, is in his sixth season leading the team ... Morehead State's tallest player is 6-8 freshman Jeff Drew ... Morehead State has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances and two recently, last year and in 2009 when it won the opening-round game before losing to Louisville.
On West Alabama: The school, located in Livingston, Ala., began as Livingston Female Academy in 1835 and began admitting men in 1915 ... the school changed from Livingston University to the University of West Alabama in 1995 ... UWA, also the Tigers, is 0-1 this season against Division I teams, losing 93-60 against another Princeton alum, Craig Robinson '83 and Oregon State on Nov. 14 to begin the TicketCity Legends Classic ... UWA has two of the top six players in the Gulf South Conference in minutes played with 6-3 junior guard Jared Woolfolk at 33.0 mpg and 6-6 junior forward Ryan Fitch at 31.0 mpg ... Woolfolk is the team's leading scorer at 14.0 ppg and rebounder at 5.5 rpg ... Fitch averages 11.3 ppg and 6-8 center Darrion Booker is the third Tiger in double figures at 10.3 ppg ... Woolfolk, Fitch, Booker and 5-11 junior guard Allen McGaha have started all four games ... UWA's opponents have hit almost twice as many 3-pointers as the Tigers, 32 (of 86, .372) to 17 (of 58, .293).
