So far this season:
Princeton will aim to have another season in which a slow start will turn into a strong finish. That pattern has happened more often than not in the last decade-plus:
2010-11: 2-3 start, won 23 of last 27, 12-2 Ivy champions
2009-10: 2-4 start, won 20 of last 25, 11-3 2nd Ivy
2008-09: 2-8 start, won 11 of last 17, 8-6 T-2nd Ivy (team was 6-23 overall/3-11 Ivy in '07-'08)
2005-06: 3-12 start, won 9 of last 12, 10-4 2nd Ivy
2003-04: 6-6 start, won 14 of last 16, 13-1 Ivy champions
2002-03: 4-7 start, won 12 of last 16, 10-4 3rd Ivy
2001-02: 3-7 start, won 13 of last 18, 11-3 Ivy champions
2000-01: 4-7 start, won 12 of last 16, 11-3 Ivy champions
1999-00: 1-4 start, won 18 of last 25, 11-3 2nd Ivy
1998-99: 5-4 start, won 17 of last 21, 11-3 2nd Ivy
After dropping in each of the first four games, Princeton's field goal percentage has risen in each of the last three games. The Tigers shot 39.7 percent against West Alabama in its second-best shooting game of the season after making 46.5 percent against Wagner in the season opener.
Both Princeton and Lafayette have looked to the 3-pointer with regularity as of late. Over the three-game weekend at Bucknell, Princeton put up 92 3-pointers, just four more than the 88 Lafayette has hoisted over its last three games. Prior to that, Princeton put up 64 3-pointers in four games while Lafayette lifted 52 in its first three games.
Over its last three games against Division I opponents, Princeton has averaged 54 field goal attempts to 43 for its foes. Especially true in the Bucknell and Morehead State games, the opponents have made it up on average at the free-throw line, averaging 26 attempts to Princeton's 19 over the three contests, while the rebounding margin over the three games was just about even at +0.3 per game for Princeton.
Princeton's opponents have averaged just five assists per game over the last four contests while the Tigers have averaged 13.3 over the same span.
Princeton has shot between 51 and 69 percent from the free-throw line in every game this year. The Tigers have benefited from their opponents performing similarly at the line, averaging 60 percent for the season.
Princeton has used three starting lineups in the seven games this season as only Douglas Davis, Ian Hummer and T.J. Bray have started all seven games. The changes have come at the #4 and #5 spots, with Will Barrett and Patrick Saunders taking turns at the #4 and Brendan Connolly and Mack Darrow doing so at the #5.
Princeton will look to keep the improvement coming on its own field goal percentage while ratcheting down on their opponents. The Tigers are eighth in the Ivy League in FG percentage at .384 while also standing eighth in FG percentage defense at .429.
Princeton is No. 1 in the Ivy League this season in defensive rebounding percentage as the Tigers have grabbed 72.2 percent of their opponents' missed shots.
Junior Ian Hummer is second in the Ivy League in both points per game (16.1, Zack Rosen of Penn 21.6) and rebounds per game (8.1, Greg Mangano of Yale 9.2).
Against Lafayette:
Princeton is 45-18 all-time against Lafayette including 33-7 in Princeton and 9-3 in Jadwin Gym. Lafayette is Princeton's second-most played non-Ivy League opponent behind Rutgers.
The game figures to be a relative contrast in styles, as Princeton is eighth in the Ivy League at 58.4 points per game and Lafayette is second in the Patriot League at 74.8 ppg. The Leopards also allow a Patriot League-high 77.3 points per game to Princeton's 59.1. No doubt Lafayette's Patriot-best 42.9 percent clip from 3-point range has helped its points-per-game average.
Princeton does not figure to benefit from opponents' missed free throws against Lafayette as much as it has against other foes. Princeton's opponents this season are averaging 60 percent from the line, while Lafayette averages 73.4 percent.
Princeton may be able to continue its upward trajectory in shooting percentage as Lafayette has allowed a Patriot League-high 47.7 percent FG percentage and a 41.3 percent 3FG clip this season.
Princeton has won back-to-back games against Lafayette for the first time since the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons. If Princeton can defeat the Leopards again, it would mark the first three-game win streak against Lafayette since Mitch Henderson's final three seasons as a player were capped off in 1997-98. The teams have played annually since the 1990-91 season.
Last season, Princeton defeated Lafayette 82-64 in Easton. Both teams return two of the three players in double figures for each side, as the Tigers bring back Ian Hummer (22) and Douglas Davis (16) while losing Dan Mavraides (17). Lafayette returns Jim Mower (17) and Ryan Willen (10) while losing Jared Mintz (17).
Princeton's better shooting percentage than Lafayette was the key to last year's game. Princeton outshot the Leopards 61.2 percent to 40 percent overall and 52.9 percent to 27.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Leopards held only a one-rebound advantage, 30-29, while turning the ball over 19 times to Princeton's 15.
Two years ago, Princeton's 62-48 win over a Lafayette team that entered at .500 (4-4) was the catalyst for a five-game Tiger winning streak after a 2-4 start. Douglas Davis had a game-high 23 points in that one.
Milestones:
Ian Hummer stands at 768 points for his career. He is on pace to become the third Tiger in the past year to reach 1,000 after Douglas Davis and Dan Mavraides '11. Prior to Davis and Mavraides, no Tiger had reached 1,000 since Judson Wallace '05 and Will Venable '05 in
2005. Hummer would be the only
the second junior (Davis) to reach 1,000 at Princeton since Kit Mueller
'91.
Hummer is also set
to pass his father, Ed Hummer '67, in scoring this season. Ed Hummer
scored 786 points in his three-season Princeton career, 18 more than Ian Hummer at present. His uncle, John Hummer '70, scored 1,031 points in his
three seasons.
Douglas Davis
is in 12th place on the Princeton career scoring list at 1,192. Davis is closing in on 11th place, held by a teammate of two of his
coaches, Steve Goodrich '98 (1,207). Davis is already the highest
scoring player at Princeton since Gabe Lewullis '99 and Brian Earl '99 finished their careers
with 1,277 and 1,428 points, respectively.
Davis is aiming to become only the second Tiger, after assistant coach Brian Earl '99, since the 3-point line came to be 25 years ago to have four seasons of at least 50 3-pointers made. Davis has 16 in seven games this season.
Davis is in fourth place in Princeton history in 3-pointers made with 209. Only Gabe Lewullis '99 (212), Sean Jackson '92 (235) and Brian Earl '99 (281) are ahead of him on that list. Davis is the 19th player in Ivy League history with 200 career 3-pointers.
Entering the season:
Princeton is coming off its 26th Ivy League championship (55 seasons) and 24th NCAA Tournament appearance (all since 1952), both Ivy League record totals.
Height
dominates the Tiger roster this season, as the average height is
6-foot-7. Nine of the 17 players are 6-foot-8 or taller. No other Ivy
League team has more than six players at 6-foot-8 (Columbia).
Princeton's 25 wins last season tied for the second-most in program history and the most since the 1997-98 team, which included current coaches Mitch Henderson '98 and Brian Earl '99, went 27-2.
Mitch Henderson '98, the team's Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach, is the 29th man to hold the job and the fourth consecutive alumnus to do so (John Thompson III '88, Joe Scott '87, Sydney Johnson '97).
Henderson, who played in three NCAA Tournaments for Princeton, spent 11 years at Northwestern under one of his former coaches at Princeton, Bill Carmody, as an assistant coach.
Princeton is second to North Carolina in alumni as active Division I head coaches. Eight Tar Heels are roaming the sidelines, while six Tigers are doing so: Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Scott '87 (Denver), Johnson '97 (Fairfield), Henderson '98 (Princeton), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Craig Robinson '83 (Oregon State).
There are 11 Ivy League alumni as current Division I head coaches, and Princeton has six. Four of the others are from Penn (Fran McCaffery, Iowa; Matt Langel, Colgate; Andrew Toole, Robert Morris; Jerome Allen, Penn) along with Jeff Jackson from Cornell (Furman).
Princeton will be road warriors in December and January, playing 10 of 11 games in those months away from Jadwin Gym. Only three of those games are in states that do not border New Jersey (Northeastern, Florida State, Florida A&M).
Princeton is looking to make up for its largest offensive loss to graduation since the 2007-08 to 2008-09 seasons, when the Tigers did not return 57 percent of their offense. From 2008-09 to 2009-10, the loss was just six percent. From 2009-10 to 2010-11, the loss was 25 percent. Now from 2010-11 to 2011-12, the loss is 39 percent. Princeton will be looking to replace the 2011 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year forward Kareem Maddox and second-team All-Ivy honoree forward Dan Mavraides.
Princeton has increased its win total over three consecutive offseasons, in 2008 (six to 13), 2009 (13 to 22) and 2010 (22 to 25). The last time Princeton had three such offseasons was 1995-97. The last time Princeton had a longer streak was six offseasons, from 1985-90.
Princeton's 59-57 NCAA Tournament loss to Kentucky, which went on to the national semifinal, was the closest the Tigers have come to winning an NCAA Tournament game since its last victory, a 69-57 triumph over UNLV in 1998. It was the closest Princeton NCAA Tournament game, win or lose, since the 1996 win over UCLA (43-41).
Princeton has made the postseason in each of the last two years, advancing to the College Basketball Invitational semifinal in 2010 before the NCAA Tournament last season. Princeton made the postseason annually from 1996-2002 and then only once from 2003-09, in the 2004 NCAAs.
Princeton led the Ivy League last season in scoring defense (63.0 ppg), field goal percentage defense (.330), rebounding margin (+4.1 rpg) and defensive rebounding percentage (.732)
On Lafayette: The Leopards have three players averaging double-figure points, led by 6-3 senior guard Jim Mower (20.3), 6-8 senior forward Ryan Willen (16.3) and 6-4 senior guard Rob Delaney (10.7) ... Delaney is a Lawrenceville School alum ... Fran O'Hanlon is in his 17th season as Lafayette's head coach and is the dean of the Patriot League coaches ... Lafayette has made the NCAA Tournament three times and twice in recent vintage, making back-to-back appearances in 1999 and 2000 ... Lafayette has not shot below 42 percent in any of its last five games ... after three straight games of better than 80 percent free throw shooting, Lafayette has averaged 58.3 percent over its last two, against Fairleigh Dickinson and Delaware ... Mower, Willen and Delaney are the only players to have started all six games while five players have split the other 12 starts ... Mower has scored in double digits in every game this season and went off for 37 against FDU ... Willen is one point away from also having scored double digits in every game, having scored nine in the opener against La Salle ... Willen had three straight games of 20 points or greater before scoring 17 against FDU and 10 against Delaware.
