So far this season:
Princeton is on a stretch in which it will play 12 straight Division I opponents on their home floors, something the program has never done. In all, Princeton will travel more than 3,900 miles to complete the 12-game road stretch.
Of Princeton's 11 road non-conference games, all but one (Rutgers) will be played on courts on which Princeton had not played before this season
The Siena loss was the first time Princeton lost this season when three or more players had 10+ points. While Douglas Davis (23), Ian Hummer (16) and T.J. Bray (15) scored aplenty, the rest of the team had just five points. The Tigers were 6-0 when three players reached double figures and are 0-6 when two or fewer reach 10+ points.
Douglas Davis was 7 for 14 from beyond the arc against Siena. His 23 points were his most since a year ago at Presbyterian and were four short of his career high set three years ago. His seven 3-pointers tied a career high set two years ago against Lafayette, and Davis's 14 3-point tries in the game were one short of the Princeton record held by Matt Lapin '90 and were even with the 14 that Gabe Lewullis '99 put up in 1999. Both of those games were against Harvard.
In the 11 Princeton games this season in which at least one team has reached 60 points, the first team to reach 60 is 10-1. Rider reached 60 first in its 72-71 OT loss to the Tigers on Dec. 14.
Princeton broke a five-game streak of shooting at least 40 percent when it shot .382 in the loss at Siena.
Each of Princeton's last two losses has come by four points. Of the first five losses, Princeton lost by one (Elon), two (N.C. State) and six (Bucknell) while the other two came by double digits to Wagner (16) and Morehead State (12).
Princeton is in the process of turning around a slow start in hopes of a strong finish. That pattern has happened more often than not in the last decade-plus:
2011-12: 1-5 start, has won 5 of last 7
2010-11: 2-3 start, won 23 of last 27, 12-2 Ivy champions
2009-10: 2-4 start, won 20 of last 25, 11-3 2nd Ivy
2008-09: 2-8 start, won 11 of last 17, 8-6 T-2nd Ivy (team was 6-23 overall/3-11 Ivy in '07-'08)
2005-06: 3-12 start, won 9 of last 12, 10-4 2nd Ivy
2003-04: 6-6 start, won 14 of last 16, 13-1 Ivy champions
2002-03: 4-7 start, won 12 of last 16, 10-4 3rd Ivy
2001-02: 3-7 start, won 13 of last 18, 11-3 Ivy champions
2000-01: 4-7 start, won 12 of last 16, 11-3 Ivy champions
1999-00: 1-4 start, won 18 of last 25, 11-3 2nd Ivy
1998-99: 5-4 start, won 17 of last 21, 11-3 2nd Ivy
Princeton has out-assisted its opponents 14.2 apg to 9.1 apg this season.
Princeton saw its five-game streak of outshooting its opponents from the field snap against Siena, which outshot Princeton 40 percent to 38.2 percent.
The Tigers have tried almost twice as many 3-pointers as their foes this season, 275-139. That has translated to an average of 10 more 3-pointers tried per game for Princeton than its opponents.
Princeton has shot 40 percent or better from beyond the 3-point arc in each of its last three games, the first time Princeton has done so over a three-game stretch since a four-game run from Nov. 22-Dec. 8, 2010.
Princeton had just six free-throw attempts at Siena, its fewest against a Division I foe since Dec. 20, 2008 when the Tigers were 3 for 6 at Central Connecticut State. Princeton had fewer than 10 FT attempts just once last season against a Division I opponent, taking seven tries in the NCAA Tournament against Kentucky and making six.
The Tigers have lost 11 straight games to Division I opponents in which Princeton has taken six or fewer tries from the FT line. The last time Princeton beat a Division I opponent when shooting six or fewer times from the line was Jan. 6, 2007, going 3 of 4 from the line to beat Rice 51-28 in Jadwin Gym. The last time Princeton won such a game on the road was Feb. 10, 2006 at Harvard (3-4 FT).
Siena's six turnovers were the fewest for a Princeton opponent since Mar. 7, 2009 at Cornell, also six. Princeton has lost five straight games in which it has forced six or fewer turnovers, last winning such a game on Mar. 6, 2005 against Dartmouth at Jadwin Gym (five TOs). The last road win in such a game was Jan. 31, 2004 at Yale (five TOs).
Siena tied a season high for a Princeton opponent with seven blocks, something Rider also did in a Princeton overtime win.
Princeton has used three starting lineups in the 13 games this season as only Douglas Davis, Ian Hummer and T.J. Bray have started every game. For the last six games, Patrick Saunders and Mack Darrow have made the current starting lineup after Will Barrett and Brendan Connolly started earlier in the season.
Through games of Dec. 22, Princeton's highest ranking in the Ivy League was second in rebounding defense as the Tigers hold their foes to an average of 33.8 boards per game. Princeton is ranked eighth in the Ivy in free throw percentage (.633) and 3-point percentage defense (.367).
Through games of Dec. 22, junior Ian Hummer was second in the Ivy League in both points per game (17.8, Zack Rosen of Penn 20.8) and rebounds per game (7.8, Greg Mangano of Yale 8.8). He was also third in the Ivy in steals (1.8/gm), eighth in the league in assists (3.4/gm) and 10th in blocks (0.8/gm), all while ranking fifth in minutes per game (33.8). Hummer was the only player in the Ivy League to be ranked in the league's top 10 in points, rebounds and assists.
Mack Darrow is the league leader in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.2 helpers per giveaway (35 a/11 t).
No Tiger has led the Ivy League in scoring since Brian Taylor '84 in 1972 (26.2 ppg, Taylor entered with the Class of '73) and no Tiger has led the Ivy in rebounding since Bill Bradley '65 in 1964 (13.0 rpg).
On the dunk tote board this season, Denton Koon leads the team with six, just ahead of Ian Hummer's five. Brendan Connolly has three and Will Barrett has one.
Princeton is 3-2 when leading at the half this season and 3-5 when trailing. The Tigers are 1-0 in overtime this season.
Against Florida State and Florida A&M:
None of the current Tigers have faced Florida State or Florida A&M, though Princeton has faced those two schools before. Princeton beat FAMU on Dec. 11, 1992 51-43 at Illinois, while the Tigers beat FSU on Dec. 15, 1972 61-59 at Marshall and on Dec. 28, 1998 50-46 at Hawai'i.
In Princeton's most recent meeting with Florida State, current assistant coach Brian Earl '99 was one of three Tigers in double figures with 13 points while classmate Gabe Lewullis '99 led all scorers with 14 points. Current MLB free agent pitcher Chris Young '02 had a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.
Florida State will be the second ACC opponent for the Tigers this season after a two-point loss at North Carolina State on Nov. 16. Princeton will be looking to snap a seven-game losing streak against ACC schools, with the last win coming in the 1999 NIT against N.C. State. Four of those losses were to Duke with one each to Maryland, N.C. State and Wake Forest.
Princeton's last win on an ACC opponent's home floor was on Mar. 15, 1999 when the Tigers beat N.C. State 61-58 in the second round of the NIT. Since then, Princeton has lost six in a row on ACC courts with four of those losses coming at Duke, one at Wake Forest and one at N.C. State. Princeton is 5-17 all-time against ACC teams on their home floors with 10 of those losses coming at Duke.
Princeton is 2-0 against MEAC schools, defeating Florida A&M in 1992 and North Carolina A&T in a preliminary round game of the 1983 NCAA Tournament at The Palestra.
FSU has already fallen to an Ivy League team this season as Harvard defeated the Seminoles 46-41 in the Bahamas last month.
The FSU game will be Princeton's fourth in a state capital this season and third straight after losing at N.C. State, defeating Northeastern and losing at Siena. Princeton will play twice more in state capitals this season, at Brown and at Harvard, whose gym is located in Boston.
Princeton will be after its second win in the same season against a "big six" conference team for the first time since the 1998-99 season. Princeton defeated Florida State, Texas, Georgetown and N.C. State that season. Princeton has already defeated Rutgers this year.
Princeton has not defeated two teams currently in "big six" conferences on their home floor since the 1966-67 season, when Princeton won at Villanova and North Carolina.
Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton has coached once against Princeton, serving as an assistant coach with Kentucky when the Wildcats beat the Tigers 72-58 in the 1977 NCAA Tournament at The Palestra. During Hamilton's one season coaching the Washington Wizards in 2000-01, Steve Goodrich '98, the last Tiger to play in the NBA, played three minutes in Chicago's 113-109 win at Washington on April 11, 2001.
First-year Florida A&M coach Clemon Johnson, who served at Alaska-Fairbanks for four years before coming to his alma mater, has never coached against Princeton. Johnson enjoyed a 10-year NBA career from 1978-88 supplemented by five more years in Italy through 1993. Johnson, who was a member of the 1983 NBA champion 76ers, did not have a Tiger as a teammate during his NBA years.
Mitch Henderson has coached three times against Florida State and once against Florida A&M. In three Big Ten-ACC Challenge games, Northwestern, with Henderson as an assistant coach, went 2-1 against the Seminoles with each team winning on its home court in 2001 (W), 2003 (L) and 2008 (W). Henderson and Northwestern defeated Florida A&M in 2001 on Northwestern's home floor.
Through games of Dec. 22, Florida A&M allowed a MEAC-high 77.0 points per game and is being outscored by a league-high average of 13.0 points per game. The Rattlers are also 13th in the MEAC in free throw percentage (.582) and rebounding defense (43.1 rebounds allowed/gm). The team is No. 1 in the MEAC in offensive rebounds at 13.7 per game. FAMU's 6-8 senior forward Yannick Crowder has the team's highest statistical ranking, standing second in offensive rebounds at 3.1 per game.
Both of the arenas in which Princeton will play during the Florida trip are named for former Florida legislators. Donald L. Tucker was a Speaker of the House in Florida and Al Lawson was a member of both Florida House and Senate.
The FAMU game will be Princeton's first New Year's Day game since the dawn of 1957. Princeton is 4-11 all-time on the first day of the year.
Milestones:
Ian Hummer stands at 887 career points in his quest for 1,000. He would become the third Princeton player since freshman eligibility began in the '78-'79 season to reach the 1,000 mark as a junior, after Kit Mueller '91 in 1990 and Douglas Davis last year. Having already passed his father, Ed '67 (786) in career scoring this season, Hummer is also on pace to catch his uncle John '70 (1,031).
Hummer could also catch his father for 10th place in career rebounds this season. Ian has 414 boards so far, while his father Ed finished with 550.
Hummer had his third double-double of the season against Rider, ahead of his double-double pace from last season. Hummer recorded his third of five double-doubles in 2010-11 in the 18th game of the season.
Douglas Davis
is in a tie for ninth place on the Princeton career scoring list at 1,277 points. Next up is Bud Haabestad '55 at 1,292, followed by current Sacramento Kings GM Geoff Petrie '70 at 1,321. Davis is the highest-scoring player at Princeton since Brian Earl '99 (1,428).
Davis is aiming to become only the second Tiger, after assistant coach Brian Earl '99, since the 3-point line came to be 25 years ago to have four seasons of at least 50 3-pointers made. Davis has 36 this season.
Davis is in third place in Princeton history in 3-pointers made with 229. Only Sean Jackson '92 (235) and Brian Earl '99 (281) are ahead of him on that list. Davis is tied for 12th on the Ivy League list for career 3-pointers with Yale's Ed Petersen ('88-'92). Next up are Cornell's Brandt Schuckman (231, '92-'96), Brown's Damon Huffman (232, '04-'08) and Princeton's Jackson.
Davis played his 103rd career game Wednesday at Siena. If he plays every game the rest of the regular season, he will finish at 120 career games, surpassing Brian Earl's program record of 116 games played.
Davis is closing in on Princeton's top 10 in career field goals made. He has 449 heading into the FSU game, and Barnes Hauptfuhrer '76 had 456 for 10th place. He is already in fifth place all-time in field goals attempted at 1,074. Geoff Petrie '70 is in fourth place at 1,172.
Entering the season:
Princeton is coming off its 26th Ivy League championship (55 seasons) and 24th NCAA Tournament appearance (all since 1952), both Ivy League record totals.
Height
dominates the Tiger roster this season, as the average height is
6-foot-7. Nine of the 17 players are 6-foot-8 or taller. No other Ivy
League team has more than six players at 6-foot-8 (Columbia).
Princeton's 25 wins last season tied for the second-most in program history and the most since the 1997-98 team, which included current coaches Mitch Henderson '98 and Brian Earl '99, went 27-2.
Mitch Henderson '98, the team's Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach, is the 29th man to hold the job and the fourth consecutive alumnus to do so (John Thompson III '88, Joe Scott '87, Sydney Johnson '97).
Henderson, who played in three NCAA Tournaments for Princeton, spent 11 years at Northwestern under one of his former coaches at Princeton, Bill Carmody, as an assistant coach.
Princeton is second to North Carolina in alumni as active Division I head coaches. Eight Tar Heels are roaming the sidelines, while six Tigers are doing so: Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Scott '87 (Denver), Johnson '97 (Fairfield), Henderson '98 (Princeton), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Craig Robinson '83 (Oregon State).
There are 11 Ivy League alumni as current Division I head coaches, and Princeton has six. Four of the others are from Penn (Fran McCaffery, Iowa; Matt Langel, Colgate; Andrew Toole, Robert Morris; Jerome Allen, Penn) along with Jeff Jackson from Cornell (Furman).
Princeton is looking to make up for its largest offensive loss to graduation since the 2007-08 to 2008-09 seasons, when the Tigers did not return 57 percent of their offense. From 2008-09 to 2009-10, the loss was just six percent. From 2009-10 to 2010-11, the loss was 25 percent. Now from 2010-11 to 2011-12, the loss is 39 percent. Princeton will be looking to replace the 2011 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year forward Kareem Maddox and second-team All-Ivy honoree forward Dan Mavraides.
Princeton has increased its win total over three consecutive offseasons, in 2008 (six to 13), 2009 (13 to 22) and 2010 (22 to 25). The last time Princeton had three such offseasons was 1995-97. The last time Princeton had a longer streak was six offseasons, from 1985-90.
Princeton's 59-57 NCAA Tournament loss to Kentucky, which went on to the national semifinal, was the closest the Tigers have come to winning an NCAA Tournament game since its last victory, a 69-57 triumph over UNLV in 1998. It was the closest Princeton NCAA Tournament game, win or lose, since the 1996 win over UCLA (43-41).
Princeton has made the postseason in each of the last two years, advancing to the College Basketball Invitational semifinal in 2010 before the NCAA Tournament last season. Princeton made the postseason annually from 1996-2002 and then only once from 2003-09, in the 2004 NCAAs.
Princeton led the Ivy League last season in scoring defense (63.0 ppg), field goal percentage defense (.330), rebounding margin (+4.1 rpg) and defensive rebounding percentage (.732)
Princeton was picked second in the Ivy League in the preseason media poll, tied with Yale and with Harvard in first place.
On Florida State: In the Seminoles' 12 games this season, FSU has scored fewer than 70 points only three times and fewer than 60 points only twice, putting up 41 in a loss to Harvard and 49 in a loss at Michigan State ... FSU is 7-0 at home this season ... FSU has made 13 NCAA Tournaments all-time including the last three, advancing to the Sweet 16 a year ago before losing to VCU ... through Dec. 22, FSU was No. 1 in the ACC in FG percentage defense at .354, in blocks at 6.7 per game, in steals at 8.8 per game; FSU was 12th in the ACC in assist-to-turnover ratio at 0.7:1 ... the highest individual ranking in the ACC for an FSU player went to FSU's sixth man, 6-5 senior guard Deividas Dulkys, whose 2.0 steals per game were second in the league ... FSU has used the same starting lineup in all 12 games, going with 6-5 junior guard Michael Snaer, 6-10 senior forward Bernard James, 6-11 senior forward/center Xavier Gibson, 6-8 sophomore forward Okaro White, and 6-5 grad student guard Luke Loucks ... the Seminoles have four players 6-10 or taller and three have played in all 12 games, though 6-11 junior college transfer Kiel Turpin has not yet played ... FSU is on a four-game streak of shooting better than 40 percent from the field ... FSU has canned no fewer than six 3-pointers in each of the last four games ... Snaer, a 2009 McDonalds All-America, had his seven-game double-digit scoring streak snapped with four points last time out at Florida ... Gibson has reached double digits in scoring in each of the past four games after doing so only once over the first eight games ... James has had five double-doubles already this season ... Loucks had just his third double-digit scoring game of the season against Florida (15) and had eight assists just two games ago against Loyola Marymount ... FSU is 2-4 when it shoots below 44 percent and 6-0 when it shoots 44 percent or better ... FSU is 1-4 when it scores 30 or fewer points by halftime and 7-0 when it exceeds 30 points at the break ... FSU was picked third in the ACC preseason media poll ... FSU lost its two double-digit average scorers from last season, 6-9 forward Chris Singleton (Washington Wizards) and 6-4 guard Derwin Kitchen.
On Florida A&M: All 12 Rattlers who have played more than one game this season have had at least one start this season, and no player has started all 13 games ... 6-6 junior forward Amin Stevens, who was academically ineligible for the fall semester, returned last time out against North Florida and instantly became the team's leading per-game scorer, pouring in 24 points in FAMU's 90-63 loss ... Stevens was FAMU's leading scorer last season (13.6 ppg) as the team returns its top three scorers from a year ago, including 5-10 sophomore guard Avery Moore (10.6 ppg '10-'11) and 6-8 senior forward Yannick Crowder (7.5 ppg '10-'11) ... Moore, Crowder and 6-2 sophomore forward Reggie Lewis have combined to score more than half of the team's points this season (434 of 845) ... FAMU's two wins this season have come against Allen University (NAIA, S.C.) and Southeastern University (NAIA, Fla.) ... FAMU trails its opponents this season in field goal percentage (.393 to .460), 3-point FG percentage (.301 to .361), free throw percentage (.582 to .668) rebounding (34.2 to 43.1 rpg) and points per game (65.0 to 77.0) ... the Rattlers have made three NCAA Tournaments, in 1999, 2004 and 2007 ... FAMU was picked 13th in the MEAC preseason coaches poll ... the Rattlers lost by just six at Auburn on Dec. 19, 75-69.
