So far this season:
Princeton just began a streak in which it will play 12 straight Division I opponents on their home floors, something the program has never done. The first three of those trips are within 50 miles, at Rutgers, Drexel and Rider, plus another game at Penn in January. All told, Princeton will travel more than 3,900 miles to complete the 12-game road stretch.
Princeton has broken and will break lengthy streaks in the early portion of this road trip. Against Rutgers, Princeton broke a five-game losing streak at the RAC, winning there for the first time since 1999 after playing there in alternate years. The game at Drexel will be Princeton's first trip since 1930 and second-ever trip to the campus, which is about three blocks from Penn's Palestra, an annual destination for Princeton that sits 47 miles from Jadwin Gym. Then, despite it being just seven miles away, Princeton will play its first-ever game at Rider's Alumni Gym, which opened in 1958.
Princeton was ahead by as much as 17 points with seven minutes to go at Rutgers Wednesday night before hitting a cold stretch in which the Tigers did not hit a field goal for 7:28. It was the third-longest cold streak of the season for Princeton, who suffered such droughts early against Wagner (9:47) and N.C. State (8:58) in the first two games of the season. All three droughts were in the second halves of those games.
Princeton is in the process of turning around a slow start in hopes of a strong finish. That pattern has happened more often than not in the last decade-plus:
2011-12: 1-5 start, has won three in a row
2010-11: 2-3 start, won 23 of last 27, 12-2 Ivy champions
2009-10: 2-4 start, won 20 of last 25, 11-3 2nd Ivy
2008-09: 2-8 start, won 11 of last 17, 8-6 T-2nd Ivy (team was 6-23 overall/3-11 Ivy in '07-'08)
2005-06: 3-12 start, won 9 of last 12, 10-4 2nd Ivy
2003-04: 6-6 start, won 14 of last 16, 13-1 Ivy champions
2002-03: 4-7 start, won 12 of last 16, 10-4 3rd Ivy
2001-02: 3-7 start, won 13 of last 18, 11-3 Ivy champions
2000-01: 4-7 start, won 12 of last 16, 11-3 Ivy champions
1999-00: 1-4 start, won 18 of last 25, 11-3 2nd Ivy
1998-99: 5-4 start, won 17 of last 21, 11-3 2nd Ivy
Princeton has attempted at least 20 3-pointers in each of the last five games. The last time that happened was from Dec. 20, 2008-Jan. 25, 2009, when the Tigers hoisted at least 20 3s in five straight games. Princeton has not tried 20 straight 3-pointers in six straight games since Dec. 9, 2006-Jan. 13, 2007, when the team did so in seven straight games.
Princeton has tried more than twice as many 3-pointers as its opponents this season, 199-97.
Princeton has had its three highest assist totals of the season among the last three games. The Tigers have averaged 18 assists per game over the last three after averaging 11.8 over the first six games.
Princeton has used three starting lineups in the nine games this season as only Douglas Davis, Ian Hummer and T.J. Bray have started all nine games. The changes have come at the #4 and #5 spots, with Will Barrett and Patrick Saunders taking turns at the #4 and Brendan Connolly and Mack Darrow doing so at the #5.
Princeton had its best free-throw shooting night of the season at Rutgers, hitting 13 of 18 for a 70.6 percent clip. The Tigers had not hit 70 percent yet this season.
Princeton's highest ranking in the Ivy League through Wednesday's games was second in assist-to-turnover ratio, just short of 1:1 with 125 helpers and 127 giveaways. Only Brown (162 ast, 155 TO) has more assists than turnovers this season. The only category in which Princeton is eighth in the Ivy is free throw percentage, where the Tigers are is hitting at a .613 clip.
Through Wednesday's games, junior Ian Hummer was second in the Ivy League in both points per game (17.4, Zack Rosen of Penn 22.1) and rebounds per game (8.2, Greg Mangano of Yale 9.0). Hummer is tied for No. 1 with Mangano at 3.0 offensive rebounds per game, while Mack Darrow is No. 1 in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.5 with 25 assists and 10 turnovers.
Princeton is 3-1 when leading at the half this season and 1-4 when trailing.
Against Drexel:
Though the schools are separated by only 47 miles and Drexel is mere blocks from Princeton's Ivy League rival Penn, the Tigers have faced the Dragons only three times since Drexel began playing Division I in 1974. Only one of those times has come on the road, as the Tigers won 26-15 on Jan. 4, 1930.
Princeton and Drexel have nearly identical averages in points per game and points per game allowed. The Tigers score an average of 59.7 ppg and allow 58.3, while Drexel scores 58.0 and allows 58.3.
Drexel coach Bruiser Flint is 2-0 against Princeton. One win came came on Dec. 14, 1994, when Massachusetts beat the Tigers 88-67 in Amherst with Flint on the UMass bench as an assistant coach, and the other came on Nov. 14, 2005 when Drexel beat Princeton 54-41 at Jadwin Gym.
The game at UMass in 1994 was the only time when a team with Mitch Henderson competed against a team with Bruiser Flint. Henderson, then a freshman, started and had seven points in 22 minutes in the defeat.
Henderson only played in one game against a CAA opponent at the time of the game during his time at Princeton. The Tigers defeated UNC Wilmington 63-50 on Dec. 3, 1997 in Jadwin Gym. Any current member of the team has played against no more than two CAA foes, both last season. The Tigers lost a close one at James Madison, 65-64 on Nov. 22, 2010, while defeating Northeastern 65-63 on Dec. 29, 2010 in Orlando.
Princeton lost to Drexel 54-41 in their last meeting, a Preseason NIT game at Jadwin Gym on Nov. 14, 2005. Current Princeton radio color man Noah Savage '08 led the Tigers with 15 points, but Princeton was outrebounded 46-17 in the loss. It was Drexel's first, and so far only, win in the series.
Princeton's last of eight wins against Drexel came on Dec. 26, 1997 at Madison Square Garden when the Tigers won 58-56 in the ECAC Holiday Festival. Current assistant coach Brian Earl '99 had a game-high 17 points as one of four Tigers in double figures along with Mitch Henderson, who scored 12 points.
Princeton's average of 22 3-pointers attempted per game, and its 31.7 percent clip of making them, is in contrast to what Drexel allows its opponents. Drexel's foes so far average 14 3-pointers per game attempted and have hit at just a rate of 24.1 percent.
Milestones:
Ian Hummer stands at 812 career points in his quest for 1,000. He would become the third Princeton player since freshman eligibility began in the '78-'79 season to reach the 1,000 mark as a junior, after Kit Mueller '91 in 1990 and Douglas Davis last year. Having recently passed his father, Ed '67 (786) in career scoring, Hummer is also on pace to catch his uncle John '70 (1,031).
Hummer could also catch his father for 10th place in career rebounds this season. Ian has 386 boards so far, while his father Ed finished with 550.
Douglas Davis
is in 11th place on the Princeton career scoring list at 1,223 points. Next up is Brian Taylor '84 (entered with the Class of '73) at 1,239. Davis is already the highest
scoring player at Princeton since Gabe Lewullis '99 and Brian Earl '99 finished their careers
with 1,277 and 1,428 points, respectively.
Davis is aiming to become only the second Tiger, after assistant coach Brian Earl '99, since the 3-point line came to be 25 years ago to have four seasons of at least 50 3-pointers made. Davis has 22 this season.
Davis is in third place in Princeton history in 3-pointers made with 215. Only Sean Jackson '92 (235) and Brian Earl '99 (281) are ahead of him on that list. Davis is the 19th player in Ivy League history with 200 career 3-pointers.
Entering the season:
Princeton is coming off its 26th Ivy League championship (55 seasons) and 24th NCAA Tournament appearance (all since 1952), both Ivy League record totals.
Height
dominates the Tiger roster this season, as the average height is
6-foot-7. Nine of the 17 players are 6-foot-8 or taller. No other Ivy
League team has more than six players at 6-foot-8 (Columbia).
Princeton's 25 wins last season tied for the second-most in program history and the most since the 1997-98 team, which included current coaches Mitch Henderson '98 and Brian Earl '99, went 27-2.
Mitch Henderson '98, the team's Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach, is the 29th man to hold the job and the fourth consecutive alumnus to do so (John Thompson III '88, Joe Scott '87, Sydney Johnson '97).
Henderson, who played in three NCAA Tournaments for Princeton, spent 11 years at Northwestern under one of his former coaches at Princeton, Bill Carmody, as an assistant coach.
Princeton is second to North Carolina in alumni as active Division I head coaches. Eight Tar Heels are roaming the sidelines, while six Tigers are doing so: Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Scott '87 (Denver), Johnson '97 (Fairfield), Henderson '98 (Princeton), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Craig Robinson '83 (Oregon State).
There are 11 Ivy League alumni as current Division I head coaches, and Princeton has six. Four of the others are from Penn (Fran McCaffery, Iowa; Matt Langel, Colgate; Andrew Toole, Robert Morris; Jerome Allen, Penn) along with Jeff Jackson from Cornell (Furman).
Princeton is looking to make up for its largest offensive loss to graduation since the 2007-08 to 2008-09 seasons, when the Tigers did not return 57 percent of their offense. From 2008-09 to 2009-10, the loss was just six percent. From 2009-10 to 2010-11, the loss was 25 percent. Now from 2010-11 to 2011-12, the loss is 39 percent. Princeton will be looking to replace the 2011 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year forward Kareem Maddox and second-team All-Ivy honoree forward Dan Mavraides.
Princeton has increased its win total over three consecutive offseasons, in 2008 (six to 13), 2009 (13 to 22) and 2010 (22 to 25). The last time Princeton had three such offseasons was 1995-97. The last time Princeton had a longer streak was six offseasons, from 1985-90.
Princeton's 59-57 NCAA Tournament loss to Kentucky, which went on to the national semifinal, was the closest the Tigers have come to winning an NCAA Tournament game since its last victory, a 69-57 triumph over UNLV in 1998. It was the closest Princeton NCAA Tournament game, win or lose, since the 1996 win over UCLA (43-41).
Princeton has made the postseason in each of the last two years, advancing to the College Basketball Invitational semifinal in 2010 before the NCAA Tournament last season. Princeton made the postseason annually from 1996-2002 and then only once from 2003-09, in the 2004 NCAAs.
Princeton led the Ivy League last season in scoring defense (63.0 ppg), field goal percentage defense (.330), rebounding margin (+4.1 rpg) and defensive rebounding percentage (.732)
Princeton was picked second in the Ivy League in the preseason media poll, tied with Yale and with Harvard in first place.
On Drexel: Drexel is second (of 12) in the CAA in scoring defense at 58.3 ppg allowed ... Drexel's .241 3-point FG percentage defense is the best in the CAA ... Drexel is 11th in the CAA in blocks per game at 2.3 ... the Dragons lead the CAA in defensive rebound percentage, grabbing 74.9 percent of their opponents' missed shots ... Drexel had used the same starting lineup for the first five games, including 6-4 sophomore guard Frantz Massenat, 6-6 freshman guard Damion Lee, 6-5 senior forward Samme Givens, 6-4 junior guard Derrick Thomas and 6-9 junior forward Daryl McCoy, before 6-8 sophomore forward Dartaye Ruffin started for McCoy last time out against Delaware ... Givens is the team's only senior ... Massenat is from nearby Ewing, N.J., and is a Trenton Catholic Academy alum ... Massenat is the team's leading scorer at 14.7 ppg while Lee also averages double figures at 11.5 ppg ... Massenat and Lee are two of the four most heavily-used players in the Colonial, Massenat playing a league second-highest 37.5 mpg and Lee a fourth-highest 34.7 mpg ... Lee is second in the CAA in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.8 ... Massenat is in the top 10 in the CAA in 3-point FG percentage (fifth, .435), assists per game (eighth, 3.3), and points per game (eighth, 14.7) ... Massenat is averaging 22 points per game in Drexel's two wins and 11 ppg in the team's four losses ... Drexel has shot 48.6 percent from the field in its two wins and 33.2 percent in its four losses ... Drexel was the preseason pick to win the CAA in the league's coaches poll but has lost four of five after opening the season with an 18-point win over Rider ... Princeton and Drexel have only one other common opponent besides Rider, Drexel's CAA foe Northeastern, though the Dragons will also face former Princeton coach Sydney Johnson '97 with Fairfield on Dec. 28 ... Drexel last made the NCAA Tournament in 1996.
