June 11, 2011 | Women's Track and Field
DES MOINES, IOWA (6/10/11) - Junior Alex Banfich ran in the national final of the women's 5000-meter run at the NCAA Track & Field Championships on Friday, June 10 at Drake University.
Banfich finished 20th at 16:19.17, in her second consecutive outdoor championship 5k.
The 24 runners stayed in a pack for the first 4200 meters before Oregon's Jordan Hasay, Villanova's Sheila Reid and Georgetown's Emily Infield started to break away. Reid would win the race at 15:37.57, followed by Infield at 15:38.23. Dartmouth's Abbey D'Agostino, the Heps 5k champion, edged Hasay for third.
Last year, Banfich finished eighth at 16:06.79.
Banfich will be back at it in just three months when she dons the Orange & Black for the start of the 2011 women's cross country season, as the defending Heps champion.
