Mavraides '11 Signs with Greek Basketball Team
August 14, 2011 | Men's Basketball
Dan Mavraides, a 2011 Princeton graduate who helped lead the Tigers back to the NCAA Tournament and the top of the Ivy League, has signed to play for Aris Basketball Club in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Mavraides' signing comes just after two of his former teammates, Kareem Maddox '11 (Netherlands) and Pawel Buczak '10 (Poland) agreed to play for European teams. Those three join Mason Rocca '00 (Italy) and Judson Wallace '05 (Spain) as Princetonians playing professionally overseas.
Over a four-season span that saw Princeton transform from a 6-23 record during Mavraides' freshman season to a 25-7 mark and an Ivy League title as a senior, Mavraides became the most recent member of Princeton's 1,000-point club and a two-time All-Ivy League honoree.
Mavraides increased his point total each year he wore the Orange and Black, from playing sparingly as a freshman to scoring 279 as a sophomore, 357 as a junior and 407 as a senior. Mavraides started every game of his junior and senior seasons.
Aris, which is based in northern Greece, plays in HEBA A1, which is the top division in the Hellenic Basketball Clubs Association. The team has won 10 league titles, including its most recent run that included five straight from 1987-91.
