Final Road Swing Ahead for No. 2 Field Hockey This Weekend

This Week for the Tigers: The No. 2 Princeton field hockey team will embark on its final regular season road trip this weekend. The Tigers (13-1, 5-0 Ivy) open up the road swing at Cornell (7-7, 3-2 Ivy) on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 12 noon, before heading to No. 7 Virginia (14-3, 3-1 ACC) two days later for a 4 p.m. meeting.
Last Time Out: The Tigers extended their winning ways, dropping Harvard, 7-0, on Oct. 20. The shutout victory marked Princeton's fourth in Ivy play and third consecutive. The following afternoon, the Tigers defeated their second top-five foe in then-No. 4 UConn, 4-1.
On Deck: Princeton wraps up the regular season with a Saturday, Nov. 3 meeting with Penn. Kick off is slated for 11 a.m. at Bedford Field.

Scouting Cornell: Cornell (7-7, 3-2 Ivy) snapped its six-game winning streak in its most recent double overtime 4-3 loss at Brown on Oct. 20.
The Big Red offense is led by Hannah Balleza's 13 goals, including three game-winners, and four assists for 30 points.
Defensively, goalie Carolyn Horner (7-6) has started 13 games, tallying a 1.78 goals against average, 103 saves and 24 goals against.
Tigers All-Time vs. Cornell: Princeton owns the all-time series versus Cornell, 26-5-3, including winning the last four meetings. The Tigers handed the Big Red a 6-1 loss on Oct. 30, 2011 the last time the two programs met.
Scouting No. 7 Virginia: The fifth top-10 opponent for Princeton this season, No. 7 Virginia has been a fixture in the top-10 all year. The Cavaliers are 14-3, 3-1 ACC and will travel to No. 22 Duke before hosting the Tigers. On the year, UVA is 7-3 versus ranked opponents.
Virginia has seen three different goalkeepers see action this year, with Jenny Johnstone taking the bulk of the minutes. Over 15 appearances and 12 starts, Johnstone (11-2) has a 1.41 goals against average, 48 saves and 18 goals against. Rebecca Holden (3-1) follows, seeing action in nine games and has a 1.75 goals against average.
The offense is led by Paige Selenski, an Olympic teammate of the Reinprecht sisters, behind her 23 goals and 11 assists for 57 points over 16 games.
Tigers All-Time vs. Virginia: Virginia owns the all-time series versus Princeton, 4-3, seeing all four wins in Charlottesville. The Tigers defeated the Cavaliers, 2-1, in their last meeting on Oct. 7, 2011.
Shut Them Out: Princeton has five shutouts on the year, including keeping its last four Ivy foes off the board. Before giving up their lone goal to the Huskies in their 4-1 win over then-No. 4 UConn, the Tigers had held opponents scoreless for 261 minutes.
Shark Attack: Kathleen Sharkey continues to torment defenses, as she has had at least one point in 11 of Princeton's 14 games. The Tiger offensive leader has seven multi-goal games, scoring three goals or more on four occasions this year. Along with her scoring prowess, she's also dished six assists in 2012.
She is now first all-time in career goals scored with 92 and career points with 212 in program history.
Leaders of the Pack: The Tigers are in sole possession of first place in the Ivy League. Princeton is the only undefeated team in the league and leads the conference in nearly every statistical category.
With a win this weekend at Cornell, Princeton claims at least a stake of its eighth consecutive Ivy League title.
Benvenuti Named Ivy Rookie of the Week: Teresa Benvenuti earned her second Ivy League Rookie of the Week accolade following her three-goal performance this past weekend. She had two goals versus Harvard on Oct. 20 and opened up the scoring effort the following day versus then-No. 4 UConn.
Holding Down Second: Princeton remains ranked No. 2 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Poll for the week of Oct. 23. The Tigers have been ranked second three times this year, including the past two weeks. Princeton has not been ranked lower than No. 4 all season.
Ranked Opponents: The Tigers have played six teams that currently or were formally nationally ranked, going 6-1. No. 16 Richmond was not ranked when they played at Bedford, but earned a place in the top-25 the following week.
Princeton's lone blemish came at the hands of the then-No. 2 team in the country Syracuse, 2-0, on Sept. 23.
The UConn Game: After 26 consecutive regular season victories, the Tigers handed then-No. 4 UConn its first loss, 4-1, on Oct. 22. Sophomore goalie Julia Boyle made her second start of the season in the match, tallying five saves. The lone goal conceded was off a penalty stroke.
RPI: Along with being the lone Ivy team nationally ranked, Princeton is also the only conference affiliate in the top-20 in RPI. The Tigers are No. 3 in the Oct. 22 poll.
Tiger Trailblazers: Kathleen Sharkey continues to lead the nation in points per game (3.71) and goals per game (1.64). Katie Reinprecht drops to No. 5 in the nation in assists per game (0.93) and No. 29 in points per game (1.79). Her younger sister Julia Reinprecht is No. 24 in assists per game (0.62), while goalie Christina Maida is No. 10 in goals against average (1.30) and No. 49 in saves percentage (0.71).
In the nation, Princeton is ranked No. 2 in: scoring average, goals per game, scoring margin, assists per game and points per game. The Tigers are No. 4 in goals against average and winning percentage, and No. 5 in shutouts per game and penalty corners per game.
Kirby, U.S. U21 National Team Win Bronze: Sophomore Sydney Kirby and the U.S. Field Hockey Junior National Team have qualified for the Junior World Cup following the squad's third place finish at the Pan American Junior Championship in Guadalajara, Mexico. Team USA defeated Chile, 2-1, en route to the bronze medal.
Kirby had two goals during the preliminary round, as the U.S. finished second in its pool play.
The Captains: Seniors Katie Reinprecht and Kathleen Sharkey and junior Julia Reinprecht will serve as field hockey's tri-captains in 2012.
Beautiful Bedford: In 2012 the Tiger field hockey program will call the newly constructed Bedford Field home, a state-of-the-art turf facility. Bedford features an optimal playing surface in artificial turf and a built-in watering system. There are currently 1,200 seats, with room for additional temporary seating.
Return of National Team Quartet: After spending the past year-and-a-half training and playing with the U.S. Senior National Team, juniors Michelle Cesan and Julia Reinprecht, and seniors Katie Reinprecht and Kathleen Sharkey return to the pitch. During their time with Team USA, the squad won gold at the Pan Am Games.
Both Reinprecht sisters were then named to the 16-player London Summer Olympics roster, with the duo contributing significantly in their Olympic debut. Cesan was also named one of two alternates to the Games.
A Decade Under Holmes-Winn: Head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn is entering her 10th season at the helm of the Tiger field hockey program. During that span Princeton boasts a 110-56-0 overall record and .663 winning percentage. The Tigers have won eight Ivy League titles under Holmes-Winn's tutelage, including the last seven consecutive championships.
Joining Holmes-Winn on the sidelines for her 10th season is assistant coach Melisa Meccage, and both Nate Franks '07 and Mike Pallister are entering their second season working under Holmes-Winn.
Experienced Rookies: The six-player incoming freshman class boasts a talented group. Each member of the Class of 2016 has youth national team experience, including Teresa Benvenuti who was named to the U.S. Women's Development Squad this past spring.
