So far this season:
Ian Hummer passed the career 1,000-point mark last Saturday at Yale and enters this weekend with 1,015 career points. Next up is his uncle, John Hummer '70, who finished his career with 1,031 points. Hummer already passed his father, Ed Hummer '67 (786 points) earlier this season.
Though Ian Hummer is on pace to pass his uncle in career points this weekend, John Hummer played in 67 career games to make his 1,031 points, while Ian has played in 84 games entering the weekend.
Compared to his contemporaries, Hummer's achievement is all the more remarkable considering he began shooting 3-pointers in games just this season. Heading into the weekend, Hummer has 14 3s this season and in his career.
Hummer is on pace to stand second in career scoring and career field goals in program history, behind only Bill Bradley '65, when his college career is complete next season. Bradley performed his feats in just three seasons and was a teammate of Ian Hummer's father Ed Hummer '67 for one varsity season, the run to the NCAA national semifinal in 1965.
Winning an Ivy League title after starting 2-3 may not be an advantageous position, but it is not unprecendented. Penn's 2002 team finished 11-3 after starting 2-3 and emerged from a three-way Ivy League playoff to make the NCAA Tournament.
Princeton hadn't had three straight games of shooting 50 percent from the field in six years, and that note will remain true after the Tigers had their second-lowest shooting night of the season Saturday at Yale at 33.3 percent. The Tigers hit 32.8 percent against Elon on Nov. 22.
Over the last 14 games, Princeton has had just three games of lower than 40 percent shooting (Siena, Cornell, Yale, all losses), but none have come back-to-back.
Princeton's 19 percent shooting from 3-point range at Yale was its lowest since Feb. 19, 2011 when it was upset at Brown, 75-65, while also shooting 19 percent. In each game, Princeton went 4 of 21 from distance.
Princeton is 1-8 when it doesn't reach 60 points this season and 10-2 when it scores 60 points. On the defensive end, Princeton is 5-2 when it allows fewer than 60 points and 6-8 when it allows 60 or more.
Princeton is 9-3 this season when it shoots 40 percent or better from the field and 2-7 when it doesn't shoot at least 40 percent.
Princeton is 9-4 this season when it shoots 30 percent or better from 3-point range and 2-6 when it shoots below 30 percent from distance.
Princeton is 1-6 this season when allowing 45 percent or better from the field and 10-4 when holding foes below 45 percent.
Princeton has won the rebounding battle in just three of the last 13 games but is 8-5 over that span. Over the first eight games, Princeton won the rebounding battle five times but was just 3-5 over that span.
Yale's 12 assists to nine for Princeton broke a streak of 10 games in which Princeton out-assisted its opponents.
The Tigers are 8-5 this season when they hoist 20 or more 3s and 3-5 when they put up fewer than 20.
In the 18 Princeton games this season in which at least one team has reached 60 points, the first team to reach 60 is 16-2, with the two exceptions both being OT games. Rider reached 60 first in its 72-71 OT loss to the Tigers on Dec. 14, and FSU reached 60 first in its 75-73 3OT loss to Princeton on Dec. 30.
Princeton has out-assisted its opponents 14.0 apg to 9.4 apg this season.
Princeton's highest Ivy League statistical ranking is second in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.1:1. The Tigers do not rank eighth in any category.
On the dunk tote board this season, Ian Hummer leads the team with 10 while Denton Koon has seven slams and Brendan Connolly also has seven.
Princeton is 7-3 when leading at the half this season and 4-7 when trailing. The Tigers are 2-0 in overtime this season.
Princeton has a seven-game winning streak going in overtime games, the program's longest since winning 10 straight OT games from 1951-61. The youngest three classes on this Tiger team have not lost an OT game. The two streaks are the two longest in program history.
Against Dartmouth:
Both of 6-2 sophomore guard Tyler Melville's parents are Princeton alums, including father Randy '81, a basketball alum, and Lael '82. Randy Melville averaged 8.7 ppg in six games against Dartmouth while Tyler is averaging 7.5 ppg so far in two games against Princeton. Randy Melville was among Princeton's top three in scoring in each of his three seasons as a Tiger, leading the team as a junior in 1980.
No Big Green player scored more than 12 points in either game against Princeton last year. Tyler Melville led the team with 11 in Jadwin and R.J. Griffin had 12 in Hanover.
Dartmouth was consistent against the Tigers on the offensive end, shooting 41.2 percent in the game at Jadwin (21-51) and 41.4 percent in Hanover (24-58).
Princeton led by as many as 25 points in last year's game at Hanover, capping a period in which Princeton outscored Dartmouth 38-12 over 18 minutes bridging halftime. Dartmouth led 18-17 midway through the first half, but Princeton went on a 16-0 run over more than eight minutes to assume control of the game on the way to a 77-55 win.
Princeton returns 55 of its 77 points from the game in Hanover last season with Kareem Maddox's 12 points as the primary loss. Dartmouth returns 34 of its 55 with then-seniors Ronnie Dixon and Clive Weeden putting in eight points apiece.
In Princeton's 68-53 win at Jadwin Gym last season, the now-graduated Kareem Maddox had 15 boards to pace a 42-29 rebounding edge. The Tigers return two of the three players who scored in double figures, led by Ian Hummer's 19 points with Douglas Davis tacking on 16. In all, the Tigers return 48 of the 68 points with Dan Mavraides' 14 as the largest share. Brendan Connolly started and played just four minutes after racking up two quick fouls.
Dartmouth returns 40 of its 53 points from last season including all three players in double figures: Tyler Melville with 11 points and Kirk Crecco and R.J. Griffin with 10 points apiece.
Princeton has won four in a row against Dartmouth, but the last Big Green win is a memorable one. On Feb. 21, 2009, the Big Green beat Princeton 66-63 on the dedication night for Carril Court. Princeton's failings on the glass played a role in the defeat, as despite shooting 59 percent, Princeton had 15 fewer shots than did Dartmouth. The Big Green outrebounded the Tigers 29-17 that night including 12 offensive boards.
Against Harvard:
Last time these teams met, on Yale's home court in the Ivy League playoff necessitated by each team's 12-2 record, Harvard was 2.8 seconds from its first NCAA Tournament berth since 1946. Douglas Davis's jumper over Oliver McNally, however, fell and Princeton won its 24th NCAA bid, first since 2004.
Milestones:
Douglas Davis
is in sixth place on the Princeton career scoring list at 1,383 points. Next up is current assistant coach Brian Earl '99 at 1,428, the last Princeton player to score as many as Davis.
Against Cornell on Jan. 13, Davis became only the second Tiger, after assistant coach Brian Earl '99, since the 3-point line came to be 25 years ago to have four seasons of at least 50 3-pointers made.
Davis is in second place in Princeton history in 3-pointers made with 247. Only Brian Earl '99 (281) is ahead of him on that list. Davis is fourth on the Ivy League list for career 3-pointers behind Penn's Tim Begley (253, 2001-05), Brian Earl '99 (281) and Cornell's Ryan Wittman (377, 2006-10)
At 111 career games played, Davis is on track to surpass Brian Earl's program record of 116 games played.
Davis is seventh in program history in field goals made at 491. Brian Taylor '84 is next up at 507. He is fourth all-time in field goals attempted at 1,181. Pete Campbell '55 is in third place at 1,199.
Ian Hummer remains ahead of his double-double pace from last season, when he was the first Tiger since Bob Roma '79 to have five double-doubles in a season. Hummer had his fourth double-double of the season Dec. 30 against Florida State. Hummer recorded his fourth of five double-doubles in 2010-11 in the 22nd game of the season.
Entering the season:
Princeton is coming off its 26th Ivy League championship (55 seasons) and 24th NCAA Tournament appearance (all since 1952), both Ivy League record totals.
Height
dominates the Tiger roster this season, as the average height is
6-foot-7. Eight of the 16 players are 6-foot-8 or taller. No other Ivy
League team has more than six players at 6-foot-8 (Columbia).
Princeton's 25 wins last season tied for the second-most in program history and the most since the 1997-98 team, which included current coaches Mitch Henderson '98 and Brian Earl '99, went 27-2.
Mitch Henderson '98, the team's Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach, is the 29th man to hold the job and the fourth consecutive alumnus to do so (John Thompson III '88, Joe Scott '87, Sydney Johnson '97).
Henderson, who played in three NCAA Tournaments for Princeton, spent 11 years at Northwestern under one of his former coaches at Princeton, Bill Carmody, as an assistant coach.
Princeton is second to North Carolina in alumni as active Division I head coaches. Eight Tar Heels are roaming the sidelines, while six Tigers are doing so: Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Scott '87 (Denver), Johnson '97 (Fairfield), Henderson '98 (Princeton), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Craig Robinson '83 (Oregon State).
There are 11 Ivy League alumni as current Division I head coaches, and Princeton has six. Four of the others are from Penn (Fran McCaffery, Iowa; Matt Langel, Colgate; Andrew Toole, Robert Morris; Jerome Allen, Penn) along with Jeff Jackson from Cornell (Furman).
Princeton is looking to make up for its largest offensive loss to graduation since the 2007-08 to 2008-09 seasons, when the Tigers did not return 57 percent of their offense. From 2008-09 to 2009-10, the loss was just six percent. From 2009-10 to 2010-11, the loss was 25 percent. Now from 2010-11 to 2011-12, the loss is 39 percent. Princeton will be looking to replace the 2011 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year forward Kareem Maddox and second-team All-Ivy honoree forward Dan Mavraides.
Princeton has increased its win total over three consecutive offseasons, in 2008 (six to 13), 2009 (13 to 22) and 2010 (22 to 25). The last time Princeton had three such offseasons was 1995-97. The last time Princeton had a longer streak was six offseasons, from 1985-90.
Princeton's 59-57 NCAA Tournament loss to Kentucky, which went on to the national semifinal, was the closest the Tigers have come to winning an NCAA Tournament game since its last victory, a 69-57 triumph over UNLV in 1998. It was the closest Princeton NCAA Tournament game, win or lose, since the 1996 win over UCLA (43-41).
Princeton has made the postseason in each of the last two years, advancing to the College Basketball Invitational semifinal in 2010 before the NCAA Tournament last season. Princeton made the postseason annually from 1996-2002 and then only once from 2003-09, in the 2004 NCAAs.
Princeton led the Ivy League last season in scoring defense (63.0 ppg), field goal percentage defense (.330), rebounding margin (+4.1 rpg) and defensive rebounding percentage (.732).
Princeton was picked second in the Ivy League in the preseason media poll, tied with Yale and with Harvard in first place.
On Dartmouth: The Big Green have two of the Ivy League's top eight rebounders in 6-8 freshman forward Gabas Maldunas (6th, 7.0 rpg) and 6-6 freshman forward Jvonte Brooks (8th, 6.0 rpg), something no other Ivy can claim ... 6-6 freshman guard/forward John Golden is from central New Jersey as the Freehold native is a Peddie School alum ... the Big Green have no players averaging double-figure points but six players averaging between six and eight ppg ... those six players -- Maldunas, Brooks, Golden, 6-4 junior guard R.J. Griffin, 6-4 senior guard/forward David Rufful and 6-1 senior guard Jabari Trotter -- have combined for 77.5 percent of the team's minutes and 91.8 percent of the team's starts ... 6-3 senior guard Kirk Crecco is from the same hometown as Princeton senior Patrick Saunders, Gilford, N.H. ... three of Dartmouth's four wins have come at home, as the Big Green are 1-10 on the road this season ... Dartmouth is 0-14 this season when held below 62 points and 0-11 when shooting below 40 percent ... Dartmouth is 3-0 when holding opponents below 35 percent shooting ... 6-2 sophomore guard Tyler Melville has scored double digits in four of the last eight games after not doing so in any of the first 14 contests ... the Big Green are eighth in the Ivy in scoring (58.1 ppg) and field goal percentage (.392) ... the team is also eighth in the league in assists (10.3 apg), assist-to-turnover ratio (0.8:1) and 3-pointers per game (5.8).
On Harvard: The Crimson are off to a 20-2 start ... Harvard ranks first in the Ivy League in scoring defense (53.6 ppg, 3rd in nation), scoring margin (+12.0 ppg), free throw percentage (.748), rebounding defense (28.6 rebs allowed) and blocks (4.7 bpg) ... the Crimson have the top two players in assist-to-turnover ratio in the Ivy, with 6-1 junior guard Brandyn Curry at 2.5:1 and 6-3 senior guard Oliver McNally at 2.4; both players are in the NCAA's top 30, Curry 24th and McNally 29th ... Harvard is undefeated in the Ivy despite not having a player in the top 10 in the league in scoring ... Harvard has two of the top four shooters in the Ivy by FG percentage, with 6-8 senior forward Keith Wright at .595 (2nd) and 6-7 junior forward Kyle Casey at .518 (4th) ... Curry and McNally are both in the top eight in the Ivy in assists per game, making Harvard the only school with two players in the top eight ... the Ivy's best free throw shooting team, Harvard has three players in the top 10 in FT percentage, with McNally at .893 (2nd), 6-5 sophomore guard Laurent Rivard at .789 (7th), and Curry at .769 (10th) ... Wright and Casey are two of the Ivy's top five shot blockers, with Wright at 1.6 (3rd) and Casey at 1.2 (5th) ... Harvard does not have any players among the top 10 in minutes per game, with McNally leading the team in that category at 30.5 mpg ... Harvard is 17-0 this season when scoring 30 points by halftime and 18-0 when scoring at least 55 points ... Harvard is 14-0 when opponents do not reach 60 points ... both of Harvard's losses this season have come when the team shoots below 40 percent, which the Crimson have only done three times ... both teams to beat Harvard this season have hit at least half their 3-point attempts, which Harvard has allowed only three times ... six players, including Wright, Curry, McNally, Casey, Rivard and 6-5 junior guard Christian Webster, have shared all of Harvard's starts, and only Rivard and Webster have split a starting spot.
