PRINCETON, N.J. - Ryan McCarthy and Allison Evans each netted a pair of goals to lead the Princeton University field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Ivy League rival Brown University.
Putting the brakes on a five-game losing skid, Princeton improved to 4-9 (3-1 Ivy) on the season and 29-8-1 all-time against Brown. The Bears dropped to 8-4 (1-3 Ivy) on the year.
Outshooting Brown 12-2 over the first 35 minutes, Princeton generated the majority of scoring chances in the first half. In the eighth minute, the Tigers broke through on Evans' third goal of the season. Collecting a loose ball on the right side, Stephanie Goldberg backhanded a pass to the senior striker, who slotted a low shot into the bottom left corner at 7:41.
Continuing to push forward, the Orange and Black narrowly missed out on a chance to add to the tally with just under 12 minutes to go in the half. Gaining possession in the midfield, McCarthy played a long ball to Maddie Copeland on the left side. Coming off her line, Brown goalie Shannon McSweeney charged to the edge of the circle, kicking the ball out before Copeland could put a clean shot on target.
In the 33rd minute, McCarthy was once again in the thick of things, putting away the Tigers' second score. Carrying it up the right side, Sydney Kirby centered a pass to the freshman before reaching the endline. Quickly going to goal, McCarthy snapped a shot into the near corner at 32:45 to make it 2-0.
Building on the Princeton momentum, McCarthy notched her second of the day just 1:17 after the intermission. Receiving a pass in front, the rookie once again beat McSweeney, shooting across her body into the left corner to pad the Tiger cushion.
Capping off the scoring at 40:48, Evans dribbled past a couple of Brown defenders on the left side before spinning and hammering a low shot into the back of the opposing cage. Now with four goals and an assist on the season, Evans upped her career point total to 93, passing Lisa Rebane '95 (91) for ninth on the school's scoring list. With seven more points, the senior would become just the ninth player in program history to reach the 100-point plateau.
Princeton finished with a decisive 23-7 shot advantage, with both teams earning four penalty corners. McSweeney made 11 saves, while Julia Boyle had a pair of stops in a shutout win.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 25 against Harvard University.
