L 72-56 • Box Score Princeton closed its 2013-14 season with a 72-56 loss at Fresno State in the quarterfinal round of the College Basketball Invitational. Hans Brase had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds while the now-graduated T.J. Bray added 17, but the Tigers were hampered by cold shooting, making just 31.7 percent of tries from the field. That included going 8 for 30 from 3-point range, while Fresno State shot 47.5 percent from the field overall.

• Princeton opens its 115th season of varsity men's basketball Friday, and Rider will be the season-opening opponent for just the second time ever. The teams met to start Princeton's 1944-45 season in what was also the first basketball game in Baker Rink, Princeton's temporary home for three seasons before the opening of Dillon Gym and after a fire destroyed University Gym. Dillon Gym was constructed on the site of the old University Gym.
• Rider and Princeton are separated by about seven miles of U.S. Route 206. The teams are each other's closest Division I schools.
• Princeton enters the season returning 56 percent of its points from a year ago after losing four seniors: T.J. Bray (18.0 ppg in 2013-14), Will Barrett (10.3 ppg), Jimmy Sherburne (4.3 ppg) and Chris Clement (2.7 ppg). That group accounted for nearly 40 percent of the team's minutes.
• In Will Barrett and T.J. Bray, Princeton graduated its top two 3-point scorers. Combined, the pair had 115 of the team's 278 3-point buckets. Princeton returns 51 percent of its 3-pointers from a year ago, with Spencer Weisz and Hans Brase co-leading the returners with 34 apiece.
• Princeton's 70.6 ppg average from 2013-14 and its 64.4 ppg allowed were both the team's most since the 1971-72 season.
• Princeton is trying to win back-to-back home openers for the first time since the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons. Since then, the team's home openers were against Wagner in 2011-12 (loss), Northeastern in 2012-13 (loss), and Florida A&M in 2013-14 (win).
• If Amir Bell (or any other freshman) starts against Rider, it'd be the second straight year Princeton started a freshman on opening night. Spencer Weisz started against FAMU in the 2013-14 opener, becoming the first freshman since Douglas Davis '12 and Patrick Saunders '12 to make their earliest possible start.
• The Broncs return just six of their 45 points from the last meeting with Princeton two seasons ago. Six players contributed to Princeton's 62 points from that Dec. 20, 2012 meeting, but only two are back this season, and only Hans Brase (team-high 17 points) will play as Denton Koon (15 points) is out injured.
• Princeton coach Mitch Henderson is presently ninth on the program's all-time wins list, but he could move up to seventh by midseason. His 58 wins are eight behind predecessor Sydney Johnson '97 and 10 behind John Thompson III '88.
• Princeton and Rider have just two common opponents this season, despite being so close geographically. Rider also plays Princeton's Ivy rival Penn and Princeton will face Rider's MAAC foe Saint Peter's.
• Of Princeton's 150 starts last season, 82 went to non-seniors.
• Last season's 278 3-pointers bettered the previous program record of 265, set in Mitch Henderson's senior year of 1997-98.
• In 58 Ivy League seasons, Princeton has posted 52 winning Ivy seasons, four 7-7 finishes and just two losing records.
• Mitch Henderson is trying to become the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (Princeton coach 2000-04) to have winning campaigns in each of his first four seasons as Princeton coach. Henderson would be the sixth Princeton coach to do so (Leuhring, Van Breda Kolff, Carril, Carmody, Thompson).
• Princeton closed last season with two national top-10 statistical rankings. The Tigers were No. 7 in fewest fouls (508) and fourth in 3-pointers per game (9.3).
 |
• Rider finished last season ranked eighth in the nation in 3-point FG percentage at .397. Rider returners went 110 of 267 (.411) from 3 last year, led by .469 (45-96) from Jimmie Taylor.
• Rider was picked seventh in the MAAC preseason poll. The team finished in a three-way tie for sixth a year ago.
• Rider had the ninth and 11th overall scorers in the MAAC last season, but neither Anthony Myles (16.2 ppg) nor Daniel Stewart (15.2 ppg) return. Stewart was also second in the MAAC in free throw percentage at .854, while Jimmie Taylor, who does return, led the conference in 3FG percentage at .469. Myles and Stewart were also the team's top two rebounders last season.
• Rider returns 50.8 percent of its scoring from a year ago despite losing its top two scorers in Myles and Stewart. Jimmie Taylor (12.1 ppg) is the team's leading returning scorer.
• Rider's .470 FG percentage allowed was 10th in the 11-team MAAC last season.
• Rider coach Kevin Baggett is in his third season as head coach and has been a part of Rider's staff for the past eight seasons.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his third season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 58-32.
Under Henderson, Princeton is 30-8 at home, 28-14 in the Ivy League, and 18-3 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 45-11 when leading at the half under Henderson.
Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first three campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Luehring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04).
Henderson is in ninth place on the Princeton all-time wins list, with predecessor Sydney Johnson '97 in eighth with 66 wins over four seasons.
Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95.
Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, current San Diego Padre Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14.
Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield).
Prior to Princeton, Henderson coached at Northwestern for 11 seasons under his final head coach at Princeton, Bill Carmody, from 2000-11.
