L 79-68 • Box Score Sophomore Spencer Weisz set a career best with 22 points against Incarnate Word Saturday, but it wasn't enough to overcome the team's 35.6 percent shooting from the field including 4 of 18 from beyond the arc in a 79-68 loss. UIW shot 37.3 percent from the field but was 35 of 39 from the line including 16 of 18 in the final three-plus minutes to seal it.

• Princeton will compete in the Wooden Legacy, an eight-team event Thursday through Sunday in Fullerton and Anaheim, California. It will be Princeton's first visit to Southern California for a game since Dec. 27-28, 1969, when the Tigers competed in the Bruin Classic hosted by John Wooden's UCLA Bruins. That was the second of two times Wooden coached against Princeton, both against Pete Carril in back-to-back years. The previous year at Madison Square Garden, Wooden's AP No. 1-ranked Bruins beat Carril's Tigers 83-67, and in 1969 in Westwood, Princeton came within a bucket of upsetting the No. 2-ranked Bruins, 76-75.
• Princeton and UTEP were in back-to-back Final Fours, Princeton in 1965 led by Bill Bradley '65 and UTEP in 1966 as Texas Western, the team about which the movie "Glory Road" was made. Coincidentally, Princeton's Final Four was out west, in Portland, and UTEP's was out east, at Maryland. In 1967, Texas Western College changed its name to the University of Texas at El Paso.
• The basketball paths of Mitch Henderson and UTEP coach Tim Floyd have crossed or come close a couple times, with both coaching in the Chicago area in 2000-01, Henderson then in his first year as an assistant at Northwestern and Floyd in his last year as head coach of the Chicago Bulls. Earlier, in 1995, Floyd was the head coach at Iowa State and defeated Pete Carril, Henderson and the Tigers in Ames, 50-47. Princeton's leading scorer in that game was Steve Goodrich '98 with 20 points. In the 2000-01 season, Goodrich played 12 games for the Chicago Bulls, who were coached by Tim Floyd.
• Both Princeton and UTEP have a player averaging a double-double. Hans Brase is at 14 points and 10 rebounds per game for Princeton and Vince Hunter averages 18.5 points and 13 points per game for the Miners.
• The UTEP game will be Princeton's second against teams from Texas, all without visiting the Lone Star State. Incarnate Word came up to Princeton last Saturday and left Jadwin Gym with a 79-68 win, and now Princeton and the Miners will meet in California. UTEP and Incarnate Word will play on Dec. 8 in El Paso.
• Princeton and UTEP nearly met for a third time in March. The teams were in the same quarter of the CBI bracket, and while Princeton beat Tulane to open the tournament, UTEP lost at home to Fresno State, and so the Tigers went to Fresno instead. The teams have met twice before, but neither meeting was recent and both were in El Paso. Princeton won in 1996 and UTEP won in 2004. The leading scorer in the 1996 game will be on the sideline Thursday, as Brian Earl '99 dropped in 23 points as a freshman to lead Princeton to a 76-64 win. Princeton's radio color commentator, Noah Savage '08, started as a freshman in the 2004 game, though the Miners came away with a 68-42 win.
• Despite being about 1,200 miles from Texas, Princeton has almost half as many players from the state as UTEP does. The Tigers have Dallas-area natives Daniel Edwards and Jackson Forbes on the roster, and UTEP has five Texans, including two from the Dallas area, two from El Paso and one from Houston.
• Both Princeton's and UTEP's most iconic coaches were born in 1930, were enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997 and have their home facilities named for them. UTEP plays in the Don Haskins Center and Princeton plays on Pete Carril Court. Haskins passed away in 2008, and the two missed coaching against each other by less than a year. The 1996 Princeton-UTEP game was in Princeton's first season in 29 campaigns without Carril after he retired following the 1995-96 season. Haskins was also an assistant coach for the 1972 U.S. men's Olympic basketball team, a tournament that included the controversial 51-50 Soviet win in the final.
• UTEP coach Tim Floyd is familiar with the Princeton Offense, having used elements of it while coaching the New Orleans Hornets and later at USC. In the Wooden Legacy's pre-event conference call with reporters, Floyd said he had read Carril's book, The Smart Take From The Strong.
• Princeton and UTEP have some statistical similarities so far this season, with each team being outshot from the field and from 3-point range. UTEP is hitting at a 40.5 percent clip from the field, its opponents 45.0 percent. The Miners are hitting 31.8 percent of their 3-pointers, their opponents 37.1 percent. Princeton is shooting 40 percent from the field, its opponents 44.9 percent. The Tigers are making 35.2 percent of their 3-point tries, their opponents 43.3 percent. Two key differences between the teams are rebounding and turnovers, with UTEP carrying a 4.5 rpg rebounding advantage and turning the ball over four fewer times per game. Princeton is being outrebounded by 1.3 rpg and has 3.3 more turnovers per game than its opponents.
• Princeton will face either Xavier or San Diego in Friday's game. The Tigers have faced both teams before, but none recently. Princeton is 1-3 all-time against Xavier with games coming between 1989 and 2000. Princeton's only meeting with San Diego was in an opening-round game of the 1983 NCAA Tournament, which Princeton won 65-56 at The Palestra.
• Princeton has rebounded from slow starts and slumps before under Mitch Henderson. The Tigers started 1-5 in Henderson's first season of 2011-12 while having to replace Dan Mavraides '11 and Kareem Maddox '11, two key members of the 2011 Ivy League championship team. The Tigers went 19-7 the rest of the way that year. The team started 1-3 and 5-7 in 2012-13 after moving on from the graduation of Douglas Davis '12, finishing the season 12-4 after the 5-7 start. Last season, after a 12-3 start while adjusting to life without Ian Hummer '13, the Tigers hit a bump by going 0-3 and 3-5 to start the Ivy League season before closing the campaign by winning six of their last seven games.
• Over the first four games last season, 278 of 800 minutes went to freshmen and sophomores for the Tigers. Over the first four games this season, 473 of 800 minutes have gone to freshmen and sophomores.
• Princeton has yet to post a single-turnover game, with a low of 11 coming at George Mason. Princeton's oponents haven't turned the ball over more than 13 times in a game, and the Tigers have won the turnover battle only once in four games this season, at George Mason (13-11).
• Of Princeton's 225 points so far, 258, or 87.2 percent, have been scored by non-seniors. Princeton's top five scorers are non-seniors, and three of those are freshmen or sophomores (Weisz, Cook, Miller, Bell).
• Spencer Weisz and Hans Brase account for 48.4 percent of Princeton's points this season.
• There's a long way to go this season, but Hans Brase is averaging a double-double at 14 points and 10 rebounds per game. No Princeton player has finished a season averaging a double-double since Bill Bradley '65 in 1964-65, when he averaged 30.5 ppg and 11.8 rpg as a senior.
• Seven players (Weisz, Brase, Miller, Cook, Hazel, Wilson, Bell) have accounted for 257 of the team's 258 points and 750 of the team's 800 minutes.
• Princeton coach Mitch Henderson is presently ninth on the program's all-time wins list, but seventh place isn't far off. He's now at 59 wins, behind predecessor Sydney Johnson (66) and John Thompson III (68). Both are fellow Tiger alumni, Johnson (head coach from 2007-11) in the Class of 1997 and Thompson (head coach from 2000-04) in the Class of 1988.
• In 58 Ivy League seasons, Princeton has posted 52 winning Ivy seasons, four 7-7 finishes and just two losing records.
 |
• UTEP was picked second in Conference USA and had two players on the 10-man preseason all-conference team, including sophomore Vince Hunter, the C-USA Freshman of the Year in 2014, and senior Julian Washburn.
• Tim Floyd, in his fifth season with UTEP, is the team's fifth head coach since the program's 38-season head coach Don Haskins retired in 1999. Haskins guided the team to its first 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 1966 NCAA title, with the last of those NCAA bids coming in 1992. Since, UTEP has advanced to the dance three times, in 2004 under Billy Gillispie, who went on to coach at Texas A&M, Kentucky and Texas Tech, in 2005 under Doc Sadler, who went on to coach at Nebraska and now at Southern Mississippi in the hometown of current coach Tim Floyd, and in 2010 under Tony Barbee, who went on to coach at Auburn.
• UTEP won 25 games in Tim Floyd's first season of 2010-11, getting a bid in the NIT, and returned to the 20-win mark last season with a 23-11 campaign and a CBI berth.
• UTEP returns 72.5 percent of its points from last season, including four of its five most common starters: Julian Washburn (13.1 ppg), Vince Hunter (12.3 ppg), C.J. Cooper (9.6 ppg), and Matt Wilms (5.4 ppg).
• The Miners have experimented with the starting lineup in their two games so far this season, starting one set of five players for the season opener against Washington State and starting a completely different set of five for last Saturday night's game against New Mexico State. Nine of the 10 players played in each game, and no one outside of those 10 played in either of the first two games.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his third season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 59-35.
Under Henderson, Princeton is 31-9 at home, 28-14 in the Ivy League, and 18-3 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 46-11 when leading at the half under Henderson.
Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first three campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Luehring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04).
Henderson is in ninth place on the Princeton all-time wins list, with predecessor Sydney Johnson '97 in eighth with 66 wins over four seasons.
Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95.
Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, current San Diego Padre Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14.
Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield).
Prior to Princeton, Henderson coached at Northwestern for 11 seasons under his final head coach at Princeton, Bill Carmody, from 2000-11.
