PRINCETON, N.J. (11/29/14) - After two scoreless periods No. 2 Minnesota came out of the second intermission with a purpose and scored twice within 1:14 to take a 2-1 game over Princeton at Hobey Baker Rink on Saturday, Nov. 29.
The Tigers played right along with the Golden Gophers for 40 minutes, despite the shot differential, before Minnesota found the back of the net early in the third.
Minnesota (13-1-2) opened the third with a goal at 3:15 as it capitalized on a turnover in the slot. Brook Garzone intercepted the pass and as Hannah Brandt skated back into the zone she seized the opportunity to pick up the puck, deke a defender and beat Kimberly Newell glove side.
Less than two minutes later Minnesota expanded the lead on a goal by Maryanne Menefee on an odd play. Fiona McKenna's stick got tangled in Newell's pads. Newell stumbled and tried to recover but with the stick still lodged in her pads it made for an easy goal for Menefee. Kelly Pannek and Meghan Lorence traded the puck in the corner before putting it in the slot for Menefee.
"We played solid but not well enough to win," Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal said. "We made a couple bad mistakes that they capitalized on them. We made a couple mistakes that Kimberly saved us on, she played fantastic. We need her to be our best player every game and today she was that, so she gave us a chance to win. But I'm proud of the fact that we played hard until the very end."
Senior Brianna Leahy cut the deficit to just one at 15:18 on a power-play goal. Defender Kelsey Koelzer ripped a shot from the left point and it was redirected on the doorstep by Leahy. Junior Jaimie McDonell earned credit to the feed to Koelzer.
After Milica McMillen took an interference penalty at 16:32, Princeton (6-5-1) waited to gain possession and then pulled Newell for the two-player advantage. Amanda Leveille stood tall for the final 2:17 to earn the win for her team.
Newell made 42 saves, five shy of her career best as Minnesota outshot Princeton 44-16.
Princeton was 1 for 5 on the power play and 1 for 1 on the penalty kill.
Today's game was the first one-goal victory in series history, as Minnesota now holds a 7-1-1 edge in the series.
The teams will face off again tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m., in the second game of the two-game series.
